Navigating Medical School Admissions: Understanding GPA Requirements
Gaining admission to medical school is a significant achievement that opens the door to exceptional career opportunities, substantial financial rewards, and considerable prestige in both the United States and Canada. The competition for medical school admission is highly intense, and a strong academic record is crucial. This article provides valuable insights on navigating the GPA requirements for medical school admissions.
The Importance of GPA and MCAT Scores
GPA and MCAT scores are the foundation of every medical school application. Regardless of how many medical schools point to their holistic admissions process, the trend of ever-increasing stats among matriculating students shows no signs of slowing down. While written materials, such as a medical school personal statement, AMCAS Work and Activities section, letters of recommendation, and secondaries, are incredibly important for getting into med school, they cannot overcome low stats.
According to the Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC), the average GPA for matriculating medical school applicants in the 2023-2024 academic year was 3.71, with an average MCAT score of 511.7. These numbers highlight the academic rigor expected of successful applicants.
Minimum GPA Requirements
Gaining admission to medical school with a GPA below 2.50 is uncommon. Most medical schools have a minimum GPA requirement of 3.0 and do not consider applicants with lower GPAs, even if they have an exceptional MCAT score. Meeting this minimum, however, doesn’t mean you’ll automatically get in.
In 2023, the average GPA for matriculating allopathic medical students was 3.71, while osteopathic medical students had an average GPA of 3.54. This illustrates the higher GPA expectations for allopathic programs.

The Role of MCAT Scores
Most medical schools place significant emphasis on MCAT scores for admissions decisions. A low MCAT score does not entirely preclude the possibility of gaining admission to medical school, but it can limit the number of schools willing to consider an applicant. Many institutions utilize automated systems to filter out candidates who fall below a certain MCAT threshold. However, some schools may accept students with lower MCAT scores if they have a high GPA or other application strengths.
Data from various sources indicates that an MCAT score below 501 excludes many applicants from consideration at both US allopathic and osteopathic medical schools. It is advisable to consult the Medical School Admission Requirements (MSAR) database tables to identify schools where an applicant may be competitive.
Understanding Different GPA Calculations
For the purposes of applying to medical school, your GPA consists of your science GPA, your non-science GPA, and your cumulative GPA. Your science GPA is comprised of grades in medical school prerequisite classes like biology, chemistry, physics, and math. Your non-science GPA is comprised of grades in all your other classes. Each GPA is calculated for your undergraduate career, for any non-degree-seeking postsecondary work, and for any degree-seeking postsecondary programs. In other words, you could conceivably have nine different GPAs!
What is Considered a Good GPA?
What’s considered a good GPA depends on the medical school you’re applying to and how strong the rest of your application is, including MCAT scores, clinical experience, research, and extracurriculars. Here's a general guideline:
- < 3.0-3.2 GPA: Generally below the average for admitted students.
- 3.3-3.5 GPA: A solid score that allows a candidate to be considered by many mid-tier schools.
- 3.5-3.9 GPA: Highly competitive. Applicants with such a GPA have a significant advantage, especially if they complement it with a high MCAT score and practical experience.
Strategies for Applicants with Lower GPAs
If your pre-med GPA isn’t as high as you’d like, don’t stress. There are strategies to strengthen your application:

- Retake the MCAT: For those scoring below typical acceptance levels, retaking the MCAT with improved study strategies can be beneficial. A high MCAT score can offset a lower GPA.
- Enroll in a Specialized Master’s Program: Enrolling in a specialized master’s program (post-baccalaureate) can improve your GPA and demonstrate your ability to handle rigorous coursework. Special master's programs are, in fact, specifically designed for students who need academic enhancement.
- Consider Caribbean Medical Schools: Attending a top Caribbean medical school, such as the University of Medicine and Health Sciences (UMHS), may also be a viable alternative. At UMHS, admission is based on a holistic review of each applicant instead of a computer-based screening algorithm that overweighs MCAT scores and GPA.
- Focus on a Strong Application Narrative: Students should focus on crafting powerful narratives about their experiences, insights, and lessons learned in the written medical school application since that's what actually earns a student interviews.
Alternative Pathways to Medical School
- Combined Programs (BS/MD): Students can pursue a combined program, such as a Bachelor of Science/Doctor of Medicine (BS/MD) program, directly from high school. Many of these programs last 8 years, the same as the traditional route, but some are 7 years long, reducing the undergraduate portion to 3 years. Certain programs may not require the MCAT.
Holistic Review and Other Factors
Medical schools are also interested in who you are, why you want to be a physician, and whether or not you have a clue about what being a doctor is really like. Besides looking at MCAT scores and GPA, factors such as leadership, research skills, life and work experience, and trajectory of academic achievement are considered.

Addressing a Bad Semester
A bad semester early in college won't necessarily ruin your chances of getting into med school. Timing of the bad semester matters, such as whether it was early or later in college, experts say. If it happened early in college, an explanation may not be necessary. But if it was later in college, it might be recommended that the student work this explanation into their overall narrative to explain what else was going on in their life that might have led to an outlier academic performance.
For students who lack a solid explanation for why they performed poorly, it is typically suggested that the student not address this in the written application unless asked to do so in a secondary essay, and instead to be ready for that question during interviews.
The Importance of Coursework
Successful completion of premed requirements and other courses demonstrate an applicant's ability to succeed in medical school. Premed coursework can provide foundational knowledge for the MCAT.

Required coursework typically includes:
- College English composition or writing intensive, six credit hours or one year
- Mathematics (college algebra or above), three credit hours or one semester
- Biologic sciences (e.g., biology, genetics, cell biology, animal physiology, molecular biology, histology), six credit hours or one year
- Chemistry (through organic chemistry), twelve credit hours or two years
- General physics, six credit hours or one year
Recommended coursework beyond introductory science courses:
- Biochemistry, three to six credit hours or one semester to one year
- Biology, three to six credit hours or one semester to one year
- Chemistry, three to six credit hours or one semester to one year
- Statistics, three credit hours or one semester
Application Timeline and Submission
Medical school applications should be submitted as early as possible due to the highly competitive nature of the admissions process. Early submission offers a significant advantage, with most medical college admission specialists recommending late May or very early June as the optimal time-frame. Delaying the submission can cause applicants to miss the “early application advantage,” which increases the likelihood of being accepted into a preferred medical school.
Non-Science Majors
Students with a psychology or other non-science major can gain admission to medical school. According to the AAMC, statistics show that a higher percentage of students with majors in humanities, math, statistics, and physical sciences matriculate into medical school compared to those in biological sciences and specialized health sciences fields.
Holistic Review: What Else Matters?
The Admissions Committee is comprised of faculty who screen initial applications and determine the best candidates to invite for interviews. The MCAT results and academic record assist the committee in evaluating an individual’s aptitude for medical education. Equally important, however, are the applicant’s personal characteristics and experiences related to health care. A holistic approach to admissions and evaluation of the entire application includes academics, affiliation, personal statement, altruism and leadership experiences, health care experiences, research, as well the applicant’s experiences that demonstrate an appreciation of social factors that influence health. All of those areas will be reviewed to determine who receives an interview invite.
Experiences to Highlight
Experiences in a clinical setting demonstrating a commitment to medicine and providing patient care, understanding of the typical day of a physician, and/or interaction with different specialties, medical environments, and patient populations are valuable. Demonstrated experiences showcasing one’s abilities to lead, make decisions, and/or hold positions of responsibility are also important. Collaborating with others to prioritize and achieve shared goals; adjusting one's role between team member and leader based on one’s own and others’ expertise and experience are key indicators. Involvement in experiences that demonstrate initiative, achievements, and evidence of continued learning and growth as it relates to your path to medicine, including research, academia, or personal/professional endeavors is encouraged.
Letters of Evaluation
The University of Missouri School of Medicine participates in the AMCAS Letter Service. Evaluation letters are accepted only through the AMCAS Letter Service. Evaluation letters sent directly to our medical school will not be accepted. Additional letters beyond the three required may be submitted to supplement or validate other aspects of your candidacy, but no more than six letters.
