Unveiling the MathWorks Engineering Development Group (EDG) Internship Program

The Engineering Development Group (EDG) internship program at MathWorks offers a distinctive opportunity for aspiring engineers to immerse themselves in the world of MathWorks, cultivate valuable professional relationships, and relish every moment of the experience. This program seamlessly integrates the development of programming skills, the enhancement of technical communication abilities, and the presentation of ideas within a corporate setting, alongside outdoor activities, recreational events, and fun outings, creating a truly remarkable experience.

A Day in the Life of a MathWorks EDG Intern

Imagine arriving at the Lakeside Campus in Natick and heading straight to the cafeteria for a free, sumptuous breakfast. After a healthy start to the day, you make your way to your office and settle in. Interns are assigned to projects within various teams at MathWorks, and these projects vary greatly in the technologies, programming languages, and tools employed. After figuring that out, a quick trip to the coffee machine for a hot chocolate might be in order.

During the scrum meetings, it’s always interesting to hear about the cool projects that the team is working on and try to relate how your work would fit into the team’s overall workflows. These meetings also serve as great avenues for asking questions and getting help or feedback about your own projects. After the meeting, you spend a few minutes clearly articulating and documenting the tasks for the rest of day, and then jump right into the work.

You might find yourself thinking about complex optimizations that will be applied to MATLAB code before converting it into HDL. This could involve searching the massive codebase and tweaking it. After running some tests, you fix the ones that failed. Then, you eagerly wait for one of your friends to knock on your office door and head out to lunch.

Just like breakfast, lunch is also free and offers a huge variety of choices with specials each day. The cafeteria is buzzing with MathWorks staff having lunch and discussing a plethora of different topics. On Thursdays, a special barbecue is organized in one of the outdoor areas on campus. After lunch, it’s playtime (not officially)! You might head back to the office after a refreshing game of Ping-Pong.

Now is the time to write the most code and make the most progress on your project. Around this time, you might make your way to the coffee machine for the last time during the day. You conclude the day by documenting all the tasks completed on that day and reflecting on the progress made so far. After shutting down your laptop and waving your friends goodbye, you might head to the gym.

A typical day would be full of learning, coding, coffee, and giggles. The program is so carefully crafted, which reflects one of MathWorks distinctive qualities, a great work-life balance.
