Becoming a licensed Marriage and Family Therapist (MFT) requires a significant commitment to education, supervised clinical experience, and professional development. A crucial step in this journey is completing a marriage and family therapist internship. Educational Prerequisites: Building a Foundation
The bedrock of any successful MFT internship lies in fulfilling the necessary educational requirements. These requirements typically include earning a master's degree in marriage and family therapy or a closely related field.
Accreditation Matters: A minimum requirement is an earned master’s degree with major emphasis in marriage and family therapy, or a closely related field from a program accredited by the Commission on Accreditation for Marriage and Family Therapy Education (COAMFTE). Alternatively, a minimum of an earned master’s degree from a university program accredited by the Council for Accreditation of Counseling and Related Educational Programs (CACREP) and Board approved coursework may be acceptable.
Coursework:
- Six semester or nine quarter hours must be in marriage and family systems, theories, or techniques.
- Marital and Family Theoretical Foundations Includes the historical development of systems theory.
- Human issues are considered from the systems paradigm, including both theoretical literature and practical treatment issues.
- Marital and Family Therapy Diagnosis and Assessment, Treatment, Principles and Techniques Includes a comprehensive survey of the major models of system change and the principles and techniques evolving from each model.
- Diagnosis and treatment within the context of marital and family systems of both dysfunctional relationship patterns and nervous and mental disorders; cognitive, affective, and behavioral.
- Use of appropriate major mental health assessment instruments within a systemic context.
- Treatment processes for loss, intense stress, suicide, incest, violence, sexual dysfunctions, divorce and remarriage.
- Diagnosis training is mandatory.
- Professional Studies Development of a professional attitude and identity.
- Studies of professional socialization and the role of professional organizations; licensure; legal responsibilities and liabilities of clinical practice and research; family law; confidentiality issues, code of ethics, etc.
- Research Methods or Statistics Research methodology and data analysis, computer research skills, critical evaluation of professional research reports, with emphasis on research relevant to marital and family therapy.
Transcript Review: The transcript will be reviewed for the degree conferred date, accrediting body, required graduate level coursework (if applicable), and total number of semester hours. Foreign Education: It is the applicant’s responsibility to obtain an evaluation from a recognized foreign equivalency determination service that documents the acceptability of the coursework.
The Practicum Experience: A Glimpse into Real-World Application
A practicum is a crucial component of MFT training, providing students with supervised experience in a clinical setting.
- Hours Required: Completed a minimum of 400 hours supervised clinical practicum, internship, or field experience in a minimum of 12 months within a Marriage and Family Setting. The experience shall include at least 300 hours of direct client services of which a minimum of 200 hours must be relational.
- Verification: An official of the school (Dean, Department Chair) that awarded your graduate degree must provide a letter on university letterhead verifying the course title and total number of hours completed during the supervised practicum, internship, or field experience.
- Flexibility: If you do not meet the practicum requirement, the hours may be obtained as a registered intern and must be documented on the MFT Graduate Practicum Attestation Form by your Board approved Qualified Supervisor.
Registered Internship: Transitioning to Independent Practice
Following graduation, aspiring MFTs typically enter a period of registered internship, accumulating supervised clinical hours necessary for full licensure.
Supervisor Approval: Applicants must obtain a letter from a Board approved Qualified Supervisor and submit to the Board Office. Your registered intern number will not be issued until the Board Office has received your application, fee and the information listed above.

Verification: Verify that your intern registration number has been issued by the Department and that the Board Office has approved your Qualified Supervisor. To verify, click here.
Changing Supervisors:
- STEP ONE: Obtain a letter from your new or additional Qualified Supervisor and send to the Board Office.
- STEP TWO: Receive a letter from the Board Office stating that your supervisor has been approved and note the date of approval.

Clinical Experience Documentation: Your post-master’s clinical experience hours obtained under supervision must be documented on the Verification of Clinical Experience Form by the Qualified Supervisor or they will not count towards licensure. Application and Legal Considerations
The application process for MFT licensure involves careful attention to detail and adherence to legal and ethical standards.
- Application Review: Within 30 days of submitting your application and fee for licensure, you will receive a written review of your application and supporting documents from the Board Office staff. If your application is missing items, you will receive a deficiency letter. Your application will not be processed until we have received a complete application and fee. Upon submitting your application, you will be issued a file number to help track and reference your documents through the process.
- Deficiency Letter: Applicants will receive an application review in the form of a deficiency letter outlining the missing items required. They should submit these missing items as soon as possible. An incomplete application shall expire after 1 year.
- Approval Letter: Applicants will receive an application review in the form of a letter of approval including license number and additional information regarding their registered internship license.
- Linking Your Application: If you did not apply for licensure through this screen, please click on “Click HERE for New User Registration” and create an account. Once you are logged in, you will be prompted to link your application to your account in four easy steps. Once you have successfully linked your application, you will be directed to the Quick Start Menu.
- Examination: You do not need to apply for full licensure to take the exam. Passing exam scores will be forwarded to the board in 6 weeks or 45 Days. Score transfers must be requested from the exam vendor.
- Application Processing Time: Florida law provides that an initial application must be reviewed within 30 days.
- Electronic Fingerprinting: Florida passed House Bill 975 following the 2024 legislative session, which requires this profession to complete electronic fingerprinting. Your application cannot be approved until this requirement, along with all other licensure criteria, has been met.
- Intern Registration: An intern registration cannot be renewed.
- Health Conditions: A letter from a licensed health care practitioner, who is qualified by skill and training to address the condition identified, which explains the impact the condition may have on the ability to practice the profession with reasonable skill and safety. The letter must specify that the applicant is safe to practice the profession without restrictions or specifically indicate the restrictions that are necessary.
- Disciplinary Actions: Board Actions - Certified copies of document(s) relative to any disciplinary action taken against any license. Self-Explanation - A detailed description of the circumstances surrounding your disciplinary action and a thorough description of the rehabilitative changes in your lifestyle since the time of the disciplinary action which would enable you to avoid future occurrences.
- Legal Offenses: Final Dispositions/Arrest Records - Final disposition records for offenses can be obtained at the clerk of the court in the arresting jurisdiction. Completion of Probation/Parole/Sanctions - Probation and financial sanction records for offenses can be obtained at the clerk of the court in the arresting jurisdiction. Parole records for offenses can be obtained from the Department of Corrections or at the clerk of the court in the arresting jurisdiction. Self Explanation - Applicants who have listed offenses on the application must submit a letter in their own words describing the circumstances of the offense.
- Felony Convictions: Has been convicted of, or entered a plea of guilty or nolo contendere to, regardless of adjudication, a felony under Chapter 409, F.S., (relating to social and economic assistance), Chapter 817, F.S., (relating to fraudulent practices), Chapter 893, F.S., (relating to drug abuse prevention and control) or a similar felony offense(s) in another state or jurisdiction unless the candidate or applicant has successfully completed a drug court program for that felony and provides proof that the plea has been withdrawn or the charges have been dismissed. ss.
- Exclusion List: Is currently listed on the United States Department of Health and Human Services Office of Inspector General’s List of Excluded Individuals and Entities.

- Course Enrollment: Be enrolled in a 1 credit course, MFTH 4900: MFT Clinical Undergraduate Internship.
- Consultation Teams: The consultation teams, where the intern can observe live therapy cases, meet one day a week from 12-7 for the entire summer semester. Interns can choose how often and for what duration they would like to attend. The summer semester only occurs face to face and is offered as a zero credit, as this only includes attending the consultation team.
