The Disappearance of Sudiksha Konanki: An Ongoing Investigation in Punta Cana
The disappearance of Sudiksha Konanki, a 20-year-old University of Pittsburgh student, in Punta Cana, Dominican Republic, has sparked an international investigation. Konanki, a Loudoun County, Virginia resident and an Indian citizen, was last seen in the early morning hours of March 6th while vacationing during a spring break trip. The case has drawn the attention of federal law enforcement agencies, the Dominican National Police, and INTERPOL, as authorities work to determine her whereabouts and the circumstances surrounding her disappearance.
Initial Disappearance and Search Efforts
Sudiksha Konanki was last seen on a beach outside the five-star RIU Republica Resort in Punta Cana. She was on a spring break trip with a group of students. The Loudoun County Sheriff's Office (LCSO) reported her missing and has been actively involved in the investigation.
The ongoing investigation includes wide-ranging search efforts, along with a review of surveillance video and telephone records. Interviews are also continuing with anyone who may have seen or been with Konanki before she went missing. The LCSO has filed for a Yellow Notice (worldwide police alert for a missing person) to be issued by INTERPOL.
Investigative Focus and Key Individuals
Former FBI special agent and Fox News contributor Nicole Parker emphasized the importance of determining who Konanki was last seen with. Authorities have been combing through her phone and wallet information to learn more about the people she was with.
Joshua Riibe, a 22-year-old student from Minnesota's St. Cloud State University, has been identified as the last known person to have seen Sudiksha Konanki. Riibe, who was also on spring break at the RIU Hotel & Resort, told police that he and Konanki went for a swim and were caught by a big wave. According to a Dominican Republic investigative police report, Riibe said that after getting back to the beach, he vomited and fell asleep on a beach bed.

Riibe has been questioned by prosecutors, and his lawyers requested a habeas corpus hearing, believing he was being detained illegally. While Riibe is considered a person of interest, the Loudoun County Sheriff’s Office has cautioned that he is not a suspect.
Riibe's Account of the Events
Riibe provided a detailed account of his final moments with Konanki to the Public Ministry, according to a transcript obtained by Dominican Republic’s Noticas Sin. He claimed that he and Konanki had waded into waist-deep water, where they talked and kissed. A large wave then struck them, sweeping them out to sea.
Riibe stated that he managed to pull Konanki out of the water and back to a safe spot closer to the beach. He recalled Konanki saying she was going to retrieve her belongings, which had been pushed away by the water. According to Riibe, Konanki was still in knee-deep water when she went to get her things.
"The last time I saw her, I asked her if she was OK," Riibe said. "I didn’t hear her answer because I started vomiting all the sea water I had swallowed. I thought she had grabbed her things and left."
Riibe said he felt unwell, sat in a beach chair, and fell asleep, waking up hours later to the sunrise and mosquito bites. He then returned to his hotel room.

During questioning, Riibe declined to answer eight crucial questions about the case, citing advice from his lawyers.
Evidence and Forensic Analysis
Konanki's clothes were discovered on a portable beach bed near the beach where she disappeared. Police confirmed that two images show her swim coverup and shoes that were recovered on the beach. Hotel cameras captured Riibe returning to his room that morning.
Authorities are likely cross-referencing surveillance footage with phone data and banking transactions to identify her last known movements. The FBI’s forensic teams can assist with DNA analysis, digital forensics and geolocation tracking, resources that local authorities may not have at their disposal.
Involvement of Law Enforcement Agencies
Several law enforcement agencies are involved in the investigation:
- Loudoun County Sheriff's Office (LCSO): The LCSO, based in Konanki's hometown, is actively supporting the investigation and coordinating with other agencies.
- Dominican National Police: The Dominican National Police are leading the search efforts and conducting interviews.
- FBI: The FBI is assisting with the investigation, providing forensic expertise and support to the Konanki family through its Victim Services Division.
- INTERPOL: The LCSO has requested INTERPOL to issue a Yellow Notice for Konanki.
- U.S. Embassy in the Dominican Republic: The U.S. Embassy is providing assistance and support.
Former FBI special agent Nicole Parker suggested that investigators will be combing through all of the information on Konanki's phone and wallet and figuring out everything they can about the man she was last seen with.

Possible Theories and Unsubstantiated Conclusions
Authorities initially believed Konanki's disappearance was a drowning, but they have since announced that they have not ruled out foul play. The Dominican National Police previously said in a statement.
There has been considerable public speculation about what may have happened to Konanki and who may be involved. The LCSO has cautioned against drawing any unsubstantiated conclusions and has committed to ensuring that a thorough investigation is conducted before any conclusions are reached.
Family Support and Public Appeal
The FBI’s Victim Services Division is likely already engaged with the Konanki family, providing them with investigative updates, guidance on dealing with foreign law enforcement, and support as they navigate this crisis.
The LCSO is hopeful for the safe return of Sudiksha Konanki and is committed to supporting this investigation and her family in every way possible. Anyone with information related to this case is urged to contact the LCSO at 703-777-1021.
