Medical College of Wisconsin: A Comprehensive Overview

The Medical College of Wisconsin (MCW), symbolized by its motto "Knowledge changing life," stands as a private research university with a rich history and a commitment to advancing medical education and research. This article delves into the details of MCW, covering its origins, academic programs, admissions process, research endeavors, and its role within the Milwaukee community and beyond.

Historical Roots and Evolution

The origins of the Medical College of Wisconsin can be traced back to the late 19th century with the establishment of two institutions: the Wisconsin College of Physicians and Surgeons (founded in 1893) and the Milwaukee Medical College (founded in 1894). A significant milestone occurred in 1906 when Marquette College (now Marquette University) merged with the Milwaukee Medical College. Later, in 1970, the School of Medicine officially separated from Marquette University and adopted the name The Medical College of Wisconsin. This evolution reflects the institution's growth and its increasing focus on medical education and research.

Academic Programs and Educational Opportunities

MCW offers a wide array of academic programs, catering to students pursuing various careers in medicine and related fields. The college grants degrees such as M.D., Pharm.D., Ph.D., M.S., M.P.H., M.A., and a Master of Science in Anesthesia. It also provides combination degrees through the Medical Scientist Training Program (MSTP), allowing students to pursue a combined M.D./Ph.D. Joint degree programs are also available in collaboration with Marquette University and the Milwaukee School of Engineering, further broadening the scope of educational opportunities.

In July 2015, MCW expanded its reach by opening a new campus in Green Bay. This campus offers a focused, three-year curriculum tailored for students interested in primary care, general surgery, or psychiatry.

Beyond degree programs, MCW offers residency programs and fellowship training for physicians, solidifying its commitment to postgraduate medical education. Currently, approximately 670 physicians are in residency and 180 are in fellowship training, working alongside the college's affiliated hospitals throughout Wisconsin.

Admissions: A Holistic Approach

The Medical College of Wisconsin employs a holistic approach to admissions, carefully considering a range of factors to assess an applicant's suitability for the medical profession. While academic achievements, MCAT scores, and Casper scores are important, the admissions committee also evaluates subjective aspects such as the applicant's personal statement, essays, experiences, recommendations, and interview performance.

Research Prowess

MCW holds the distinction of being the largest research center in the Milwaukee metropolitan area and the second-largest in the state of Wisconsin. The institution is deeply committed to advancing medical knowledge through research, teaching, and training. In fiscal year FY20 (July 1, 2019 - June 30, 2020), MCW invested \$300 million in these critical areas.

MCW houses the Center for Infectious Disease Research (CIDR), which includes specialized facilities like BSL3 and ABSL3 laboratories, crucial for studying infectious diseases.

A Leader in Biomedical Innovation

At MCW-Milwaukee, students are immersed in an environment of biomedical innovation, learning from nationally recognized physicians and biomedical scientists. The college fosters a welcoming and supportive atmosphere, providing a personalized approach to help students thrive in their medical education.

Commitment to Diversity and Inclusion

The Medical College of Wisconsin is dedicated to fostering a diverse community of faculty, staff, and students. MCW ensures equal educational opportunity, employment, and access to services, programs, and activities, regardless of an individual's race, color, national origin, religion, age, disability, sex, gender identity/expression, sexual orientation, marital status, pregnancy, predisposing genetic characteristic, military status, or other legally protected classification.
