Monsters University: A Deep Dive into Fraternity and Sorority Life

Monsters University (MU), founded in 1313 by Arthur Clawson, is a prestigious institution located in Monstropolis, celebrating its 700th anniversary. This educational institute is renowned for its six schools of study, including the top-ranked School of Scaring, which has held the number one position by the Monster News & Report for 143 consecutive years. The university's campus, reminiscent of the University of California at Berkeley with its entrance gate and clock tower, also features the School of Scaring Building, inspired by Hamerschlag Hall at Carnegie Mellon University.

A crucial aspect of student life at Monsters University is its vibrant Greek Life program. This program includes six fraternities and six sororities, each with its unique character and traditions. The Greek Life office aims to empower the brothers and sisters of the Greek community to develop the whole monster.

Rush Week: Finding Your Monstrous Family

Each fall, Monsters University hosts Rush Week, a tradition that has persisted for hundreds of years. This event allows new students to explore the various Greek organizations on campus, ensuring that each student finds a fitting family of brothers or sisters. Participation in Rush Week is considered crucial, as MU endeavors to make sure each match is a good match.

The Sacred Bonds of Brotherhood and Sisterhood

Lifelong brotherhood is the most sacred of bonds. Words fail when describing the "forever bonds" of Sisterhood. Through the best years of your life, one group of women will always be there for you, sharing in your joys and building memories together.

Key Fraternities and Sororities at Monsters University

Monsters University's Greek Life is diverse, with each fraternity and sorority offering a unique experience. Here's a closer look at some of the prominent houses:

Oozma Kappa (OK): The Underdogs with Heart

Oozma Kappa (OK) is a collection of wholesome, good-natured misfits who have bonded over their inability to initially succeed in the Scaring Program. This fraternity, initially small in number, exemplifies that every fraternity relates somewhat to Oozma Kappa. Before Mike and Sully got there, Oozma Kappa was a house that I’m pretty sure no one would want to be compared to, but by the end of the movie, they are undoubtedly the most loveable group of guys on MU’s campus.

Key members include:

  • Mike Wazowski: A freshman with unwavering enthusiasm and determination, well-versed in the history, theory, and technique of scaring. Ever since he was a young monster, Mike’s had his eye on Monsters University, home of the world’s top Scare Program. Now a freshman and hopeful Scare student, he’s well versed in the rich history, theory and technique required to reach his goal, and the little green one-eyed monster has more confidence, enthusiasm, determination and heart than all of his classmates combined.
  • Don Carlton: A Midwestern sales monster who returns to school to pursue his dream of becoming a Scarer. Faced with the realities of the economic downturn, Midwestern sales monster Don Carlton finds himself going back to school to learn new skills and pursue a dream career in Scaring.
  • Scott "Squishy" Squibbles: A sophomore who still lives with his mother, Squishy is a sweet, naïve wanderer whose dream of becoming a Scarer was initially squashed. Scott Squibbles gives new meaning to the term “undeclared.” A sophomore whose dream of becoming a Scarer was squashed in his first year at Monsters University, “Squishy” is a bit of a wide-eyed wanderer-small, sweet, naïve and quiet-who, not surprisingly, still lives with his doting mother.
  • Art: A free spirit with a mysterious background and unique dexterity. The ultimate free spirit, Art is a mysterious monster with a questionable background. By far the strangest member of the Oozma Kappas, Art bowls over the competition-sometimes literally-with his unique dexterity and wild-card ways.
  • Terri and Terry: Two bickering brothers with contrasting personalities. When it comes to Terri and Terry, it’s hard not to ask, “Are two heads really better than one?” These bickering brothers have little in common: Terri with an “i” is a real romantic who’s quick to spot the silver lining in any situation, while older brother Terry with a “y” sports a more cynical outlook on life.

Roar Omega Roar (RΩR): The Elite Scarers

Roar Omega Roar (RΩR) is the most elite house on campus, comprised of the smartest, most skilled, and scariest monsters from families with a long history of scaring. While the RΩRs may be preppy in dress, they are ferocious in action and downright ruthless, if necessary. Although RΩR was the main antagonist in Monsters University, literally everyone wanted to get a bid there. In the movie, Eta Hiss Hiss is clearly the “alt” sorority at Monsters University. Just like your usual GPhi, both of these houses are filled with girls that are way too into astrology and smoke enough pot daily to kill a small child. Just like your typical Fiji guys, the RΩR monsters were the average preppy “daddy’s money” fraternity, but they both usually live up to the hype.

  • Johnny Worthington: The all-powerful monarch who leads the RΩRs.

Python Nu Kappa (PNK): The Smart and Merciless

Pretty in pink, the sisters of Python Nu Kappa (PNK) are not to be underestimated. Led by their fearless queen bee Carrie, these ladies are smart, cold-hearted, and merciless. There’s no denying it, these girls are HOT (yes, I just called a group of animated monsters hot). But, they also are the type of girls to sneak into your room in the middle of the night and cut your balls off if you leave them on delivered for too long.

  • Carrie: The fearless queen bee who leads the PNK sisters.

Jaws Theta Chi (JOX): The Brawny Competitors

Big on brawn but short on brainpower, the Jaws Theta Chi (JOX) fraternity brothers are rarely seen without their flashy letterman jackets. The JOX are brutal competitors who never hesitate to do whatever it takes to beat their opponent, even if it’s breaking the rules. JΘΧ and ΣAE are the kind of guys (and monsters) that you’re not quite sure how they haven’t failed out of school yet. Sure, they all might be super jacked, but you can’t remember a time you saw one of them in class. The real-life Theta Chi would’ve been a pretty solid comparison for JΘΧ, but I felt like that was way too much of a layup. Luckily for me, ΣAE exists.

Slugma Slugma Kappa (EEK): The Athletic Sisters

The athletic sisters of Slugma Slugma Kappa (EEK) spend most of their days working out and running drills to perfect their Scaring skills.

Eta Hiss Hiss (HSS): The Mysterious Goth Girls

The Eta Hiss Hiss (HSS) sorority has been around since the beginning of Monsters University and the members are as mysterious as they are terrifying. The HSS sisters might be pale, mysterious and sullen, but these intimidating Goth girls are fierce competitors and tough as nails. In the movie, Eta Hiss Hiss is clearly the “alt” sorority at Monsters University.

Key Locations on Campus

  • School of Scaring: The largest and oldest building on campus.
  • Classroom A113: Professor Knight's classroom for Scaring 101.
  • School of Scream Can Design: Where Mike and Sulley end up after being kicked out of the School of Scaring.
  • Dorms: The residence for most students.
  • Roar Omega Roar Fraternity House: The home of the RΩR fraternity members.
  • Bohol Hall: The university library, overseen by the strict Librarian.
  • Cafeteria: Where students eat.
  • School of Door Technology: Where Mike Wazowski broke into after realizing that Sulley cheated for Oozma Kappa after "winning" the Scare Games.
  • Slug's Classroom: Supposedly the classroom for the slug monster.

The Scare Games: A Greek Life Competition

The Scare Games are an annual event at Monsters University, where fraternities and sororities compete in various challenges to showcase their scaring abilities. Claire Wheeler, the Greek Council president, and her assistant serve as emcees for the games. Claire Wheeler is the Greek Council president at Monsters University, and this year she is one of the chosen emcees for the school’s annual Scare Games. This preppy-looking fraternity monster has been chosen to assist the Greek Council president in emceeing the school’s annual Scare Games.

From Scares to Laughter: A Shift in Focus

During the events of Monsters At Work, Sulley and Mike decide to change the School of Scaring into the College of Comedy, marking a significant shift in the university's focus. It's unknown of what happened to the University (the School of Scaring especially) after the original film since Mike and Sulley switched all of the monsters' energy sources from screams to laughter.
