Navigating Student Job Opportunities at Miami Dade College: A Comprehensive Guide

Miami Dade College (MDC) provides numerous avenues for students to gain work experience and financial assistance while pursuing their education. These opportunities range from on-campus positions to community service roles, catering to diverse student needs and career aspirations. This article explores the various student job options available at MDC, eligibility requirements, and important considerations for international students.

Work Programs at Miami Dade College

MDC's Work Programs are designed to enable students to earn money to finance their education. Typically, students in these programs are employed in part-time positions and receive at least the federal minimum wage. Wherever possible, job placements align with the student's field of study. The amount a student can earn is capped at their total work-study award. Several specific work programs are available:

  • Federal Work Study: This program offers "on-campus" employment opportunities for students who meet the qualification criteria.

  • Community Service: These positions, located both "on- and off-campus," are designed to benefit the surrounding community.

  • Florida Work Experience (FWEP): This program provides "on- and off-campus" jobs that complement and reinforce a student's educational and career goals. To be eligible, students must be Florida residents and qualify for need-based financial aid.

  • Institutional Work Study: This program offers "on-campus" part-time positions to assist college departments with various clerical and other duties. It is specifically designed for students who do not meet the eligibility criteria for Federal Work Study or FWEP.

General Requirements for Work Programs

To participate in most Student Work Programs at MDC, students must meet certain prerequisites:

  • Completion of the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) is required, except for F1-Visa students.
  • The student's Financial Aid status must be fully processed.
  • A minimum enrollment of 6 credit hours is required (the 30 College prep limit rule applies).
  • All work program participants must complete the "Service Excellence for Student Employees" workshop, which is mandatory for new hires.

Opportunities for International Students (F-1 Visa Holders)

International students holding F-1 visas have specific regulations governing their employment options in the United States. These regulations are very clear about who qualifies for off-campus employment authorization and who does not. Understanding these regulations is crucial for maintaining valid F-1 status.

On-Campus Employment

International students with valid F-1 status may work on-campus. Initial entry students cannot begin work more than 30 days before classes start. When transferring schools, the student may engage in employment at the school having jurisdiction over the SEVIS record.

Curricular Practical Training (CPT)

CPT is employment (internship, practicum, or cooperative education) that is directly related to a student's major field of study. It can be a requirement for the degree or based on enrollment in at least one academic credit in an internship, practicum, or cooperative education course.

  • Eligibility Requirements:

    • Must be in lawful F-1 status at the time of application.
    • The job must be directly related to the student's major field of study.
    • The job must be appropriate for someone with the student's level of education.
    • Written permission from the academic department is required.
    • Enrollment in at least one academic credit in an internship, practicum, or cooperative education course in the student's department is required if CPT is not required for the degree.
  • Important Considerations:

    • Students enrolled in English language training programs are not eligible for CPT, nor can time spent in F-1 status while in English language training programs be counted towards the one full academic year required for CPT eligibility.
    • Training dates are limited to the dates of the semester.
    • Students must obtain authorization from the International Student Services (ISS) before beginning work, and they must adhere to the employment start date authorized by ISS.

Optional Practical Training (OPT)

OPT is authorization given by USCIS for 12 months (full-time) total.

  • Pre-Completion OPT: Training in the student's major field of study before and/or after completing course requirements.

    • Eligibility Requirements:
      • Must have been enrolled in valid, lawful status as a full-time student for one full academic year directly preceding the application.
      • International students are not required to enroll for the summer sessions with the exception of students graduating at the end of Summer Session A or B. Summer graduates must be enrolled the summer session in which they are scheduled to graduate.
      • The job must be directly related to the student's major field of study.
      • A letter from the student's department is required for post-completion OPT.
  • Post-Completion OPT: Extension of F-1 status. Students may apply within the 60-day grace period after graduation, but no later than 15 days prior to the end of the grace period.

  • General OPT Information:

    • No job offer is needed to apply.
    • Students may not begin employment until they receive their Employment Authorization Document (EAD) and the employment start date on the EAD.
    • Working through an agency is permitted.
    • Students cannot cancel, void, or postpone OPT.

Severe Economic Hardship

Students facing unforeseen financial difficulties may be eligible for off-campus work authorization based on severe economic hardship.

  • Eligibility Requirements:

    • Valid F-1 status for one academic year and good academic standing.
    • Hardship caused by unforeseen circumstances beyond the student's control. For example, if a student's funding is coming from his father and the father loses his business, the student would qualify for this type of work authorization.
  • Application Process:

    • No job offer is needed to apply.
    • Application forms can be obtained at the ISS office.
    • The United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) takes several months to process the application. Students may not begin employment until they receive their EAD.
    • In case the application is denied, USCIS does not provide the opportunity to appeal the decision.
  • Authorization Details:

    • Granted in one-year intervals up to the expected date of graduation.
    • May be renewed if severe economic hardship continues.
    • Part-time work is allowed during Spring and Fall semesters.
    • Full-time work is allowed during holidays or school vacations.
    • Beginning work early or continuing past the ending date constitutes illegal employment.

Important Reminder for F-1 Students

  • The student has employment authorized for post-completion OPT and will work at MDC. Although the services in fact are performed "on-campus," the source of the student's work authorization in this case is OPT.
  • DO NOT WORK PRIOR TO RECEIVING AUTHORIZATION FROM ISS AND EMPLOYMENT START DATE AUTHORIZED BY ISS.
  • DO NOT WORK PRIOR TO RECEIVING EAD AND EMPLOYMENT START DATE ON EAD (Employment Authorization Document).
