What is the Morehead-Cain Scholarship?

The Morehead-Cain Scholarship, also known as the UNC Morehead Scholarship, is a merit-based scholarship awarded by a private organization to students applying to UNC-Chapel Hill. Unlike some other UNC scholarships and UNC-Chapel Hill scholarships that are need-based or funded by the government, the Morehead-Cain is supported by the Morehead-Cain Foundation.

The scholarship covers the full cost of college, including:

Four years of tuition (at the in-state rate for North Carolina residents)
Four summer enrichment experiences
Housing
Fees

For North Carolina residents, the scholarship is worth at least $36,000, while for out-of-state students, it can be worth over $109,000. The UNC Morehead scholarship covers almost every aspect of life at UNC.

Eligibility Requirements

There are three primary eligibility components for the Morehead-Cain Scholarship:

High School Graduation: Applicants must be on track to graduate high school in the spring of the year they are applying.
Competitive Applicant to UNC-Chapel Hill: A stellar academic record, strong extracurricular involvement, and demonstrated leadership skills are essential. The Morehead-Cain selection committee does not disadvantage students who are unable or choose not to submit test scores in the review process.
Nomination: Typically, your high school must nominate you to apply.

Out-of-state students are eligible for the Morehead-Cain Scholarship.

The Application Process

The Morehead-Cain application process is rigorous and involves several steps:

Nomination: Students from North Carolina, the United Kingdom, and Canada can apply without an official school nomination. Students who attend school in North Carolina, Canada, or the United Kingdom may begin applying as soon as the Morehead-Cain foundation releases the application. Students who attend an out-of-state or other international nominating school may need to wait slightly longer. Once your school notifies you that you are a nominee, you can begin the application process.
Application Submission: The application opens on August 15th and closes on October 1st. Enter in your school information, your counselor information, and your recommender.
Letters of Recommendation: A letter of recommendation is required. A good recommender should be able to comment on your leadership skills, your character, and your commitment to learning. Before you even log into the application portal, you should choose your recommender. Their final deadline for submitting is the same as yours ( October 1). We ask each of our applicants to list one person who can recommend them for the scholarship. Your recommender should be someone who knows you well. Ideally, your recommender would be able to help us get to know you even beyond the project(s) you’ve worked on directly with that person. Completing these steps right away is smart because your recommender’s and counselor’s deadline for completing their portions of your application is the same as your final submission deadline.
Essays: The Morehead-Cain application includes an essay portion. Just like with other scholarships for college, and other college essays, your Morehead-Cain application should be a reflection of you. What you care about, who you are, and who you want to be.
Finalist Notification: Finalists are notified in mid-January.
Final Selection Experience: In early February, finalists participate in a selection experience.
Award Notification: Students who are awarded the scholarship are notified after the final selection experience.

The Morehead-Cain deadline is earlier than the UNC Chapel-Hill Early Action deadline. Therefore, you will need to finish this application before you submit your college application to UNC.

Admissions Referral Program (ARP)

Out-of-state students who do not attend nominating schools may be eligible for nomination through the Admissions Referral Program (ARP). Students applying through the ARP must apply Early Action to UNC. During the Early Action process, the UNC Admissions Office notifies Morehead-Cain of exceptional out-of-state students. Morehead-Cain notifies all students selected for nomination through the ARP by mid-December.

Other UNC Scholarships

While the Morehead-Cain Scholarship is highly competitive, UNC offers a variety of other academic scholarships and financial aid options. UNC is proud to offer Academic Scholarships to a small number of outstanding students each year. The University offers academic scholarships based on a detailed and comprehensive review of your application for admission. If you are selected for an Academic Scholarship, you will see your scholarship offer letter in your MyCarolina portal. If you are selected for an academic scholarship, you’ll be notified that you are receiving a scholarship from Carolina and the scholarship value.

Academic Scholarships

UNC offers a number of academic scholarships that are merit-based. Merit scholarships are based on demonstrated academic performance and personal achievements. UNC awards these scholarships based on your UNC application. There is no minimum GPA or test score required for consideration, nor is there any GPA or test score that guarantees a scholarship offer. Criteria include academic achievement, leadership qualities, commitment to service and potential for success at the University. Scholarships range in value from $3,000 all the way up to full cost of attendance.

Need-Based Scholarships and Grants

Some UNC scholarships are based on financial need. This is different than need-based scholarships and grants, which take your financial need into account. For need-based UNC scholarships and UNC-Chapel Hill scholarships like the Carolina Covenant or the Bridge Builders, it’s a similar process. UNC awareds these UNC scholarships to students based on financial need.

Scholarships for Non-Resident Students

Non-resident students (self-disclosed or as determined by RDS), who receive a full scholarship (tuition, fees, housing, and meals), are charged for tuition at the NC resident rate, beginning their first fall semester. This means the offered value of your scholarship is based on the resident rate instead of the non-resident rate. Please note that if you take Summer School at Carolina before you first fall semester, this provision does not apply.

Additional Information

Some Academic Scholarships take financial need into consideration. There are three UNC scholarships that have supplemental requirements in addition to completing the admissions application. We are also pleased to host private scholarship foundations. These scholarships may require supplemental applications or interviews. Many of these awards are supported by our generous donors.

Morehead-Cain Global Fellows Program

Students selected for the 2026-2027 Global Fellows Program must have completed four semesters by August 2026, will graduate in or after Spring 2028, and be in the top 25 percent of the student body at their home university. Students must be nominated by a faculty or staff member from their home institution or nominating affiliate. Share the nomination form with your nominator to complete. Applicants can start and submit their application even if their nominator has not yet completed the form. Nominations will open on October 10. EST on November 17, 2025. We recommend submitting applications as early as possible to allow time for any adjustments. EDT for students to learn more about the Morehead-Cain Global Fellows Program. Morehead-Cain Global Fellows will be full-time students at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Upon completion of their studies at UNC, students will receive an official UNC transcript with the courses they completed. Students will not graduate from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and are expected to return to their home institution to graduate. Morehead-Cain Global Fellows will also receive an official certificate from the Morehead-Cain Foundation naming them a Morehead-Cain Global Fellow.
