Early Life and Athletic Achievements
Born in Cookeville, Tennessee, to Steve and Suzette Taylor, Maria Taylor's early life was immersed in the world of sports. Her father was a coach at Tennessee Tech University at the time. Her family later moved to Roswell, Georgia, where she attended Centennial High School. Taylor excelled in basketball, earning numerous accolades throughout her four-year career. She was named to the Atlanta Tip-Off Team of the Year and was a three-time All-Region player. As a senior, she earned All-State honors, marking her as one of Georgia's best players. She was also recognized as a Fulton County Scholar Athlete of the Year and was the Offensive MVP of her high school volleyball team for three years.
Taylor's athletic prowess earned her an athletic scholarship to the University of Georgia, where she played both volleyball and basketball from 2005 to 2009. She focused primarily on volleyball, earning All-SEC team honors every season she played. She also contributed to her USA Volleyball team, helping them win a bronze medal. By the time she finished playing, she had become one of the top players in the University of Georgia's history.
Transition to Broadcasting
Taylor graduated from the University of Georgia in 2009 with a degree in broadcast news. Fueled by her passion for sports and her communication skills, she transitioned into the world of sports media. She returned to the University to pursue her Master of Business Administration, which she completed in May 2013.
Prior to 2012, Taylor gained experience as a reporter and host for IMG College at the University of Georgia for three years. She also appeared on various studio shows including Dawg Report, SEC Men’s Basketball Tonight, and SportsNite.

Rise Through ESPN and SEC Network
In 2013, Taylor's career gained momentum when she joined ESPN2 as a sideline reporter for college football games. She was the sideline reporter on ESPN2’s weekly Saturday-night primetime college football telecast in addition to the Orange Bowl, her second straight year covering the annual bowl game. A sideline reporter interviews players and coaches during the game.
In 2014, she joined the newly launched SEC Network, which focuses on sports from the Southeastern Conference. She was a college football reporter on SEC Network with commentator Brent Musburger and Jesse Palmer, and was also an analyst on other SEC telecasts including volleyball and women's basketball. Additionally, she provided sideline coverage for the 2016 Rose Bowl Game between Stanford University and the University of Iowa.
Taylor's role at ESPN continued to expand. By 2017, she had become a prominent figure on ESPN's popular show College GameDay as a reporter and host, replacing Samantha Ponder. She also covered the College Football Playoff, including the 2018 College Football Playoff National Championship. In 2019, she began hosting NBA Countdown, the pre-game show for ESPN's NBA games on Friday nights and Sunday afternoons. In 2020, she was the main host for the NBA Finals pre-game and halftime shows.
Move to NBC Sports
After her contract with ESPN ended in July 2021, Taylor joined NBC Sports just two days later. At NBC, Taylor became a panelist on Football Night in America, the pre-game show for Sunday Night Football. She has also hosted other major sports events for NBC, including the 2022 French Open tennis tournament and college football games.
In 2025, Taylor was named the lead studio host for NBC's coverage of the NBA and WNBA. She is expected to work Tuesday and Sunday night NBA games, while also hosting select WNBA games during the season.

Other activities
In 2015, Maria Co-Founded a non-profit organization called The Winning Edge Leadership Academy. The mission of the Winning Edge is to educate, foster professional mentoring relationships, provide networking opportunities and enrichment scholarships to ethnic minorities and women who are seeking careers in the sports industry. Since 2015, the academy has helped 16 students work towards job or internship placement and provided mentoring and funding for professional enrichment trips.
