Navigating Michigan University Presidential Scholarships: A Comprehensive Guide

For students aspiring to attend Michigan universities, understanding the landscape of available scholarships is crucial. Michigan State University (MSU) Scholarships

MSU offers a range of scholarships for both resident and non-resident students, with consideration given to academic performance and overall achievements. Applying by the November deadline is crucial for scholarship consideration. Unless otherwise noted, the application for admission is all that is needed to be considered for each award.

MSU Non-Resident Scholarship

The MSU Non-resident Scholarship has various award levels granted to high-achieving students based on their academic performance, with consideration given to the overall rigor and success within their curriculum. All international students admitted to MSU are automatically considered for this award. Scholarship decisions for the MSU Non-resident Scholarship will be released by mid-February.

  • Beaumont Tower Scholarship: $5,000

#YouAreWelcomeHere Scholarship

This grant is awarded to a select group of international undergraduate students who demonstrate a commitment to furthering the #YouAreWelcomeHere message by bridging intercultural divides. It covers $25,000 towards tuition annually, renewable for eight semesters. The #YouAreWelcomeHere Scholarship application is required. Log in to your account to access the application. This scholarship cannot be stacked on top of the MSU Non-resident Scholarship.

Red Cedar Scholarship

Awarded to dependents or grandchildren of Michigan State University alumni; $1,250 annually, renewable for eight semesters.

Presidential Study Abroad Scholarship

Awarded for use with an MSU-sponsored or co-sponsored study abroad program outside of the United States; $3,000 or $5,000, depending upon the length of the program. Award must be used with the first eight semesters of enrollment as an undergraduate at MSU or before completion of the undergraduate degree, whichever occurs first.

Honors College Scholarships

In order to be eligible for the following scholarships, you must be an incoming first-year student who has been invited to the Honors College. There is no separate application process for the Honors College. All students who apply to MSU will be considered for the Honors College. Consideration for these awards is automatic, and no additional applications are required. In some cases, a limited number of awards is available.

  • Honors College Excellence Scholarship: Awarded to a select group of non-Michigan residents and international students who are Honors College invitees. The Excellence Scholarship awards $13,000 annually over eight semesters.
  • Professorial Assistantship: Offered to a select number of international and homeschooled Honors College invitees based on a holistic review of their individual academic records. Domestic students are also eligible for this offer, however their eligibility is based on having a GPA that places them in the top 5% of applicants to MSU from their respective schools.

Eastern Michigan University (EMU) Scholarships

Eastern Michigan University offers several scholarships to reward academic excellence and support students in their educational pursuits. These scholarships are designed to be accessible and renewable, making higher education a viable option for many.

Emerald Scholarship

All admitted students are automatically considered for the Emerald Scholarship - no separate application is required. residency and have a cumulative high school GPA (GPA on a 4.0 scale). Beginning Fall 2026, some award amounts require a test score in addition to a cumulative GPA. Consideration: Automatic. Awarded at the time of admission.

Scholarship awards are contingent upon verification of admission criteria via official transcripts or test scores (if applicable), as well as receipt of a high school diploma or equivalent.

Eagle Guarantee

If you earned a 3.0 cumulative high school GPA, are eligible for a federal Pell Grant and Michigan Achievement Scholarship, and have family assets less than $60,000, you qualify for the Eagle Guarantee. The Eagle Guarantee, along with your Pell Grant, Michigan Achievement Scholarship, and Emerald Scholarship, will cover the cost of tuition and you will receive an extra $2,000 to help with on-campus housing.

In addition to academic and financial need criteria, eligible students must be a traditional (under the age of 21) first year student. This award is not available to graduate, transfer, international, or post-bachelor students.

Presidential Scholarship (EMU)

A 3.5 or higher cumulative high school GPA and excellent SAT/ACT scores is rewarded with Eastern's most prestigious award for incoming first-year students, which covers full tuition and room and board for four years (valued at approximately $100,000).

  • High School Senior/Incoming Freshman for Fall 2026
  • Must be a high school graduate in 2025 or 2026
  • Must have 1.) at least a 3.5 cumulative GPA and 2.) 25 composite ACT or 1200 SAT (Critical Reading + Math)
  • SAT/ACT requirements are waived for those with a GPA of 3.85 or higher
  • Must apply for admission to Eastern Michigan University and submit all official transcripts and test scores by scholarship deadline.

4WARD Graduation Scholarship

Admitted students with a 3.0+ cumulative GPA will have the opportunity to opt into the 4WARD Graduation Scholarship.International students are eligible to participate.

Legacy Scholarship

The Legacy Scholarship is intended for students who had a parent or grandparent attend and graduate from EMU. Each award is $1,000 and is good for the academic school year (fall and winter semester).

Eligibility:

  • Have a parent, step-parent, or grandparent who graduated from EMU.
  • Be admitted to EMU with full-time status (undergraduate, graduate, or transfer student).
  • Have at least a 3.0 cumulative GPA from your most recent institution and must maintain a 3.0 cumulative GPA and be enrolled as a full-time student for both semesters (fall and winter).
  • Deadline to apply is June 1, 2026.

Northern Michigan University (NMU) Scholarships

Northern Michigan University offers a variety of scholarships based on academic merit, residency, and other criteria. These scholarships aim to make education more accessible and affordable for students.

Wildcat Merit Scholarships

Wildcat Merit Scholarships, Great Lakes and Bridge Awards are automatically awarded to admitted students who meet the GPA, enrollment term, and residency criteria. No application is necessary. NMU will use the overall cumulative GPA reported on the high school transcript. If a high school computes more than one GPA (e.g weighted and unweighted), we will use the higher of the two. Students who complete college-level work prior to receiving their high school diploma are considered to be entering first-year students (with credit). New freshman/first-year admission and scholarship policies apply.

Presidential Scholars Competition

For high school students who will be graduating in 2026 and entering college in Fall 2026, the Presidential Scholars Competition is designed for high school seniors to compete for 15 "full-ride" scholarships. Approximately 200 additional scholarships will be awarded to participants. This year's competition will take place in-person, on NMU's campus, with a virtual option available if needed. To apply for the scholarship competition, students must be admitted and have a cumulative (ninth, tenth, and eleventh grades) high school GPA of 3.50. If a student is in an early college credit program, they are eligible to compete if they are in their final year of high school, have a high school GPA of 3.5 and will be entering college as a degree-seeking student the following year.

Tuition Advantage Program

If you qualify for the Michigan Achievement Scholarship and a Federal Pell Grant, NMU is committed to providing the remainder of your tuition. The NMU Tuition Advantage is a last dollar scholarship that provides funding for tuition after Federal, state and institutional funding is used. This includes a Federal Pell Grant, the Michigan Achievement Scholarship, NMU scholarships/grants and any tuition-specific internal or external funds. NMU's Global Campus students are not eligible for the Tuition Advantage Program.

Non-Michigan Resident Scholarships

The Bridge Award fills the out-of-state tuition gap between non-resident and resident tuition rates!

Michigan Resident Wildcat Merit Scholarships:

  • $1,500/year Wildcat Merit Scholarship: 3.0-3.24 GPA
  • $2,000/year Wildcat Merit Scholarship: 3.25-3.49 GPA
  • $2,500/year Wildcat Merit Scholarship: 3.50-3.74 GPA
  • $3,000/year Wildcat Merit Scholarship: 3.75-3.89 GPA
  • $4,000/year Wildcat Merit Scholarship: 3.9+ GPA

Non-Michigan Resident Scholarships (Available to WI, MN, IL OH and IN students only):

  • $3,000/year Great Lakes Award: 2.5-2.74 GPA
  • $5,600/year Bridge Award: 2.75 -2.99 GPA
  • $6,100/year Bridge + Wildcat Merit Scholarship: 3.0-3.24 GPA
  • $6,350/year Bridge + Wildcat Merit Scholarship: 3.25-3.49 GPA

Renewal Criteria for NMU Scholarships

Renewal eligibility reviewed annually after the conclusion of each Winter semester. Cumulative NMU GPA of 3.00 for all Wildcat Merit Scholarships and Bridge + Merit Scholarships. Cumulative NMU GPA of 2.5 for Great Lakes Award. Cumulative GPA of 2.75 for Bridge Award for students from WI, MN, IL, OH, IN. Students may receive scholarships for up to 8 consecutive semesters, or until completion of first bachelor's degree, whichever comes first. Students must meet Satisfactory Academic Progress policy requirements.

Re-Entry students may have their original NMU scholarship reinstated if they: were eligible for renewal at the time they left NMU and are within the "consecutive semesters" timeline that began with the original awarding date of said scholarship. Semesters away from NMU do count in the consecutive semesters timeline.

NMU Foundation Donor Funded Scholarships: Scholarships that are offered through the NMU Foundation are privately funded by donors who have created these opportunities for a variety of reasons. Often, these scholarships or endowments are established to honor a family member, classmate, mentor, friend or faculty member.

Enrollment Requirements for all First Year Scholarships: Students must be enrolled full-time (12 or more credit hours).

Post-Baccalaureate (post-bac) students are not eligible for our First Year scholarships.

Saginaw Valley State University (SVSU) Scholarships

SVSU is committed to making college education accessible, regardless of income, and offers several scholarships to support students.

Michigan Achievement Scholarship

The State of Michigan has recently announced the new Michigan Achievement Scholarship for new freshmen entering SVSU in the fall of 2023 and beyond. Students MUST file the FAFSA to be considered for the Michigan Achievement Scholarship.

Donor-Funded Scholarships
