Navigating MyLearning: A Comprehensive Guide to SUNY's Digital Learning Environment

The State University of New York (SUNY) system is committed to providing accessible and innovative learning experiences for its students. A cornerstone of this commitment is the SUNY Digital Learning Environment (DLE), with Brightspace Learning Management System serving as its hub. MyLearning, powered by Brightspace, offers a centralized platform for students, faculty, and staff to engage in online learning, access resources, and collaborate effectively.

Accessing MyLearning: A Step-by-Step Guide

For students at the Queens Educational Opportunity Center (EOC), accessing Brightspace involves a straightforward process:

  1. Open an internet browser.
  2. Click the address bar at the top of the screen.
  3. Type in the address: (Presumably, the address of the Brightspace login page, which should be provided by the institution).
  4. Click “NETWORK LOGIN” button.
  5. Click the dropdown arrow to select the campus.
  6. Select UCAWD as the “SUNY Campus Selection.”
  7. Click “login.”
  8. Sign in to your account. Your instructor or assigned personnel will provide your username. Enter your password.
  9. A temporary password will be provided upon your first login.
  10. Enter your temporary password, create a new password, and then enter it again to verify.
  11. Create a recovery routine to reset your password if forgotten.
  12. You will then be logged in.

The SUNY Digital Learning Environment (DLE): A Collaborative Endeavor

The SUNY DLE is the result of collaborative work from the SUNY DLE Templates Creation workgroup, represented by over 50 members from across the SUNY System. The project has produced an array of resources in addition to a set of online course templates in a variety of instructional modalities.

The implementation of the SUNY Digital Learning Environment is being rolled out in cohorts. Over 240 representatives from 30 campuses that comprise Cohort 1 went through the Brightspace implementation tasks and activities, moving through a multi-month process involving academic and technical planning, training, testing, and piloting.

Change Leadership in the DLE

Change leadership provides a structured process for guiding teams through change. This allows leaders to focus their attention and energies on supporting and engaging team members in building a culture of resilience amidst change. Over 50 representatives from the 8 campuses that comprise Cohort 4 participated in a virtual kick-off meeting.

Expanding Access and Resources

A new FACT2 task group has been formed to explore possibilities for indexing and system-wide sharing of educational materials developed by SUNY faculty, instructional designers, and others. Over 91 representatives from the 11 campuses that comprise Cohort 3 participated in a virtual kick-off meeting. Campuses for Cohorts 2-4 have also been named.

The cohort selection process drives the timeline for each institution, dictating the schedule for training, planning, and the transition to SUNY’s new digital learning environment. SUNY selected Desire2Learn’s (D2L) Brightspace Learning Management System to serve as the hub of its Digital Learning Environment after a broad and consultative Request for Proposal process. The implementation is designed to be in the best interest of campuses, faculty, staff, and students through a cohort approach that includes options for pilot programs before full campus implementation.

SUNY's Commitment to Student Success

SUNY's commitment extends beyond the digital realm. State University of New York Chancellor John B. King Jr. has been actively involved in initiatives to support students, including:

  • Child Care Service Extensions: Supporting adult learners by extending child care services at Dutchess Community College and Monroe Community College.
  • Military Tuition Rate Program: Highlighting SUNY's Military Tuition Rate Program, as demonstrated by a visit to Empire State University.

SUNY Leadership and Vision

State University of New York Chancellor John B. King Jr. has been a vocal advocate for higher education.
