Navigating the MBU Student Portal: A Comprehensive Guide

For students and guests at Missouri Baptist University (MBU), the "MBU Open" network provides essential connectivity. Beyond basic internet access, the university offers a range of online services and resources accessible through the student portal. This guide aims to provide a comprehensive overview of the MBU student portal, covering network access, payment options, financial aid information, and other important aspects of student life.

Network Access and Connectivity

Each residential sleeping room is equipped with a wired network wall jack. For devices that require a stable and high-speed connection, such as gaming consoles, a wired connection to the campus network is strongly recommended.

Expanding Network Ports

If you require more than one network port in your room, Resident Life offers switches and patch cables for checkout. These must be returned before or at move-out time.

Technical Support

If you encounter any issues with your PC or Mac, MBU provides basic troubleshooting assistance and advice for more complex problems.

Computer Clusters

For students who need access to computers on campus, MBU offers several computer clusters:

  • Dining Hall Cluster: Located near the main entrance of the dining hall, this cluster provides three PCs for student use.
  • Administration Building Cluster: In the Administration Building hallway, you'll find two PCs and a printer available for student use.

Student Financial Services

Payment Options

All student accounts are due and payable by the first day of each semester. It is the student's responsibility to ensure the accuracy and timeliness of all applications. If payment arrangements are necessary, students should contact the Student Financial Services Office to finalize their official registration.

MBU offers various payment methods:

  • Credit or Debit Card: Payments made via credit or debit card will incur a 2.85% non-refundable service fee, which will appear as a separate transaction.
  • E-Check/ACH: There is no service fee for paying via e-check/ACH.
  • Personal Check: Payments can be made in person with a personal check.
  • Money Order: Money orders are accepted as a form of payment.
  • Cash: Cash payments are also accepted.

Third-Party Billing and Employer Reimbursement

Third-party payments are defined as payments received from an outside agency billed through MBU's third-party sponsored billing system. This billing method allows entities such as companies, corporations, or government agencies to establish direct invoicing and payment on behalf of the student. Students must submit a third-party payment form to the Student Accounts Office each semester to utilize this option.

Payment Plans

Missouri Baptist University has partnered with NELNET Campus Commerce to offer students a convenient way to budget expenses and set up automatic semester payment plans for the fall and spring semesters.

Authorized Parties

Students can add an authorized party to their account to submit payments or set up a payment plan. To do so, log in to MyMBU Access and click “My Payments/Refunds”. Once logged in to Nelnet, click on “Add an Authorized Party”.

Payment Date Deferrals

Students can request to change their payment date within Nelnet. Begin by clicking View Details on the Nelnet home page. Next, select Change Payment Date by the due date to be adjusted. MBU allows a maximum of two payment date deferrals.

The payment date displayed is the date MBU will request the funds to be withdrawn from your bank account. Payment information must be submitted to the Federal Reserve one business day before the payment date to ensure timely withdrawal. Depending on your bank's policies, the payment may appear as pending before the actual payment date, potentially impacting your available balance.

Paperless Billing

MBU encourages students to opt for paperless billing to save time and contribute to environmental sustainability.

Form 1098-T: Tuition Statement

What is Form 1098-T?

The Form 1098-T is a statement that colleges and universities are required to issue to certain students for tax purposes. MBU is unable to provide tax advice regarding the use of this form.

Why Amounts May Differ

The amounts on Form 1098-T may not equal the total payments made to the university. MBU is required to report payment amounts that applied only to qualified tuition and related expenses. This may exclude payments for non-qualified expenses such as dorm and meal plans, insurance, health service fees, parking tags, and books. The form reports amounts paid in a calendar year, which may not align with the dates classes were attended. For example, Spring semester tuition paid in November of the previous year will be reflected in that year's Form 1098-T.

Taxable Scholarships

Non-qualified taxable scholarships, such as amounts received for incidental expenses or by non-degree candidates, are reported on Form 1042-S. In some cases, students may receive a W-2 in addition to a 1042-S.

Why MBU Requests SSN/ITIN

MBU is required by the IRS to request your Social Security Number (SSN) or Individual Tax Identification Number (ITIN). This information is used for identification purposes and to verify the accuracy of tax returns. Providing your correct SSN is required by Section 6109 of the Internal Revenue Code. All students are expected to complete this form at the time of initial registration and after any break in enrollment.

Withdrawal Policy

When a student enrolls for a term, the University incurs expenses to make provisions accordingly. Therefore, a student’s withdrawal does not materially reduce the costs to the University.
