The Presidential Scholarship: A Gateway to Excellence
The Presidential Scholarship is a highly competitive merit-based award offered to incoming freshmen who demonstrate exceptional academic achievement and leadership potential. These scholarships are awarded through Scholars Weekend, an annual competition held each fall for the most talented early applicants to Mercer University. Students have the opportunity to increase their merit scholarship award, ranging up to full tuition.
GMC Prep School senior Rudy Mills was recently awarded a Presidential Scholarship to attend Mercer University in the fall of 2008. The value of this full-tuition, four-year scholarship is over $120,000. Mr. Mills was selected as one of the top 340 out of 5,100 applicants invited to participate in the scholarship competition. According to Ms. Anna Sandison, Mercer’s Coordinator of University Relations, of these top 340 applicants, 140 students received Presidential Scholarships. Mills, who began attending GMC Prep in the eighth grade, plans to major in Biology and pursue a guaranteed admission to Mercer Medical School. He said, “I want to be a doctor because I would like to give back to the community.
Eligibility and Selection Criteria
Mercer University extends invitations to the most talented first-year applicants. Applicants are invited based on a Freshman Index (FI) of 3200. The FI is calculated by multiplying the academic high school grade point average (GPA) by 500, then adding that number to the SAT/converted ACT score.

You will be interviewing with current faculty and professionals, so business attire is recommended for this event. We are offering two different options to better accommodate all of our students’ various commitments and schedules. The interviews, classroom experiences, and opportunities to meet faculty and administrators will be the same at each. In addition to getting a good night’s sleep and eating a healthy breakfast, we encourage you to be yourself. Plan to bring any personal items that you normally carry throughout the day. You can expect to receive results from the weekend within 3-4 weeks after the event.
Yes, we will provide a complimentary lunch for you and your guest.

Maintaining Your Scholarship: Renewal Requirements
To maintain academic scholarships, students must enroll for a minimum of 12 credit hours in each semester- Fall and Spring (students enrolled in less than 12 hours are not eligible for academic scholarships and must submit an appeal to the Financial Planning Office for approval to receive their merit award). The minimum standard for the renewal of merit-based scholarships is a cumulative grade point average of 3.0 (on a 4-point scale) for undergraduate studies. Specific scholarships and/or academic programs may require a higher grade point average.

The minimum standard for the renewal of merit-based scholarships is a cumulative grade point average of 2.0 (on a 4-point scale) for undergraduate studies. Cumulative grade point averages and amount of credit hours will be checked at the end of each spring term. If, at the end of the provisional term, a student’s GPA is less than 2.0, the student will be required to meet with the Office for Student Success to create a success plan. Once the student has created a success plan, the student will be eligible for 50% of their original merit award. Continuation of the scholarship will be based on meeting their success plan requirements.
If a graduating student is approved for less-than-full-time enrollment, any original Mercer funds awarded to the student are pro-rated based on the number of hours enrolled.
