Michigan State University Federal Credit Union: A Comprehensive Overview of Services and History
The Michigan State University Federal Credit Union (MSUFCU) stands as a prominent financial institution with a rich history and a commitment to serving its members. Headquartered in East Lansing, Michigan, MSUFCU primarily serves students and alumni of Michigan State University and Oakland University. Federally chartered and regulated by the National Credit Union Administration (NCUA), MSUFCU offers a comprehensive suite of financial services, encompassing everything from basic deposit accounts to complex investment and insurance products. As a member-owned institution, MSUFCU operates under the guidance of a board of directors elected by its members, ensuring that its operations are aligned with the best interests of its community.
Historical Development and Growth
MSUFCU's journey began in 1937, when eight faculty and staff members at the Michigan State College of Agriculture and Applied Science established the state-chartered Michigan State College Employees Credit Union (MSCECU). This humble beginning laid the foundation for what would become one of the largest and most successful credit unions in the region.
In 1955, a pivotal moment occurred when Michigan State University adopted its current name, prompting MSCECU to rebrand as Michigan State College Federal Credit Union (MSCFCU). The following year, MSCFCU established its office in the Power House Plant on MSU's campus, solidifying its presence within the university community.
The credit union continued to evolve, and in 2008, MSUFCU opened a new headquarters building in East Lansing. This state-of-the-art facility was constructed using green building standards and received a gold Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) certification, demonstrating MSUFCU's commitment to sustainability.
Further expansion followed, with a 186,350 square-foot addition to the headquarters campus announced in November 2014. This expansion accommodated a call center, information technology department, and other member service departments, enhancing MSUFCU's ability to serve its growing membership.

MSUFCU's growth extended beyond its East Lansing headquarters. In April 2011, the credit union expanded into downtown Lansing, with a new branch located on Washington Avenue. The next year, a third MSU campus branch was opened, as well as a location in Haslett, further increasing accessibility for members.
The leadership of MSUFCU also evolved over time. In March 2015, after 41 years of service, Patrick McPharlin retired as president and CEO, and was succeeded by April Clobes, marking a new chapter in the credit union's history.
Mergers and Acquisitions: Expanding Reach and Services
MSUFCU has strategically pursued mergers and acquisitions to expand its reach and enhance its service offerings. In April 2013, MSUFCU merged with Eaton County Educational Credit Union (ECECU), based in nearby Charlotte, strengthening its presence in the region.
A significant expansion into Metro Detroit occurred in March 2016 when MSUFCU merged with Clarkston Brandon Community Credit Union (CBCCU), headquartered in Clarkston, Michigan, with a branch in Ortonville. CBCCU had previously been conserved by state and federal regulators amid an embezzlement scandal that January. At the time of the merger, CBCCU had 8,536 members and $41 million in assets. This acquisition marked MSUFCU's first major expansion into Metro Detroit, a region home to over 100,000 MSU and OU alumni.
Following the CBCCU merger, MSUFCU expanded further into the Detroit area with a new branch in Berkley in 2019. The following year, the Clarkston branch was relocated, solidifying MSUFCU's presence in the region.

Partnership with Oakland University
MSUFCU's commitment extends to Oakland University (OU), where it has maintained a presence since OU's founding as Michigan State University-Oakland in 1957. In 1967, MSUFCU opened a branch near the campus in Pontiac Township (now Auburn Hills), demonstrating its dedication to serving the OU community.
Following OU's separation from MSU in 1970, MSUFCU continued to partner with the institution. In January 2014, MSUFCU became OU's official credit union, and adopted the OUCU branding. A branch was soon opened in the Oakland Center on OU's campus, and several OUCU ATMs were installed in campus buildings, providing convenient access to financial services for OU students, faculty, and staff. In February 2022, MSUFCU celebrated the grand opening of its Auburn Hills regional office center.
Recent Expansions and Future Plans
MSUFCU continues to expand its footprint across Michigan and beyond. Recent expansions include a new Kentwood branch opened in May 2023, as well as plans for a second Grand Rapids-area branch. MSUFCU has also expanded its presence in Traverse City, with two branches serving the community.
In a significant move, MSUFCU has announced plans to expand into the Chicago area, where thousands of MSU alumni reside. This expansion includes the acquisition of Chicago-area community banks, further solidifying MSUFCU's presence in the Midwest. In November 2023, it was announced that Michigan State University FCU Plans Merger With Gabriels Community Credit Union. MSUFCU is also planning to open a branch in 2024 to 'Build Relationships' With the Community.
