The institution began with a modest class of seven students, who engaged in a one-year curriculum encompassing lectures and clinical training at the Old Medical College building, culminating in a bachelor of medicine degree.

In 1829, a legislative act broadened the curriculum to a two-year program, awarding a Doctor of Medicine degree, and officially changed the name to the Medical Institute of Georgia. This marked a significant step in the school's development, solidifying its role in shaping the future of medicine. MCG played a role in the establishment of the American Medical Association and the standardization of medical practices. It is the third-oldest medical school in the Southeast and the 13th oldest in the nation.

The Southwest campus, in Albany, was the first residential campus opened in 2010.

Dual Degree Program

The College of Dental Medicine offers a seven-year program with the Department of Biological Sciences in the College of Science and Mathematics which allows students to earn a Bachelor of Science (BS) degree and Doctor of Medicine in Dentistry (DMD) degree in only seven years.

Application Information

The Undergraduate application via CommonApp is used for students applying to a Professional Scholars Program.

Scores should be received prior to the appropriate application deadline. Students may need to complete a supplemental application for their program of choice.

Permanent Resident Card may be required to be offered acceptance.
