This article provides a comprehensive overview of key academic processes at Merced College, including transcript requests, matriculation, course repetition policies, and the process for challenging prerequisites. Understanding these policies and procedures is crucial for students to navigate their academic journey successfully.
Understanding Matriculation at Merced College
Matriculation at Merced College encompasses a range of services designed to support students from enrollment to academic success. These services aim to enhance a student's opportunity for success in their academic pursuits.
Matriculation Steps:
To become a matriculated student, the following steps must be completed:
- Application
- Orientation
- Counseling and Advisement, including the abbreviated student education plan and comprehensive student education plan.
- Follow-up and Referral.
Course Repetition Policies
The Board of Governors has established regulations regarding course repetition, primarily to limit the number of times a student can enroll in the same or similar courses. These changes particularly affect physical education, visual, and performing arts courses.
Key Changes:
- Limitations on Enrollment: Title 5 sections 55000, 55040, and 55041 now limit the number of times a student can enroll in active participatory courses in physical education, visual, and performing arts that are related in content.
- Related Content: A course related in content includes any course with similar primary education activities in which skill levels or variations are separated into distinct courses with different student learning outcomes for each level or variation.
- Enrollment Limits: Students are limited to four semester or six quarter enrollments in all levels and/or variations of related courses.
Prerequisite Challenges
A prerequisite represents a set of skills or a body of knowledge that one must possess prior to enrolling in a course. Students lacking the necessary prerequisites will unlikely receive a satisfactory grade in the course or succeed in the program. A corequisite is a course, skill, or status which is strongly recommended but not required.

Students who believe they have met the requirements (or if one of the conditions below exists) may challenge a prerequisite. The challenge procedure involves obtaining a form from the Counseling Office, which explains the necessary steps.
Important Considerations:
- Supporting documentation MUST be attached to all challenges submitted.
- Challenges may be filed at anytime during the registration period.
- Once submitted, the challenge will be forwarded to the Dean of the discipline for the course in question.
- Within five (5) instructional days, faculty will make a determination to either approve or deny the petition.
- Upon completion of the challenge procedure, the challenge will be reviewed and the student will be advised of the determination within five working days.
