NABA National Scholarship: Requirements and Opportunities for Aspiring Professionals

The National Association of Black Accountants (NABA) is committed to fostering the growth and success of African Americans and other minorities in the accounting profession. Established in 1969 by a group of nine African-American accountants, NABA addresses the historical underrepresentation of minorities in the field. NABA actively collaborates with accounting firms, corporations, schools, and colleges to facilitate the placement of minority candidates in accounting positions. NABA makes available student scholarships at both the national and local levels. Scholarships are awarded to deserving and successful college students to assist in furthering their education.

NABA's programs are designed to strengthen the skills of its student members, provide support to professionals seeking higher levels of accomplishment, identify opportunities for minority students and professionals, and encourage more African-American students to pursue accounting. To further its mission, NABA provides significant financial assistance through scholarships. Over the past 10 years, NABA has awarded over $2 million in scholarships. NABA has provided millions in scholarship funds to deserving students.

NABA National Scholarship Details

The NABA National Scholarship is a cornerstone of the organization's commitment to supporting minority students pursuing careers in accounting and related fields. The minimum scholarship amount is $6,000, providing substantial assistance to recipients.

General Eligibility Criteria

To be eligible for a NABA scholarship, applicants must meet several criteria:

Ethnic Minority Status: Applicants must be an ethnic minority pursuing an undergraduate business major in fields such as accounting, finance, information systems, or marketing.
NABA Membership: Applicants must be a paid NABA member for the current fiscal year. To be an ACTIVE NABA member, whose membership dues have been received by NABA's National Office no later than July 15th, 2021. Dues are $35.00 for undergraduate or graduate students. Special Note: Regardless of the circumstances, once becoming a professional member, you are not permitted to return to student status.
GPA Requirements: Applicants must maintain a minimum overall GPA of 3.3 and an accounting GPA of 3.5.
Personal Biography: Applicants must submit a personal biography of no more than 500 words, outlining their career objectives, leadership abilities, community activities, and NABA involvement.

Enrollment Requirements

Applicants must be currently enrolled at a United States college or university as a full-time student. This includes:

Undergraduate students: Full-time enrollment (12 semester hours or equivalent) as a freshman, sophomore, junior, or first-year senior majoring in accounting, finance, or business.
Graduate students: Full-time enrollment (9 semester hours or equivalent) enrolled or accepted into a master’s-level business program.

Application Process

The NABA scholarship application process is comprehensive, ensuring that deserving students are selected. Scholarship applications will be accepted from April 15th - July 15th. A completed NABA Scholarship Application (NSA) is required. Please type your responses, including "N/A" for items that are not applicable to you.

Applicants must submit several documents as part of their application:

Transcripts: Combine transcripts from all colleges/universities attended into one file before uploading. Please upload in PDF format only.
Resume: A current resume is required to showcase the applicant's experience and qualifications.
Letters of Recommendation: Two (2) current letters of recommendation are required. The letters must be from a member of the accounting/business faculty school you attend. The letters must be signed and on company letterhead if applicable. Please note that you do not need to obtain and upload the letters of recommendation yourself. The application system will automatically request the letters of recommendation from the individuals you specify in your application. Your letters of recommendation are subject to verification (audit) by the scholarship committee.
Personal Biography: Please upload a personal biography of 75 words or less in Word format only. If you are awarded a scholarship, this brief bio may be listed in NABA promotional materials or publications. Be sure to check spelling, grammar, and use complete sentences.

Submission

The application system will automatically request letters of recommendation from the individuals specified in the application. These letters are subject to verification by the scholarship committee.
