Campus Life and Environment

Michigan Tech's main campus sits on 925 acres (3.74 km2) on a bluff overlooking Portage Lake. The campus is located in Houghton, Michigan, a rural setting in the heart of the Upper Peninsula. The main part of campus can be traversed in about 10 minutes.

The university offers a variety of recreational facilities and activities for students. The Portage Lake Golf Course, located two miles (3 km) southeast of campus, opened for play in April 1902 and has been owned by Michigan Tech since 1945. Mont Ripley, the oldest ski area in Michigan, is also university-owned, allowing Michigan Tech students to ski or snowboard for free.
