In 1907, Marquette College gained university status after affiliating with a local medical school and relocating to its current campus. Johnston Hall, now home to the College of Communication, was the first building on the new grounds. Marquette University High School, previously the university's preparatory department, became a separate institution that same year.

The university continued to expand in the early 20th century, establishing an engineering college in 1908 and acquiring two law schools, which formed the basis of its present law program. In 1913, the acquisition of the Wisconsin College of Physicians and Surgeons led to the creation of the Marquette University School of Medicine. Rapid expansion occurred again in the 1920s and after World War II, with the addition of a new library, athletic facilities, classroom buildings, and residence halls. The St. Martin de Seysseul chapel, with connections to St. Joan of Arc, was transferred to the campus in the 1960s.

The university made a controversial decision in 1994 to discontinue the "Warriors" nickname for its sports teams, responding to pressure to eliminate Native American mascots. Despite backlash, the university community eventually adopted the "Golden Eagles" nickname. The Campus Circle Project, a $50 million investment in the surrounding neighborhood, and the Les Aspin Center for Government in Washington, D.C., were established in the 1990s.

The early 2000s saw further growth, with new residence halls, a library, a School of Dentistry building, and athletic facilities being added. The university received two of its largest donations during this period, including a $51 million gift from Raymond and Kathryn Eckstein for the School of Law.

Michael Lovell became president on July 1, 2014, succeeding Robert A. Wild's interim term. In 2022, the university updated its seal and motto to better reflect its history, Catholic, Jesuit mission, and the role of Indigenous nations.

History Program Diversity

Marquette University offers a vibrant student life with various organizations and activities. Among the stage performance groups are the Studio 013 Refugees, a student improv comedy group. The Marquette University Chorus, the longest-standing choral organization on campus, is a mixed choir. The university also has Men's Choir, Women's Choir, Chamber Choir, Gospel Choir, and a Liturgical Choir. Pure Dance is a lyrical and jazz performance group, and the Marquette University Symphony Orchestra provides members with the opportunity to develop and share musical talents. There are also several band ensembles that students may join, including the Symphonic Band and the Wind Ensemble, alongside two jazz bands.

The student newspaper, The Marquette Tribune, founded in 1916, is the official campus newspaper. A quarterly student-produced magazine, the Marquette Journal, focuses on student life. Marquette Radio and MUTV, the student radio and television stations, were launched in the late 1960s to mid-1970s.

Campus and Facilities

Marquette University's 93-acre campus is located in the University Hill neighborhood near downtown Milwaukee. The campus is approximately one mile west of Lake Michigan. The university also operates Valley Fields, an athletic facility with stadiums for track and field, lacrosse, and soccer teams.

The university has absorbed many existing buildings in the area for use as residence halls, including Charles Cobeen Hall, M. Carpenter Tower, Glenn Humphrey Hall, David Straz Tower, Mashuda Hall, and Abbottsford Hall. Of the nine current student residence halls, only three (O'Donnell Hall, Schroeder Hall, and McCormick Hall) were built by the university.

Athletics

Marquette University is a Division I member of the NCAA and competes in the Big East Conference. The university has 11 varsity teams: basketball, cross-country, men's golf, soccer, track & field, tennis, and women's volleyball. In 2013, Marquette began competition in varsity men's and women's lacrosse as a member of the Big East.

Marquette's intercollegiate athletic teams were the "Warriors" from May 1954 to July 1994, when the nickname was changed to the "Golden Eagles."
