The School of Health and Natural Sciences
The School of Health and Natural Sciences at Mercy University offers outstanding programs that allow students to explore basic and applied sciences and healthcare careers. Students in the Health Professions programs graduate with the knowledge and skills needed for careers in hospitals, clinics, long-term care facilities, private practice, and healthcare organizations. The Biology programs prepare students for careers in hospitals, private laboratories, and research facilities.
Health Science: Health Promotion
The B.S. in Health Science: Health Promotion emphasizes disease prevention and both public and personal health promotion. The health promotion concentration prepares students for entry-level positions in a variety of healthcare settings as well as for graduate study in public and community health.
Internship Opportunities
The Health Science: Health Promotion program offers students the opportunity to complete a semester-long internship as part of the program (HLSC 399 Field-based Experience in Health Science). This course is designed for students to study the professional world of healthcare environments and make meaningful connections between their classroom learning and their healthcare internship or job experience. Topics focused on ethics, diversity, communication skills, and stress management help students integrate their classroom knowledge with their experiences in the field. Internship opportunities span a wide range of areas such as licensed rehabilitation professions, environmental and occupational health, public health, and health promotion.
Course Requirements
Any student who receives a grade below a C in a major course will be required to retake the course.
Clinical Simulation Labs
The Clinical Simulation Labs prepare students for their future as healthcare professionals. New spaces at the Dobbs Ferry and Bronx campuses comprise specialized labs designed to simulate different disciplines within a healthcare facility.

Mercy College has been awarded a five-year grant from the National Science Foundation's Scholarship Program in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (NSF S-STEM).
Faculty Spotlight: Dr. Charis Davidson
Dr. Charis Davidson teaches in the Health Promotion concentration of the undergraduate Health Science program. Her courses help students develop essential skills in health promotion including needs assessment, intervention planning, and evaluation. Her goal is for students to graduate Mercy University prepared to work towards health equity in the communities they serve. Dr. Davidson supports students exploring their interests in public health and health promotion as they decide whether to pursue a career in this field. She holds an MPH and DrPH in Health Promotion, Education, and Behavior from the Arnold School of Public Health at the University of South Carolina.
Advancing Curricular Change to Enhance Student Success (ACCESS)
The Department of Education awarded Mercy University federal funding to develop and implement a project called Advancing Curricular Change to Enhance Student Success, or ACCESS. The project will expand and enrich opportunities for students in high-demand health science careers by improving student outcomes in Anatomy and Physiology I, a gateway course, and increasing the number of available nursing training slots to meet the pressing need for nurses, particularly in the New York City metropolitan area.
Transfer Credits
Acceptance of transfer credits is determined by Admissions. They consult with any graduate program to which you intend to apply. To be eligible for a B.S. in Health Science, which is a 120-credit degree, students must complete a minimum of 30 undergraduate credits at Mercy University.
Benefits of a B.S. in Health Science
If an employer requires a college degree with a healthcare focus, a B.S. in Health Science is usually preferred. A B.S. not only improves health and wellness for families and communities but decreases healthcare costs and risks for chronic diseases.
