Mid-Atlantic Christian University: A Beacon of Christian Education
Mid-Atlantic Christian University (MACU) stands as a private Christian institution in Elizabeth City, North Carolina. Rooted in the Restoration Movement and supported by Christian churches and churches of Christ, MACU offers a range of academic programs, including bachelor's degrees, associate degrees, and certificates. The university's motto, "Set for the Defense of the Gospel," encapsulates its commitment to Christian values and education.
Historical Foundation and Evolution
MACU's story began in 1948 when George and Sarah BonDurant established Roanoke Bible College. Their primary goal was to address the shortage of preachers in eastern North Carolina and the Tidewater region of Virginia. Prior to founding MACU, the BonDurants had established Atlanta Christian College in 1937, with George BonDurant serving as its first president until 1947. His departure stemmed from disagreements with the trustees. Recognizing the pressing need for ministerial training, the BonDurants established MACU less than a year later.
The university's humble beginnings saw classes commencing in 1948 with just 12 full-time students. In 1950, the first group of transfer students graduated, followed by the first class to complete all four years at MACU in 1952.
Academics and Curriculum
MACU provides a variety of academic programs, including Bachelor of Theology, Bachelor of Arts, and Bachelor of Science degrees. The curriculum emphasizes biblical studies, with all students majoring in this field. Students can also pursue a double major in areas such as Applied Linguistics, Cross-Cultural Ministry, General Ministry, Leadership & Administration, Preaching, or Youth and Family Ministry.
Campus Life and Activities
The MACU campus is situated on the Pasquotank River, conveniently located less than a mile from downtown Elizabeth City, North Carolina. The university fosters a vibrant campus life with various activities and traditions.

Athletics
Mid-Atlantic Christian (MACU) athletic teams are known as the Mustangs. In addition to intercollegiate sports, MACU offers intramural sports that vary by semester, including flag football, basketball, volleyball, kickball, wiffle ball, and more.
Traditions
One notable tradition is "Sneak Day," organized annually by the senior class during the fall semester. Seniors rouse the rest of the students early in the morning, around 5:00 AM, and transport them to a secret off-campus location for a day of relaxation and fun.
MACU's annual Alumni Rally & Homecoming has been a tradition since 1949. Since 1999, It takes place in March and has been on MACU's campus.
Rankings and Statistics
Mid-Atlantic Christian University holds the rank of No. 43 in Regional Colleges South in the 2026 edition of Best Colleges. Additionally, it is ranked No. 13 in Top Performers on Social Mobility.
As of fall 2023, the university has a total undergraduate enrollment of 177 students. The campus spans 20 acres, and the student-faculty ratio is 9:1.

Notable Events
On October 3, 2010, MACU faced a tragic event when sophomore Jonathan Schipper was fatally shot in his room in Pearl A. Presley Hall. This incident brought national attention to the university.
Leadership
Throughout its history, MACU has been guided by several presidents, including George W. BonDurant, William A. Griffin, Albert C. Brown, and Harold C. Harrison. Currently, John W. mais serves as the president of the university.
