The seeds of McMurry University were sown in 1920 when the Northwest Texas Conference of the Methodist Church voted to establish a college. Methodist minister James Winfred Hunt played a crucial role in bringing this vision to life. Working in collaboration with the city of Abilene, Hunt secured the necessary land, and the charter of McMurry College was ratified on November 21, 1921. The institution officially opened its doors on September 20, 1923, as McMurry College, marking the beginning of its journey as a center for higher education. In October 1989, McMurry College was renamed McMurry University.

McMurry University offers a vibrant campus life with a wide array of student organizations, clubs, and activities. Seventy-five percent of students are involved in at least one extracurricular activity. Student Organizations

McMurry boasts a diverse range of student organizations catering to various interests and passions. With 20 open-membership student organizations, including sororities and fraternities, students have ample opportunities to connect with like-minded individuals. Sixteen percent of male students are members of social organizations, while that percentage is 15 for female students.

The Student Association is the most inclusive of the McMurry student organizations. Composed of all full-time students of the University, this organization exists primarily to promote the democratic expression and exercise of student opinion, and to represent, serve, and assist students in matters relating to student social life, activities, and elections. The leadership of the Student Association is the McMurry Student Government which is divided into executive, judicial, and legislative branches, the last of which is composed of the Senate.

The McMurry Student Foundation (MSF): Formerly known as the Student Ambassador Board, MSF acts as a liaison between McMurry students, alumni, and special guests. The Servant Leadership Center of the Southwest: This center strives to help students become effective servants and leaders. Through curricular and extracurricular efforts, the Servant Leadership Center affirms that the most effective leaders are, first, motivated to serve.
Campus Activities Board (CAB): CAB is a student run organization which Campus Life serves the McMurry Student Body through planning and sponsoring a variety of programs on campus. The McMurry Marching Band: Consisting of students from all areas of study, including music majors and non-majors, the McMurry Marching Band presents half-time shows at football games and parades during the Fall semester. In the Spring semester, it transforms into the Symphonic Band, performing in concert at schools, churches, and community events.
The Wind Ensemble: Renowned for its remarkable presence and dynamic range, the Wind Ensemble has traveled the globe to attend conferences and present unique music.

The Percussion Ensemble: An active chamber ensemble open to all students with permission of instructor, the Percussion Ensemble presents two to four concerts each year and may include some travel.
The McMurry University Trumpet Ensemble: Required for all Trumpet majors and open to others with permission of the instructor, the ensemble performs the standard repertoire and also regularly premieres newly commissioned works.

Alpha Chi: Organized in 1926, the James Winford Hunt chapter of Alpha Chi is a national scholarship society. Eligibility is based upon character and scholarship, and members are elected from the top ten percent of the junior and senior classes.
Beta Beta Beta: The Pi Beta Chapter of Beta Beta Beta was installed in 1979.
Kappa Delta Pi: On May 18, 1951, the Eta Epsilon chapter of the national honor society in education, Kappa Delta Pi, was chartered at McMurry University.
Pi Mu Epsilon: In the spring of 1987 the Texas Iota chapter of this honorary mathematics fraternity was formed on the McMurry campus.
Phi Alpha Theta: Chartered in 1971, Phi Alpha Theta is an international honor society for history.
Pi Kappa Delta: The Texas Gamma chapter of Pi Kappa Delta, a national forensics fraternity, was organized in 1967.
Psi Chi: The McMurry University chapter of Psi Chi was chartered in April 1999. Psi Chi is the National Honor Society in Psychology.
Sigma Pi Sigma: The Lambda Epsilon Chapter at McMurry University was chartered in April, 1975. The McMurry Chapter of Sigma Pi Sigma, physics honor society, was chartered in 1962.
Sigma Tau Delta: In 1951 the Phi Epsilon chapter of the national honorary and professional society of Sigma Tau Delta was chartered on the campus of McMurry University.

Athletics: The War Hawks

McMurry University participates in 20 intercollegiate sports. McMurry's school colors are maroon and white. McMurry fields teams in 20 different intercollegiate sports.

The McMurry Athletic Department is committed to the enhancement of the educational experiences of its scholar-athletes within the established Christian Liberal Arts tradition of the university. Through the provision of equitable opportunities for growth and excellence through intercollegiate athletics competition and the intentional integration of athletics and academic experiences, the Athletics Department is dedicated to the academic success and progress toward graduation of its scholar-athletes, as well as the development of skills necessary for lifelong social responsibility and service.

McMurry announced October 19, 2016, that the sport of softball would be added to its women's intercollegiate programs, beginning in 2018.

A Change of Mascot

McMurry's sports teams originally used Indians as their mascot. In late August 2005, the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) handed down a decision calling for the eighteen universities with Native American mascots to change their names or obtain a waiver from their representative tribe for the use of the mascot name. The McMurry Indians were part of this list. On May 18, 2006, the NCAA rejected McMurry's appeal to keep their nickname. In October 2006, McMurry's board of trustees decided that the university would no longer use any names for its athletic teams. On March 11, 2011, it was announced that McMurry University's athletic teams would be known as the War Hawks.

Campus Facilities and Resources

McMurry University provides a range of facilities and resources to support student learning, well-being, and engagement.

Garrison Campus Center: Completed in the fall of 1979, the Campus Center is a structure located in the center of McMurry’s campus. The Campus Center is a partially underground structure with grassy slopes rising around its walls. This structure is used for a wide variety of activities. In the spring of 2024, the $25 million-plus expansion of the Garrison Campus Center was completed.
Walt Driggers Field: Walt Driggers Field is the home of the McMurry War Hawks collegiate baseball program. The field was designed and built by Anglea Sports Fields. McMurry played its first game at Walt Driggers Field on February 12, 1997, with a 7-3 win against Wayland Baptist Pioneers.
Counseling Services: Counseling Services is devoted to helping students who need assistance in coping with personal problems.
Career Development: McMurry University office of Career Development provides a variety of career opportunities that can assist students and alumni in making wise career decisions.
Health Clinic: is staffed by a registered nurse and a nurse practitioner. There is no charge for services provided in the clinic.

Admission and Financial Aid

McMurry University has an acceptance rate of 57%. For freshmen, the application deadline for this school is August 15. McMurry University has an official test-optional admission policy but takes into consideration standardized test scores if the applicant chooses to submit them. In the freshman class, 98 percent of students receive some financial aid.

Grants, loans, scholarships, work-study programs: these are all different types of financial support for students. Need-based aid is financial aid that a student can receive if they are determened to have financial need and meet other eligibility criteria. Need-based college-administered scholarship and grant aid at McMurry University is available to international students. Non-need-based aid is any type of financial aid given to a student who does not meet the requirements for need-based aid.

A Vision for the Future: The Second Century Strategic Plan

In September 2023, the Board of Trustees at McMurry University adopted a new strategic plan called The Second Century. This plan will serve as a guide to steer McMurry towards its future and ensure that all stakeholders work together towards a common goal over the next seven years.
