  • MoWest Competitive Scholarships: To be considered for 2026-27 MoWest Competitive Scholarships, ALL students should complete the General Scholarship Application requirements no later than April 1, 2026. The combined total of MoWest and Foundation scholarships may not exceed the recipient’s actual charges for tuition and related fees, course-related fees, admissions fees, campus housing and meal plan costs. No portion of MoWest and Foundation scholarship funds may be disbursed to the recipient in the form of cash or a ‘credit balance’ check. Scholarships specifically allocated for the payment of book costs will be exempt from this policy. A student with documentable circumstances beyond his or her control or personal choice will have the option to appeal this rule.
  • A+ Scholarship Program: High school students with an A+ stamped transcript will receive a scholarship of $750 per academic year.

The Federal Teacher Education Assistance for College and Higher Education (TEACH) Grant is intended to assist students in becoming highly-qualified teachers. Grant recipients are required to complete four years of qualified teaching service within the first eight years after completing or withdrawing from their degree. Failure to meet this, or any other condition of the TEACH Grant Agreement to Serve (ATS), will result in the grant being converted to a Federal Direct Unsubsidized Loan, with interest assessed from the first date of disbursement.

  • Access Missouri: Access Missouri is a need-based program designed to provide students with a simplified financial aid process, provide predictable, portable awards and increase access to a student’s school of choice. Eligibility is determined by the student’s expected family contribution (EFC) as calculated through the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). To be eligible, students must complete the FAFSA by February 1 each year, be a US Citizen or Permanent Resident and also a Missouri resident, have an EFC (Expected Family Contribution) less than $12,000, be enrolled full-time (12 hours) as an undergraduate student, maintain a 2.50 GPA, maintain Satisfactory Academic Progress and not have exceeded 150 attempted credit hours. Application Procedures: Must complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) and submit any additional requested documents to the Office of Financial Aid no later than Feb.
  • Advanced Placement (AP) Incentive Grant: Achieve two grades of three or higher on Advanced Placement exams in the fields of math and/or science while attending a Missouri public high school. Receive an award under the Access Missouri Student Financial Assistance Program or the A+ Scholarship Program in the academic year in which the Advanced Placement Incentive Grant is awarded.
  • Fast Track Workforce Incentive Grant: Eligible individuals are provided with services needed to enter, remain in, or return to suitable employment.   • Bright Flight Program: This merit-based program encourages top-ranked high school seniors to attend approved Missouri post-secondary schools. To be eligible, you must have earned a composite score on the American College Testing Program (ACT) or the Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT) in the top 3 percent of all Missouri students taking those tests. New legislation allows students whose ACT or SAT composite scores are in the top four and five percent of all Missouri students taking those tests to be eligible to receive an award beginning in the fall of 2010 (conditional on sufficient state appropriations).
  • Missouri National Guard Educational Assistance Program: Missouri National Guard Educational Assistance Program is a state-sponsored program. The program will pay 50 to 100% of the tuition costs per semester. This covers up to 30 hours per academic year.
  • Nursing Student Loan Program: To be eligible, the applicant must be a Missouri resident attending a Missouri institution seeking an education leading to licensure as a practical or professional nurse. Missouri residents are those who lived in this state for more than one year for any purpose other than to attend an educational institution. Must be enrolled or accepted full time (with the exception of doctoral students seeking Ph.D., D.N.P. or Ed.D.) and the nursing program must have an 80% pass rate.
  • Missouri Returning Heroes’ Education Act: On August 28, 2008, the Missouri Returning Heroes’ Education Act (Senate Bill 830) was enacted into law. To remain eligible for this waiver, you must maintain an overall GPA of 2.50 or higher.
  • MO$T Program: With the MO$T Program you are able to save for future higher education costs and save on taxes, too. Open a MO$T account under the Program on behalf of a designated beneficiary. The amount contributed each year can be deducted from your Missouri state taxable income (up to a maximum of $8,000 per taxpayer per year). The investment earnings on the money you contribute to the account will be able to build on both a federal and state tax-free basis.
  • War Veteran’s Children Scholarship: These grants are available annually to children and spouses of Veterans whose deaths or injuries were: a result of combat action or were attributed to an illness that was contracted while serving in combat action, or who became 80% disabled as a result of injuries or accidents sustained in combat action since September 11, 2001. The total number of veterans that may receive a grant in any year is limited by statute to 25.

  • Training Assistance: Training assistance may be available to those who are unemployed or underemployed, seeking employment in high-growth occupations or seeking employment in high-demand occupations.
  • Fast Track Workforce Incentive Grant: The Fast Track Workforce Incentive Grant is a program designed to provide adults with the education and skills needed to enter the workforce in fields that are in high demand. Changes to the program made during the 2022 legislative session became effective on August 28, 2022.

Central Missouri Police Academy

The Central Missouri Police Academy (CMPA) is another key institution for law enforcement training in the state.

Academy Overview

Coursework for this certificate program comes from an existing program for a Basic 600 hour Class-A Academy, licensed by the Missouri Department of Public Safety’s Peace Officer Standards and Training Program. During the 825-850 scheduled hours of the course, you will be eligible to receive up to 18 hours of Credit through Prior Learning toward a bachelor’s degree and are eligible to become a licensed peace officer upon passing the POST exam. It is our belief that by adding this certificate program from the University of Central Missouri, non-degree seeking students will be encouraged to pursue a degree, and all graduates will enhance their resumes and ability to compete in a highly selective field. Our recruitment day is typically held a month or so after the academy class begins, when we have enough cadets that are not already sponsored.

Training and Curriculum

Our graduates go through a rigorous academic and physical training regimen at this academy. In addition to the 600 hour mandated curriculum, and since we are part of the Missouri Safety Center, we provide additional SFST training making students eligible for Type III SFST certification upon commission as a Peace Officer. We have the newest MILO Training System that provides modern and effective use of force training. We support the University of Central Missouri’s effort to provide experiential training in a real world environment, allowing students to develop skills and become employed long before they complete their degrees. In addition to the 600 hour mandated curriculum we provide additional Standardized Field Sobriety Testing (SFST) training making you eligible for Type III SFST certification upon commission as a Peace Officer (most academies only provide Type I training).

Instructors and Leadership

Lowry is a 30-year veteran of law enforcement. He spent his career with the Warrensburg Police Department and recently retired as a lieutenant. Throughout his career, Lowry has continued to enhance his knowledge of law enforcement through professional development and education. Lowry’s responsibilities as CMPA director will include academy oversight, continued development of new and current curriculum dealng with challenges faced by law enforcement officers today, and building relationships the academy’s partners for continued growth. Lowry commented on his goals as director, noting, “I look forward to sharing the knowledge that I have gained through these tough times. Lowry graduated from UCM with a Bachelor of Science in Criminal Justice Administration. Our instructors provide hundreds of years of collective experience.

Tuition and Costs

Cost for the Central Missouri Police Academy is currently $6,210.00 (through summer 2024). * Please note: Cost for the Central Missouri Police Academy will increase as of July 1, 2024 to $6,560.00 per cadet. More details will be available soon with an updated Handbook. There is also a fee of approximately $50 for having your fingerprints taken and processed. We strive to keep our tuition low; you’ll find us to be one of the lowest cost academies in Missouri. For those students that use student loans this helps keep your debt low upon graduation.

Recruitment and Support

Missouri and Kansas police agencies regularly recruit our students while in attendance and some offer initial testing at the Academy. military, you will feel very welcome at the CMPA and quickly get what you need to start your post-service career. Several of our instructors are former military members and, having made the transition themselves, are able to help you. The CMPA follows the requirements for the 600 Hour Basic Training Academy as designated by the Missouri P.O.S.T.

Sarantakos Scholarship
