Navigating Los Angeles Transit: A Student's Guide to Metro U-Pass Eligibility and Discounts

For students in Los Angeles County, navigating the extensive public transportation system can be significantly more affordable with the various discount programs available. This guide provides a comprehensive overview of the Metro U-Pass, Metrolink discounts, and other options to help students save money on transit.

Understanding the Golden Eagle U-Pass

The Golden Eagle U-Pass, specifically the Spring 2026 Metro U-Pass, offers students unlimited rides on transit systems across Los Angeles County that accept TAP. This includes all Metro bus and Metro rail lines (excluding Metrolink), Foothill Transit local buses and the Silver Streak, City of Commerce Transit, Culver City Bus, Gardena Transit, LA DASH, Torrance Transit, Long Beach Transit, Montebello Bus Lines, Norwalk Transit, Pasadena Transit, and Santa Monica Big Blue Bus.

The Spring 2026 U-Pass will be available for purchase online only starting January 12, 2026. It costs $72.00 and is valid from January 19, 2026, to May 24, 2026 (18 weeks). It's important to note that all purchases are final, and there are no refunds.

Maximizing Savings with Metrolink

While the U-Pass doesn't cover Metrolink, students can still benefit from substantial discounts. As of July 1, 2025, the Student Adventure Pass pilot program, which offered 100% free Metrolink rides, ended. However, it has been replaced by a 50% Student/Youth Discount on all fares. Students with a valid student ID save 50% on every ticket. The discount is available on ticket machines at Metrolink stations and on the Metrolink mobile app as the Student/Youth discount.

Eligibility for the Metrolink Student Discount

The 50% discount applies to students of any age with a valid student ID from an accredited school, college, or university. Both your valid ticket and your student ID must be presented upon request to a Metrolink conductor.

Scope of the Metrolink Student Discount

The 50% discount applies to all Metrolink fares, including one-way tickets, single-day, multi-day passes, and monthly passes. All Metrolink tickets include free transfers to most local connecting transit systems, including Metro buses and trains, within the same day.

Additional Metrolink Perks

All riders, including students, can earn points toward free train tickets, event tickets, dining experiences, plus access to exclusive giveaways by subscribing to Metrolink’s SoCal Explorer Rewards. Metrolink also offers special discounted fares for student and youth groups/organizations, including school field trips.

Understanding TAP Cards and Fare Capping

TAP is a reloadable fare card that offers the most convenient and flexible way to pay your fare on Metro bus and rail. It is also valid for travel with 25 transit agencies across LA County. A TAP card costs $2 plus fare and includes transfers to Metro rail and bus.

As of July 1, Metro implemented fare capping, which means the more you ride, the more you will save. If using cash, please have exact fare when you board the bus.

TAP Card Options

  • 30-Day Pass: Valid for 30 consecutive days from the first tap. Expires at 3 am on the day following expiration. Additional charges apply to ride the J Line (Silver) and the Express Bus Lines 460, 487, 489, 501, 550, and 577.
  • 30-Day + Zone 1 Pass: Ride Metro for 30 consecutive days from the first tap.
