NFL Draft and Green Bay Packers
Draft Day Excitement
The Green Bay Packers selected Matthew Golden in the first round of the 2025 NFL Draft with the 23rd overall pick. This marked the first time since 2002 that the Packers had used their first-round pick on a receiver. The selection of Golden was met with enthusiasm from Packers fans, who had been waiting for a first-round receiver for over two decades.
"It's a blessing," Golden said onstage. Of his ability to make big plays in big moments, as was the case in the College Football Playoffs, he said. "That's what you should expect from me. I'm a reliable target. I can get open anywhere on the field. I'm bringing that dawg mentality, know that."
Rookie Season and Contract
The Packers signed Golden to a rookie contract, solidifying his place on the team. During his first game on varsity in high school, he caught four touchdown passes. In the process, he became tight with his coach’s young son. “Win or lose, whether he had the type of game he wanted to have or not, he always made time to stop and give my son hug and do all that,” James Clancy said of Golden. “That was one of the things I told him. No matter what level you play at, don’t ever lose that wholesomeness.
Player Profile and Strengths

College Football Season
The college football season begins on Sept. 2 for 12 of the 13 FBS teams in the state of Texas. As we approach the start of another season, we'll count down the 50-most important players in college football. We'll go one-by-one until Sept. No. A four-star recruit in the Class of 2022 from Klein Cain High School, Golden made an immediate impact for Houston as a freshman. He finished second on the team with 38 receptions for 584 yards and set a program freshman record with seven touchdown catches. Now that Dell is off to the NFL, Golden is expected to take over the top wide receiver role. Listed at 6-feet tall and 190 pounds, Golden is bigger than Dell and has the ability to line up in the slot and take the top off the defense. He'll need to be steady for new starter Donovan Smith as the Texas Tech transfer acclimates to the new offense in game speed. The preseason expectations are ramping up for Golden, who was put on the Maxwell Award preseason watchlist for the best college football player. Much of his production will depend on Smith's play, as all Houston receivers last year benefitted from Clayton Tune, who threw for over 4,000 yards and 40 touchdowns. Even though Golden is the clear-cut No.1 option, he won't have to put up the gaudy stats Dell did for Houston to be successful.
