The Mickey Leland Environmental Internship Program (MLEIP) offers invaluable, real-world experience. Since its inception, MLEIP has placed 2,700+ college students in internships across Texas.
The Mickey Leland Environmental Internship Corporation (MLEIC) serves as the non-profit foundation of the Mickey Leland Environmental Internship Program (MLEIP). The Mickey Leland Environmental Internship Corporation (MLEIC) is a 501c3 established in 2018 and comprised of a diverse group of business leaders in public sector, higher education, private industry and non-profits. We are dedicated to advancing the next generation of leaders who are passionate about protecting the environment and impacting our world.
Who was Mickey Leland?
Congressman Mickey Leland was a humanitarian and a passionate advocate for the poor and hungry in America and abroad, traveling the world to bring attention and resources to bear. During terms representing Houston in the Texas state legislature and later in Congress, he chaired the House Select Committee on Hunger, and fought for equitable access to healthcare and environmental rights. His activism was steeped in his roots as a student in the civil rights movement.
Internship Opportunities
While the majority of MLEIP internship assignments are STEM-related, all majors are encouraged to apply.

Eligibility Requirements
To be eligible for the Mickey Leland Environmental Internship Program, applicants must meet specific criteria:
- Eligible to work in the United States.
- An undergraduate student who has completed at least 60 semester hours at the end of the spring 2026 semester OR a current graduate student enrollee.
How to Apply
The application process involves the following steps:
- First, submit an online application form. Applications are accepted September 8, 2025, through February 28, 2026.
- An academic or professional letter of recommendation.
NOTE: Complete application packages (online application and all supporting documents) received by the February 28, 2026 deadline have the best opportunity for review and selection by sponsors/managers. Incomplete application packages (for example, missing the online application or related documents) may not be considered.
Intern Expectations
MLEIP interns are expected to fulfill the duties and responsibilities of their assigned position and abide by the policies and procedures of the employing agency or organization.
