The Master’s in Higher Education Administration is often a 2-year, full-time program requiring a minimum number of credit hours. For instance, Vanderbilt University's program requires 36 credit hours of coursework.

Elective Courses

At Vanderbilt University, twelve hours of elective courses may be taken across Peabody College, as well as in other disciplines offered across Vanderbilt University upon consultation with your faculty advisor.

Experiential Learning: Internships and Practicums

Practical experience is a cornerstone of many Higher Education Administration programs.

Supervised practice experiences within our Higher Education program take several forms: (1) graduate assistantships, (2) required internship, and (3) independent studies.

Graduate assistantships are paid opportunities for part-time employment (15-20 hours per week) and are generally contracted for a minimum of an academic year.
The required internship is a short term experience that takes place during the fall of the second year and is accompanied with an in-class academic component (3 credit hours) and may or may not be paid.
Students are encouraged to complete an additional internship experience for academic credit as an independent study.

Students in the Higher Education Administration (M.Ed.) program are not required to hold a graduate assistantship; however, most of our full-time students are interested and able to secure assistantships to help fund their graduate education while gaining valuable practical skills. There is not a separate application for obtaining a graduate assistantship; the Higher Education program assists in the matching process for students in the Master’s program. Each year, we host an annual spring Recruitment Weekend where students are able to interview for various assistantship and employment opportunities that will be available during the following academic year. Assistantship/Employment contracts, tuition remission, and stipend amounts vary based upon the position and institution. In addition to assistantships at NC State, our program has longstanding partnerships with both Duke University and University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, and in the past, we have had assistantships at North Carolina Central University and Meredith College.

Program Duration and Flexibility

At 36 credit hours, typically the Master of Education (M.Ed.) in Higher Education Administration degree takes 2-3 years to complete, depending on enrollment status. Programs like the one at Georgia Southern offer the flexibility of fully online courses that fit within your busy schedule. Full-time students at Northwestern University can complete the degree in four (4) quarters / (12) twelve months, while part-time students can complete the degree in as little as (6) quarters / (18) eighteen months.

Admissions Requirements

The M.Ed. in Higher Education Administration program is open to applications from those holding a bachelor’s degree from a regionally accredited institution with a cumulative GPA of at least 2.5 (on a 4.0 scale).

Typical application requirements include:

An online application.
All “Disclosure and Affirmation” statements, which address the Code of Ethics for Educators and the need for tort liability insurance.
A final transcript showing completion of a bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university, in addition to transcripts for all prior graduate-level work.
Personal statement of interest and desired career goals.
The GRE is not required.
