Navigating the Academic Year at Merced College: A Comprehensive Guide

Merced College, with its Merced and Los Banos campuses, serves as a vital educational hub for students seeking diverse academic opportunities. Understanding the academic calendar is crucial for students, faculty, and staff to effectively plan their semesters and stay informed about important dates and deadlines. This article provides a detailed overview of Merced College's academic calendar, including key dates, holidays, and important information regarding course schedules and campus events.

Merced College Los Banos Campus: Expanding Opportunities

The Merced College Los Banos Campus, situated at 22240 Highway 152, offers a range of in-person and online courses to cater to diverse student needs. The Los Banos Campus is committed to providing accessible education, as demonstrated by events like the one-day complete registration event held on Saturday, Aug. This event aimed to assist prospective students with the enrollment process, providing them with the necessary support to begin their academic journey.

Dr. Jessica Moran, Dean of the Los Banos Campus, emphasized the college's commitment to offering both in-person and online learning options. According to Dr. Moran, "About three-quarters of our classes are now in person, and we continue to have online courses as an important option."

Fall Semester Innovation: A Shorter, More Flexible Schedule

One of the most notable changes to the Merced College academic calendar is the implementation of a shorter semester. The fall semester will conclude 16 weeks after its commencement, marking the first time Merced College has offered such a condensed schedule across both its Merced and Los Banos campuses. This adjustment also allows for a later start date in the fall compared to previous years. For instance, the fall semester started on August 14, 2023.

Dr. Moran encourages anyone with questions about the fall semester or any aspect of the Merced College Los Banos Campus to visit the Welcome Center for assistance.

Compressed Calendar and HyFlex Working Days

Merced College is exploring innovative approaches to enhance work-life balance for its employees. One such initiative is the implementation of HyFlex working days, particularly on Fridays. This arrangement could allow classified professionals to work remotely, subject to supervisor approval. The college is carefully reviewing work schedules and staffing requirements to ensure a smooth transition to this model.

The taskforce has gathered information from other colleges that have made the transition to a compressed calendar and found that non-instructional faculty either keep their existing schedule (same as for a 17.5-week term) or increase contact hours in a compressed schedule.

It's important to note that the compressed calendar will not result in a decrease in faculty paychecks, as no instructional time is lost. Additionally, the Board of Trustees has approved the inclusion of four FLEX days in the 2025-2026 Academic Calendar, with two days allocated to each semester at the beginning of the term.

Addressing Workplace Concerns and Leadership Transitions

Merced College is committed to fostering a positive and supportive workplace culture. In recent years, the college has addressed concerns raised by faculty and staff regarding workplace issues and leadership transitions.

In one instance, faculty and staff at the college questioned a previous transfer of a dean to another leadership position. Several faculty members expressed concerns about whether the transfer fully resolved perceived workplace problems. Complaints had been filed against the dean, alleging disparaging remarks and intimidation. While the college dismissed the complaints, the dean sought a transfer to a different department.

Administrators, including the vice president of instruction, played a significant role in facilitating the transfer and maintaining communication. Despite the challenges, Merced College emphasizes its commitment to employee well-being and encourages open communication between leadership and staff.
