Mikey Williams: From High School Phenom to UCF and Beyond

Michael Anthony "Mikey" Williams (born June 26, 2004) is an American college basketball player currently playing for the Sacramento State Hornets. His journey has been marked by early fame, immense social media following, legal challenges, and ultimately, a fresh start. This article delves into Williams' background, his rise to prominence, his time at Memphis and UCF, and his future prospects.

Early Life and High School Career

Williams grew up playing basketball under the guidance of his parents, primarily on an outdoor court in his apartment complex. Even in elementary school, Williams was often involved in fights with bullies. As a freshman, Williams played for San Ysidro High School in San Diego.

Williams made a splash in his high school debut on November 20, 2019, scoring 46 points, along with five rebounds, four assists, and four steals in a 98-46 victory over El Cajon Valley High School. He followed this up with a 50-point performance in an 85-77 win over Mission Bay High School. On December 13, he tallied a career-high 77 points, including nine three-pointers, in a 116-52 win over Kearny High School. His outstanding freshman year led to him being named the MaxPreps National Freshman of the Year, averaging nearly 30 points per game.

He would later spend his sophomore and junior seasons at Lake Norman Christian, before returning to San Ysidro for his senior season, averaging 23.8 points and 9.2 assists per game.

Williams was considered a four-star recruit in the 2023 class by 247Sports, ESPN, and Rivals.

Social Media Fame and Notoriety

Williams' basketball journey coincided with the rise of social media platforms like Instagram. His emphatic dunking and ball-handling skills at a young age translated into viral clips, leading to a rapidly growing social media following that put him in the national spotlight. He currently boasts over three million followers on Instagram.

The standout guard began to catch internet waves in the seventh grade following an AAU game against the North Coast Blue Chips. The Blue Chips featured Bronny James, the eldest son of LeBron James. After a 36-point performance in front of LeBron James, social media took notice, and Williams’ following began growing exponentially, especially after he joined the Blue Chips and teamed up with Bronny shortly thereafter.

One million followers at 14, national hype, and recognition from NBA greats like LeBron, Dwyane Wade, and Shaq have been characteristic of the immense early success of Mikey Williams.

With all this notoriety comes immense pressure. But Williams says he has a plan to handle it all. “Everyone has an opinion on my life,” Williams told Yahoo! Sports.

Commitment to Memphis and Legal Issues

On November 5, 2022, Williams committed to play for the University of Memphis for head coach Penny Hardaway, starting in 2023-24.

However, on April 13, 2023, Williams was arrested in Jamul, California, on five charges of assault with a deadly weapon; he was released on $50,000 bail the following day. San Diego County Sheriff's Office's Lieutenant Gavin Lanning said Williams is likely to face only one charge, carrying a maximum sentence of up to four years in prison (minimum six months).

The University of Memphis released a statement saying, "We are aware of the situation and are gathering more information." On April 20, 2023, Williams pleaded not guilty to multiple charges of assault with a deadly weapon. Due to security concerns, his attorney said the court appearance was virtual.

Williams was accused of violating California penal code Chapter 9, Section 245(a)(2), which involves "any person who commits an assault upon the person of another with a firearm." According to police, Williams fired a gun at a car full of people following an altercation at his residence.

The hearing was postponed multiple times. On November 30, 2023, Williams pled guilty to one charge.

Time at Memphis and Transfer to UCF

Ultimately, Williams redshirted his freshman year at Memphis, seeing no game action. On March 24, 2025, Williams entered the NCAA transfer portal.

After a freshman stint at Memphis saw Williams redshirt with no game action, he chose to come to Orlando and truly begin his collegiate playing journey under Coach Johnny Dawkins and the Knights.

For Williams, Coach Dawkins is one of the main reasons he decided to come to UCF, which he expressed at the Knights 2024 men’s basketball media day. “A big part of the decision was Coach Dawkins,” Williams said. “Just playing for a coach like that, I know he can get the most out of me and the best out of me.”

Additionally, Williams enjoys what Orlando has to offer. “I like the city as well, that played a big part too,” Williams added. “I like the vibe here.” Williams also expressed that the coaching staff bought into him from day one.

Johnny Dawkins lauded the early efforts of Williams at media day, but UCF’s head coach also wants Williams to understand the importance of running his race and not putting too much pressure on himself. “Mikey’s been terrific,” Dawkins said. “He’s come in, he’s worked very hard, he’s really competitive." "There’s so many expectations on a young person who’s had that type of talent and was so heralded,” Dawkins added. “Sometimes, you can put the pressure of the world on yourself to come out and try to be something right away.”

Our first look at Williams in action for the Knights recently came in a limited role in two preseason exhibition games against FGCU and Georgia. Williams scored five and nine points, respectively, while grabbing three rebounds in each contest.

Transfer to Sacramento State

On April 29, 2025, it was announced that Williams would be transferring to Sacramento State.

Name, Image, and Likeness (NIL) Deal

Mikey Williams became the first American high school basketball player to sign a sneaker deal with a global footwear company. His multi-year deal with Puma at the age of 17 puts him on the same product team as other basketball stars like Breanna Stewart, Skylar Diggins-Smith, LaMelo Ball, Kyle Kuzma and Deandre Ayton.

College Statistics

During his time at UCF, Williams achieved the following statistics:

  • Scored a season-high 14 points twice: against Iowa State on Feb. 11 and on Feb. 14.
  • Pulled in a season-high seven rebounds twice: at Oklahoma State (Feb. 19) and vs. Kansas State (Feb. 26).
  • Snagged a season-high two steals three separate times: at Kansas (Jan. 28), vs. Utah (Feb. 23) and vs. Kansas State (Feb. 26).

Skills and Potential

The plethora of clips and highlights online of Williams exemplifies his talent. However, Williams is young and has yet to prove himself at the collegiate level. Now, he comes to play for a Knights team that is entering year two in the Big 12, one of the nation’s most coveted college basketball conferences.

Williams understands the challenge of this transition, which is why he has been working to get ready. “For the most part, just getting the feel back, which I’ve been doing in practice,” Williams said about his process. “I say just learning the system, just because I’m new to it, is probably the biggest adjustment, but for the most part I got everything down.”
