Navigating Course Materials at Maryville College: Understanding the Bookstore and Slingshot Program

Maryville College has partnered with Slingshot to provide students with course materials. This article will explore how this partnership works, the options available to students, and other resources for obtaining textbooks and supplies.

Slingshot Partnership: Ensuring Access to Course Materials

Maryville College has partnered with Slingshot in an effort to give students access to necessary course materials, including textbooks and lab kits, before classes begin. Kelly Leonard, vice president for finance, stated that Slingshot was chosen due to its commitment to student success, reflected in their slogan: “every single student, every single course material, by the first day of class, at an affordable price." Slingshot services small colleges and universities all over the country, including Lipscomb University and Trevecca Nazarene University, both in Tennessee.

How Slingshot Works

All Maryville College students are automatically enrolled in Slingshot's program. After enrolling in classes, faculty-selected course materials can be provided to students without any additional action on their part. Students will automatically receive physical rentals, but Slingshot’s Choice Program allows students to change the rental default through a student portal.

Slingshot Choice Program: Customizing Your Course Material Experience

The Slingshot Choice Program provides options for students to customize how they receive their course materials. Through the student portal, students can:

  • Buy a new book
  • Buy digital access
  • Opt out of the program entirely.

Cost-effective, used rental items will be provided whenever possible, but students can customize their experience anytime, anywhere.

Delivery Options

Slingshot offers multiple delivery options to cater to different student needs:

  • On-Campus Residents: Materials will be delivered to their residence hall rooms before move-in.
  • Commuter Students: Materials can be shipped to their home for an extra cost or picked up at the Maryville College campus store inside Bartlett Hall for no additional cost.

Shipping preferences can be changed through the student portal.

Billing and Payment

Billing for course materials will begin around Aug. 7, with a deadline to pay or make arrangements for payment by mid-September, according to Melanie Croft, Maryville College bursar.

Returns and Refunds

Students have up to seven days after the start of classes to return unwanted course materials and receive a full refund.

Notifications

Slingshot Logistics will send notifications of delivery of packages to faculty and staff.

The MC Campus Store (The Bookstore)

The MC Campus Store, traditionally known as “The Bookstore,” is located on the ground level of Bartlett Hall. The MC Campus Store will not carry books for purchase during the semester.

Textbook Returns

Students will be required to return rented textbooks within 7 days of the end of classes. Students that do not return books within the timeline will have additional charges applied to their student account. Students withdrawing in the middle of the semester will be required to return rented material within 7 days of withdrawal.

Purchasing Textbooks

Purchasing individual textbooks through Slingshot is an option for students who opt out of the program, but delivery may not happen in time for the first day of class. While most students rent textbooks to save money, some students choose to purchase and there are some textbooks that cannot be rented (custom titles, bundled with access codes or old editions).
