The Significance of Scholarships

Their impact extends beyond individual students, influencing families and communities by opening doors to opportunities that might otherwise be unattainable. This breaks down barriers to education and promotes socioeconomic advancement. In today's rapidly changing world, where innovation and creativity are essential for progress, investing in education is crucial. Scholarships at Massachusetts Maritime Academy cultivate a diverse and dynamic community where individuals from various backgrounds collaborate, learn, and thrive, enabling students to pursue their passions, explore new horizons, and become leaders in their respective fields.
Understanding Financial Aid at Mass Maritime
Massachusetts Maritime Academy's tuition stands at $11,801 for in-state students and $24,471 for out-of-state students, making it more affordable than the national average for both categories. However, the cost of attendance can fluctuate annually. It's essential to consider the total cost, which includes tuition, fees, food, housing, books, supplies, transportation, and personal expenses, as well as the net price after financial aid.

The average need-based self-help aid, including federal loans and work-study, was $3,957. Merit-based aid, recognizing talent or academic achievement, averaged $7,704 for first-year students, excluding athletic scholarships. Mass Maritime met 88% of its students’ financial aid need.
Massachusetts residents should explore state grants like the need-based tuition waiver program, MASSGrant, the Massachusetts Gilbert Matching Student Grant Program, and MCAS Scholarships. The academy also participates in the Tuition Break program, offering discounted tuition to residents of Connecticut, Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Rhode Island, and Vermont. Scholarship Opportunities at Massachusetts Maritime Academy
The Academy’s Scholarship Committee or the Office of Admissions will use the information that you have provided on the application to make decisions on scholarship recipients. Scholarship decisions are made based on admission credentials at the time the student is admitted. Updated transcripts sent to the Office of Admissions after an acceptance has been made will not be taken into consideration for merit aid.
General Scholarship Application
By submitting one application, students are considered for multiple scholarships. To apply, students must sign in with their Self Service username and password and complete a general application.
Named Scholarship Funds
Donors can establish named scholarship funds with a minimum initial contribution of $5,000. These funds allow donors to specify criteria such as area of study, class year, or GPA for eligible recipients. Awards are distributed until the funds are exhausted. Donors are welcome to continue their scholarship with annual gifts to their fund.
Named Endowed Scholarships
A named endowed scholarship requires a minimum of $50,000 as either a one-time gift or as a pledge to be paid over five years. With this commitment, donors may choose to provide specific criteria and preferences to the Academy’s Scholarship Committee regarding which cadets are eligible to receive the funds. These criteria may include (among others) areas of study, class year, or GPA. With an endowment, the Foundation invests the initial gift which generates an annual spend rate that is distributed according to the fund agreement. The corpus of the scholarship fund will not be invaded and all awards will come from the earnings according to the MMA Foundation’s distribution policy.

Sea Term
Sea Term is an important aspect of MMA’s “Learn-Do-Learn” philosophy. Due to space constraints on the TS Kennedy, most spaces are saved for our licensed track students (non-license students participate in experiential learning opportunities during their time at MMA which may take them to places across the world as exotic as those on a typical sea term). Sea Term is January through February, between the two academic semesters. Cadets return to campus soon after the New Year holiday, and prepare the ship to sail, including loading provisions in the freezers and dry stores spaces. In the past ten years the cadets have visited Barbados, Curacao, Aruba, Spain, Italy, Tenerife, Mexico, Panama, Costa Rica, England, Madeira, Greece, Cayman Islands, Martinique and Tortola, not to mention US ports like Miami, Fort Lauderdale, New Orleans and Charleston. The voyage lasts 52 days on average, and during that time a cadet will rotate through class and laboratory training at sea, ships operations (including deck and engine watches), maintenance, and emergency drills.
