Understanding MCC Tuition and Fees: A Comprehensive Guide

Navigating the world of college tuition and fees can be daunting. This article provides a comprehensive overview of tuition and fees at McHenry County College (MCC), covering residency requirements, payment options, refund policies, and other essential information to help students and their families plan for the cost of education.

Residency and Tuition Rates

The tuition rate you pay at MCC is primarily determined by your residency status. To qualify for the in-district tuition rate, you must be a resident of District 528 for at least 30 days immediately before the start date of the semester. If you reside outside the college district but are employed at least 35 hours per week within the district, you may be eligible for the in-district rate.

Mandatory Fees

In addition to tuition, students are typically required to pay mandatory fees. These "Mandatory fees" include General Services Fee, Facilities Fee, and Lab Fees.

Payment Options

MCC offers several convenient payment options to help students manage their tuition and fees:

  • Online Payment: You can make a partial or full payment online by selecting "Student Finance" and then "Make a Payment."
  • Nelnet Payment Plan: Enroll in the Nelnet payment plan online after registering for classes. This plan divides your tuition balance into monthly installments.
  • Past-Due Payment Plan: If you have difficulty paying the entire amount due from prior terms at once, MCC offers a Past-Due Payment Plan. This plan allows you to pay your balance over a few months instead of in one lump sum. This plan also provides a way for you to pay any balance you may owe after your aid award has been disbursed over 3 months.
  • In Person: You can pay in person through the MCC Registration and Records Office.
  • Over the Phone: Pay over the phone through the MCC Registration and Records Office at (815) 455-8588.

For your convenience, you can enroll in the Nelnet payment plan online once you've registered for classes.

Financial Aid and Deferred Payment Plans

Many students rely on financial aid to help cover the cost of tuition and fees. If you are waiting for financial aid approval, you can still register for classes. The Deferred Payment Plan and any fees will only go into effect if a balance is due after your aid award is disbursed. If your award pays all tuition and fees, the payment plan will not be activated. If your award doesn't pay all tuition and fees, the deferred payment plan will be activated to collect the remaining balance due.

Employer Tuition Assistance

If you plan to use employer tuition assistance, it is your responsibility to be aware of MCC's withdrawal and refund policies. MCC will not provide tuition or any financial information to anyone other than the student without a Release of Confidentiality form on file.

Tuition Refunds

Tuition refunds apply only to that portion of a student's semester hour enrollment for which tuition has been charged and payment received.

See our procedure on Tuition & Fees: College Credit Courses (FD-I-a) for refund periods of courses of all lengths, or call the Business Office at 254-299-8627. "Mandatory fees" include General Services Fee, Facilities Fee, and Lab Fees.

Non-Resident Tuition Credit

Eligible non-resident students may qualify for a tuition credit. To receive this credit, you (student or taxpayer) must complete the Non-Resident Tuition Credit Request (PDF) form and submit the required tax documents to a campus business office. Acceptable documents include:

College in the High School Course Fee

Terms and Conditions

All students must agree to the Terms and Conditions each semester prior to registering for classes. This agreement will automatically appear in MyMCC before you select your classes.

Key Considerations

  • Residency: Understand the residency requirements to ensure you are paying the correct tuition rate.
  • Payment Deadlines: Be aware of payment deadlines to avoid late fees or enrollment cancellation.
  • Financial Aid: Apply for financial aid early to maximize your options.
  • Refund Policies: Familiarize yourself with the withdrawal and refund policies.
  • Payment Plans: Utilize payment plans to break down tuition costs into manageable installments.
