Navigating MBTA Student Discounts: A Comprehensive Guide to Eligibility and Savings
The Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority (MBTA) offers various discount programs to make public transportation more affordable for students in the Greater Boston area. This article provides a detailed overview of MBTA student discount eligibility, pass options, and how to take advantage of these programs to save money on your commute.
Understanding the MBTA Student Pass Programs
The MBTA offers several programs designed to provide discounted fares to students. These programs include the Semester Pass Program and the Student Pass Program, each with its own eligibility requirements and benefits.
Semester Pass Program
Designed primarily for commuting college students, the Semester Pass Program provides an 11% discount off the regular monthly "T" pass price. Some schools offer additional aid, potentially resulting in even greater discounts. This program allows students to purchase passes for a fixed period, typically a semester (four or five months).
Pass Options:
- Semester LinkPass: Unlimited travel on subway and local bus.
- Semester Commuter Rail Pass: Unlimited travel on the Commuter Rail (up to the zone distance purchased), plus unlimited subway and local bus trips.
- Bus-only passes and ferry passes: Also available.
Pass Pricing and Duration:
The pricing and length of passes depend on the mode of transit and the length of the semester:
- September - December (4-month pass)
- October - January (4-month pass)
- January - April (4-month pass)
- January - May (5-month pass)
- February - May (4-month pass)
Eligibility and How to Purchase:
- Full-time Boston-based Health Science School students (Medical, Dental, Nutrition Schools and Public Health Professional Degree, and certain GSBS* degree programs) are eligible to purchase an MBTA pass at a 40% discount over regular “T” prices (up to $55/mo. on monthly passes). Grafton-based Veterinary School students are eligible to purchase an MBTA Semester Pass at an 11% discount. *GSBS students that qualify include CTS (MS, PHD & Cert) and PDD-MS.
- Tufts University, in partnership with Edenred Commuter Benefit Solutions, has implemented an online storefront for the purchase of MBTA Passes. All discounted MBTA passes must be purchased through your SIS Portal. Along with hosting the site, Edenred will be offering customer service for all technical questions that may arise.
- Harvard Griffin GSAS students can order a five-month (January through May) or four-month (February through May) pass for the spring term and a four-month (September through December) pass for the fall term. Orders for spring 2026 five-month (January-May) passes must be placed between November 9 and December 8 at the Edenred order link. Orders for spring 2026 four-month (February-May) passes can be placed between December 9 and January 8.
- Before all purchases are made you will have the ability to update your delivery address for the pass.
Important Considerations:
- Payment is not processed immediately upon order submission. It's crucial to ensure your payment information is accurate and that sufficient funds are available until the purchase period ends.
- The Health Sciences Bursar's Office cannot make exceptions to purchase deadlines and is not responsible for lost, stolen, or defective passes.
- Cards expire at the end of the chosen semester period, and new passes need to be renewed before your school’s set deadline.
- Commuter Rail and ferry passes cannot be replaced if lost or stolen.
- Students are charged for the entire amount and cannot opt in or out of coverage during the term.

This program is designed for middle and high school students enrolled in participating schools. Eligible students receive either an M7 Card or an S-Card, depending on their school's participation.

Harvard Griffin GSAS Specifics
Harvard Griffin GSAS offers specific benefits to its students:
- Harvard Griffin PhD students whose Notice of Financial Support includes a transportation stipend will receive a lump sum of $818 on September 1 as part of their funding packages.
- Eligible students may direct the transportation stipend toward their preferred commuting method, including toward purchasing an MBTA semester pass at an 11 percent discount off the full price.
- Harvard Griffin GSAS master's students and non-funded PhD students who purchase MBTA semester passes will continue to be reimbursed 50 percent of the cost as a term bill credit, up to $409.00 per term.
- Harvard Griffin GSAS allows one MBTA semester pass order per student per term, and you must be currently enrolled at the Harvard Kenneth C. Griffin Graduate School of Arts and Sciences to qualify for a pass.
MBTA Pilot Program
The MBTA is also running a two-year pilot program to collect and evaluate data on how college and university students use MBTA passes. With usage-based pricing, schools can pay for students at a lower rate. The MBTA is individually contacting colleges and universities for participation in the pilot program.
CharlieCards and Payment Options
The MBTA utilizes CharlieCards and CharlieTickets for fare payment. While CharlieCards are still used for Semester Passes and Monthly Passes, they are no longer necessary for paying individual fares on the bus or T, thanks to the MBTA’s new Tap to Ride system.

CharlieCards
These rechargeable cards can hold value or monthly passes. They are essential for the Semester Pass Program and can be used for individual fares.
CharlieTickets
These paper tickets can hold value but do not offer the same benefits as CharlieCards.
Contactless Payment
The MBTA is in the process of creating a new CharlieCard with more advanced features and account management options. Until that system is launched, your best bet for paying individual bus and T fare is to simply use contactless payment with a credit card, smart phone, or smart watch.
Adding Value to Your CharlieCard
You can add cash value to your CharlieCard at fare vending machines, retail sales locations, and the Charlie Service Center. Fares paid with cash value will not be discounted.
Transfers## Subway and Bus:For Local Bus, Express Bus, Silver Line, and/or Subway, transfer up to two times and pay only the cost of the highest-priced service.
Commuter Rail and Ferry:Certain monthly Commuter Rail passes printed on a CharlieTicket include unlimited transfers to any mode. Single-ride Commuter Rail and ferry tickets generally do not include free transfers.
Note: Transfers are not available with store value CharlieTickets or cash payments.

Key Considerations and Tips for Students
- Eligibility Verification: Confirm your eligibility for specific discount programs through your school or the MBTA.
- Timely Application: Adhere to application deadlines to avoid missing out on potential savings. For example, no applications, cancellations, or refunds can be processed once the January 10th deadline has passed.
- Payment Accuracy: Ensure your payment information is correct to avoid rejection and ineligibility for the pass.
- Lost or Stolen Passes: Be aware of the replacement policies for different types of passes. Commuter Rail and ferry passes cannot be replaced.
- CharlieCard Management: Understand how to add value to your CharlieCard and where to do it. You cannot add value or passes to your Student CharlieCard online.
- Cost-Benefit Analysis: Evaluate whether a semester pass or a pay-per-ride option is more economical based on your travel frequency.
- Check for University-Specific Programs: Inquire about additional discounts or subsidies offered by your college or university.
- M7 Cards and S-Cards: Students can show their M7 card for free rides on the East Boston Ferry.
