Navigating Your Modesto Junior College Transcript Request and Academic Journey
Embarking on your academic career at Modesto Junior College (MJC) is an exciting step. As a new student, understanding the processes, resources, and requirements is crucial for a successful journey. This article serves as a comprehensive guide to navigating MJC, with a particular focus on transcript requests and academic planning.
Getting Started at MJC
As a new student who has never attended MJC before, there are several important steps to take:
High School Students: If you are still in high school and want to take college courses, make an appointment with your high school counselor to discuss the process, relevant dates, and your rights and responsibilities as a student.
Enrollment: To be considered a full-time student, you must enroll in at least 12 units per semester. You can also enroll in summer courses for up to 12 units.
Course Selection: Before enrolling in courses, check the course descriptions in the Schedule of Classes and the College Catalog to understand the course content and any prerequisites. For example, English 102 might require completion of English 101 with a grade of "C" or better. If you do not pass the prerequisite with a "C" or better, you will not be able to enroll in the subsequent course. For instance, if you are enrolled in Math 70 in the fall, you may register for Math 90 for the spring.

Understanding Grading and Course Repetition
MJC employs a grading system that impacts your academic record. Here's what you need to know:
Passing Grades: In most cases, you will want to earn a “C” grade or better in your courses.
Course Repetition: Students are allowed to repeat a course once if they earned a D or F grade. The repeated course grade will be calculated into your GPA, replacing the initial grade.
Utilizing MJC's Resources for Academic Success
MJC provides a variety of services to help students succeed:
Integrated Learning Centers: These centers, located on both East and West Campuses, offer assistance in math, English, science, and social sciences.

Dropping Classes and Understanding Withdrawal Policies
It is the student’s responsibility to drop classes if they no longer wish to be enrolled. MJC sets specific deadlines for dropping students from classes without academic penalty.
Dropping Before the Deadline: You can drop classes through the online registration system. If you drop a class before the specified deadline, the class will not appear on your transcript.

Counseling Services: Your Guide to Academic Planning
MJC counselors are available to assist with a wide range of needs, including educational, career, and personal matters.

Walk-in Services: For quick questions, you can utilize walk-in services, which are limited to a maximum of fifteen minutes. Be aware that during peak times, wait times can exceed an hour.
Counseling Focus: Counselors provide guidance in course selection, goal setting, planning, transfer services, problem-solving, and decision-making. They can also assist with creating a student educational plan, which maps out your time at MJC and helps you reach your goals. Seeing a counselor on a regular basis is highly recommended.
Confidentiality: Counseling and discussions are confidential, with exceptions for situations involving harm to self or others, child abuse or neglect, and elderly abuse and neglect. Counselors can refer you to outside assistance if needed.
Declaring a Major and Understanding General Education Requirements
While not mandatory upon starting at MJC, declaring a major is an important step in focusing your academic path.

Vocational Certificates: MJC offers a range of vocational certificates in fields such as supervisory management, veterinary technician, and medical assisting. These certificates acknowledge workplace competencies and job readiness. Refer to the College Catalog for a complete list. Certificates consist of specific groups of classes.
Transferring to a Four-Year College or University

Counseling is Key: See a counselor as soon as you begin thinking about transferring. They can help you determine if you have met all the necessary requirements.

As of January 1, 2010, schools are mandated to permanently maintain transcripts. In the event of a school closure, the school is obligated to provide a custodian of records - someone a student may contact to obtain a copy of their transcript. In some cases, a closed school will provide copies of transcripts to the Bureau. For requesting a transcript from the Bureau, please use the "Transcript Request Form" form.
