Montana Educators Credit Union (MECU) offers a range of benefits and services designed to support the financial well-being of its members, especially those in the education sector. From healthcare and insurance options to retirement planning and educational opportunities, MECU strives to provide comprehensive support to its members. This article delves into the various benefits and services offered by MECU, providing a detailed overview for both current and prospective members.
Health and Insurance Benefits
MECU understands the importance of comprehensive health and insurance coverage for its members. It partners with various businesses to offer health and wellness services, ensuring access to necessary resources.
Health/Dental Insurance
MECU provides health coverage through the Montana Credit Union Trust Group Benefits. One notable plan is the Agate Plan, a high-deductible health plan that covers 100% of employee medical expenses after the annual deductible is met. This plan also includes a Prescription Benefit Plan. Additionally, a Dental Plan is available to eligible employees.
Life Insurance
Life insurance is offered to eligible employees through credit union-sponsored insurance. The benefit is one and a half times the employee's annual salary, including an Accidental Death and Dismemberment (AD&D) benefit. Furthermore, the coverage includes an additional $2,000 life insurance for spouses and children under 21 years of age.
Long Term Disability
MECU provides Long Term Disability Insurance to eligible employees through credit union-sponsored insurance. After 90 days of continuous disability, the employee receives 66 2/3% of their monthly salary (as specified in the plan documents) until they are no longer disabled or reach normal retirement age.

Additional Voluntary Products
MECU allows eligible employees to participate in credit union-sponsored voluntary products, including Life, Vision, Dental, Short-term Disability, Critical Illness, Legal Assistance, and Accident plans.
Retirement Planning
Planning for retirement is a crucial aspect of financial health. MECU offers a 401(k) Retirement Plan to help employees secure their financial future.
401(k) Retirement Plan
Eligible employees can defer a portion of their compensation into a 401(k) plan after completing 90 days of continuous employment with the Credit Union on a quarterly basis. Participants can make elective deferrals from 1% to 25% of their compensation. The Credit Union may match a portion of the employee's contributions, along with a discretionary contribution.
Educational Opportunities
MECU supports the professional development of its employees through a tuition reimbursement program.

Leave Benefits
MECU provides both annual and sick leave to its employees, ensuring they have time off for rest and recovery.
Annual/Sick Leave
Full-time employees earn 10 days of annual leave and 6 days of sick leave per year. Part-time employees receive a pro-rated amount.
Montana Medical Savings Account (MSA)
The Montana Medical Savings Account (MSA) is a tax-advantaged account designed to help Montana residents save for medical expenses.
Tax Advantages
Contributions made to an MSA are tax-deductible, and the funds can be used to pay for qualified medical expenses for the account holder, their spouse, and dependents. This can be a valuable addition to a financial plan for self-employed individuals, retirees, or anyone looking to manage healthcare costs effectively.

Additional Services and Policies
MECU provides various additional services and policies to ensure a seamless banking experience for its members.
Funds Availability Policy
MECU has a policy to make funds from cash and check deposits available on the same business day the deposit is received. Electronic direct deposits are also available on the day they are received. Members can withdraw the funds in cash, and MECU will use the funds to pay checks that have been written.
For determining the availability of deposits, every day is considered a business day except Saturdays, Sundays, and federal holidays. Deposits made before the close of business on a business day are considered deposited on that day.
Reservation of Right to Hold
In some cases, MECU may not make all funds from a check deposit available on the same business day. Funds may be available by the second business day after the deposit. However, the first $500 of the deposit will be available on the same business day. Members will be notified at the time of deposit if there will be a delay and when the funds will be available.
Holds on Other Funds
If MECU cashes a check drawn on another financial institution, it may withhold the availability of a corresponding amount of funds already in the account. These funds will be available when funds from the cashed check would have been available if it had been deposited. Similarly, if MECU accepts a check for deposit drawn on another financial institution, it may make funds from the deposit available immediately but delay the availability to withdraw a corresponding amount of funds in another account with MECU. Members will be notified if there is a delay and when the funds will be available.
ATM Deposits
Funds from deposits (cash, checks, or drafts) made at a MECU-owned or operated ATM will be available by the second business day after the date of deposit.
Treasury Checks and Wire Transfers
Treasury checks deposited to the account of the named payee will be available on the first business day following the day the deposit is received. For domestic wire transfers, the name of the account holder, account number, routing number, and the name of their financial institution are required. If the total amount of the wire transfer is more than $3,000, the address of the financial institution is also needed.
Machine-Readable Files
Federal legislation requires groups like MECU to provide access to machine-readable files that include detailed pricing information for facilities and providers, as well as detailing negotiated rates, historical payments, and prescription costs. EBMS, alongside the PPO network, First Choice Health Network, is working to provide this information.
Loan Services
MECU offers various loan services to meet the financial needs of its members, including financing options for vehicles and mortgages.
Vehicle Loans
MECU provides financing up to 105% of the approximate retail value of a vehicle. Rates and payments are based on a 36-month term, with the loan rate depending on the term, credit score, and credit tiers. The lowest rates are available for those with a credit score of 670 or above.
Mortgage Loans
MECU offers mortgage loans with competitive rates. The Annual Percentage Rate (APR) is calculated on a loan amount of $100,000. Rates are subject to change and are not guaranteed until a formal lock is processed. Property insurance is required on all mortgages, and there is no prepayment penalty. Closing costs are approximately $1,600. Payments do not include amounts for taxes and insurance premiums.
Career Opportunities
MECU offers rewarding and stable career opportunities, particularly for tellers who serve as the first point of contact for members.
Teller Positions
Tellers at MECU create a warm, professional, and welcoming experience for members, whether in the lobby, drive-thru, or through Personal Teller Machines (PTMs). Guided by core values of Innovation, Dedication, Empowerment, and Authenticity, tellers build meaningful relationships, offer thoughtful guidance, and help members confidently manage their finances.
Employee Benefits
MECU offers a competitive benefit package to its employees, including health insurance, life and AD&D insurance, 401(k), generous paid time off, holidays, health savings or flex plans, and voluntary insurance products.
