Mizzou Out-of-State Scholarships: A Comprehensive Guide
For nonresident students aspiring to attend the University of Missouri (Mizzou), several scholarship opportunities exist to help offset the cost of tuition. These scholarships, designed for first-time college freshmen entering Fall 2026, are categorized into automatic and competitive awards. This article provides a detailed overview of these scholarships, their requirements, and how to apply.
Automatic Scholarships for Nonresident Students
Mizzou automatically screens nonresident undergraduate first-time college students for certain scholarships upon admission. These awards are based on a holistic review of criteria, including geography, legacy status, and overall academic record.
Border State Award
The Border State Award offers $3,000 per year to students residing in one of the eight states bordering Missouri: Arkansas, Kansas, Kentucky, Illinois, Iowa, Nebraska, Oklahoma, and Tennessee. Test-optional students will be reviewed holistically. This award can be combined with the Mark Twain Level 2 and Black & Gold Level 2 scholarships.
Black & Gold Levels 1 & 2
These scholarships cater to students with familial ties to the University of Missouri. Black & Gold Level 1 provides $21,500 per year to students who have a biological, adoptive, or stepparent who graduated from Mizzou. Black & Gold Level 2 offers $11,000 per year. Test-optional students will be reviewed holistically for these awards.
Mark Twain Non-Resident Scholarship
This scholarship is specifically for U.S. citizens or permanent residents who live in a county bordering the state of Missouri. There are two levels to this scholarship:

Competitive Scholarships
In addition to automatic awards, Mizzou offers several competitive scholarships that require a separate application. The deadline for these applications, including the ScholarshipUniverse Application, Stamps, and all Scholars & Fellows programs in the Honors College, is December 1. The recommended date to apply for admission to meet this deadline is November 15.
Stamps Scholars Award
The Stamps Scholars Award is a full scholarship that covers the estimated cost of attendance, plus a one-time award of $16,000 for academic development and leadership. To be eligible, students must have an ACT score between 32 and 36 or an SAT score between 1420 and 1600, as well as a 3.5 core GPA. Applicants must be admitted to both Mizzou and the Honors College by December 1 and submit all required documents by the same date. The most distinguished applicants will be invited to participate in an interview process.
Mizzou Scholars Award (Missouri Residents Only)
This award provides $11,000 per year and is exclusively for Missouri residents. Applicants must have an ACT score between 33 and 36 or an SAT score between 1450 and 1600, along with an excellent academic record. Freshman students must apply for admission by December 1. A committee will review candidates’ credentials submitted with their application for admission, with a strong emphasis on high school grades and academic rigor. This award cannot be combined with other MU grants or scholarships, and a limited number of these awards are available.
Columns Scholars Award (Nonresidents Only)
The Columns Scholars Award starts at $15,000 per year and is exclusively for nonresident, incoming, first-time college students. Recipients are automatically screened upon admission and selected based on criteria including, but not limited to, geography, legacy status, and overall academic record. This award cannot be combined with other MU grants or scholarships, such as the Mark Twain Award, Border Award, and the Academic Enrichment Award.

To be considered for general and departmental scholarships from Mizzou, students must log into ScholarshipUniverse and answer a series of matching questions. Important Considerations
- Nonresident scholarships can only be applied to the nonresident portion of tuition.
- Scholarships are only applicable to the fall and spring semesters; therefore, students cannot receive these awards in the summer semester.
- Financial aid awards from all sources (federal, state, institutional, or private aid) may not exceed the annual cost of attendance assigned by MU.
- All scholarships, grants, and financial resources received are subject to being reduced if the combined total reaches the maximum Cost of Attendance.
- All Mizzou scholarships are not transferable among other campuses of the University of Missouri System unless specifically indicated.
- All scholarships listed are funded by the Missouri Department of Higher Education & Workforce Development (MDHEWD) and are subject to change annually based on annual state funding.
- Unless noted, all scholarships/fee reductions require recipients to enroll at Mizzou the first semester after high school graduation.
- Some scholarships/fee reductions are subject to change without notice and are not to be regarded as offers to contract.
- Nonresident students who establish residency become eligible for in-state tuition rates but are no longer eligible for the automatic or competitive scholarships received on admission.
How to Apply
The application process varies depending on the type of scholarship:
- Automatic Scholarships: Students are automatically considered for these scholarships upon admission to Mizzou. No separate application is required.
- Competitive Scholarships: These scholarships require a separate application, which must be submitted by the December 1 deadline.
- General and Departmental Scholarships: Students must log into ScholarshipUniverse and answer a series of matching questions to be considered for these scholarships.
- Mizzou Alumni Association Scholarships: Students must log into ScholarshipUniverse, answer matching questions, and search for scholarships offered by the Mizzou Alumni Association organization to complete the applications provided.
Additional Information
For questions regarding financial aid and the Cost of Attendance (COA), students can contact the Student Financial Aid office. If students feel that they have additional educational costs that exceed their standard COA, they can contact the Student Financial Aid office to see if there is an opportunity to appeal to increase their COA.
