National Cyber Scholarship Programs: Opportunities for Aspiring Cybersecurity Leaders

The modern world critically depends on cybersecurity, making it essential to develop skilled professionals who can protect digital assets and infrastructure. Several national cyber scholarship programs are available to help individuals pursue education and training in this vital field. These programs offer financial assistance, specialized training, and unique opportunities to gain hands-on experience, preparing participants to become leaders in cybersecurity.

Scholarships and Awards for Cyber Talent

Young people with a talent for cybersecurity have the chance to further their training with a scholarship provided by the NCSF or one of our partners. Students who score highly in the CyberStart America or Cyber FastTrack training programs in 2023-24 will be invited to apply for a scholarship award offered by the NCSF, or one of our partners, after the program closes in January. A number of additional scholarship awards and prizes may be available to CyberStart America or Cyber FastTrack program participants who meet eligibility criteria specified by the partner organization. Details of these additional opportunities, and their eligibility requirements, will be published here throughout the year.

Individuals interested in launching a cyber career can explore opportunities with organizations like the National Cybersecurity Alliance and ISACA. The National Cybersecurity Alliance is a non-profit organization on a mission to create a more secure, interconnected world. They advocate for the safe use of all technology and educate everyone on how best to protect ourselves, our families, and our organizations from cybercrime. They create strong partnerships between governments and corporations to amplify our message and to foster a greater “digital” good.

National Cybersecurity Alliance and ISACA Scholarship

The National Cybersecurity Alliance and ISACA offer an academic scholarship of $2,000 each to students who meet specific criteria. To be considered, applicants typically need to provide a letter of recommendation from an educator (e.g., professor or academic counselor) or a professional who can speak to their abilities and potential.

CyberStart America and Cyber FastTrack Programs

Students participating in the CyberStart America or Cyber FastTrack training programs have the opportunity to win scholarship awards offered by the NCSF or its partners. The highest scoring CyberStart players will be invited to complete a short scholarship application by the NCSF. These programs identify and nurture talent by providing training and then offering scholarships to further the education of top performers.

Department of Defense (DoD) Cyber Scholarship (CySP)

The Department of Defense (DoD) Cyber Scholarship (CySP) is designed to assist in recruiting and retaining highly qualified personnel in the field of cybersecurity to meet the DoD’s information technology requirements for national defense and the security of its information systems and networks. While there are a variety of educational and scholarship opportunities for the cyber workforce, many are not well known nor are program requirements well understood. The Cyber Scholarship Program provides professional development opportunities to current employees who support DoD critical cyber functions in exchange for continued service within the department.

Eligibility and Funding

The DoD CySP is funded annually, so there is not a set number of scholarships open each year. The scholarships are available for an associate, bachelor’s, master’s, or Ph.D. degrees. The DoD works with universities across the United States designated as National Centers of Academic Excellence (CAE) to develop and expand cyber-related curricula and offer programs of study for current and future cyber professionals. For participation in the DoD CySP qualified applicants must pursue degrees in academic disciplines that have a concentration in cybersecurity.

The DoD annually conducts an open solicitation for the DoD CySP retention scholarships, open to military and civilian employees, with applications typically due late in the second quarter for fall or winter when the academic year starts. In the current budgetary climate, agencies are dealing with limited training resources. This program provides a viable means to fund advanced education for personnel who are in a cybersecurity position or preparing for an assignment that requires advanced knowledge in an array of cyber disciplines, but also comes with command funding responsibilities, too.

Program Structure and Flexibility

In recent years, the master’s and Ph.D. programs were only offered at the Air Force Institute of Technology and Naval Post Graduate School as an in-resident and full-time program. The Navy recommended changes to the program to increase applicants for master’s and Ph.D. scholarships by expanding offerings to additional schools and/or offering online or hybrid programs. However, it is unclear at this time if the program options will change for 2021 applicants. Associate degrees provided the most flexibility and were offered at many community colleges. Depending on the participating school, available courses included part-time, full-time, and distance learning options. The institutions and degree programs listed are for the calendar year 2020-2021. The program requirements and participating schools can and will change for each institution. Community colleges designated as CAE in Cyber Defense Education. Full/part-time, in-resident, distance learning programs leading to an associate degree. Please note, specific program restrictions vary for Navy civilians, military officers, and enlisted applicants. Navy personnel interested in applying for 2021-2022 retention scholarships are encouraged to start researching, planning, and communicating their interest with their chain of command now. This will facilitate command support, planning, and budgeting for potential scholarship recipients.

The program offers scholarships for various degree levels, from associate to Ph.D., and partners with National Centers of Academic Excellence (CAE) to ensure high-quality cyber-related curricula. While specific program restrictions may vary for different applicants, the DoD CySP provides a valuable opportunity for current employees to advance their education in cybersecurity.

Cyber Foundations Academy

The essential skills and knowledge too many cybersecurity students and professionals are lackingThrough the Cyber Foundations Academy you will master 50 core knowledge and skills sets, many hands on, without which cybersecurity practitioners are unprepared at best and incompetent at worst. The list of skills covered in the Academy were developed through a consensus process engaging more than 500 cybersecurity professionals from more than 300 of the largest cybersecurity employers, and managed by the Center for Internet Security and the Cyber Talent Institute. The resulting syllabus encompasses “the minimum acceptable technical skills needed to qualify for an entry-level technical job in cybersecurity in 2021.” As ransomware and other scourges sweep through corporations and governments, more and more employers are refusing to consider applicants who cannot demonstrate they have mastered these foundations. The table below shows the large majority of practising cybersecurity professionals who said these skill areas are essential or valuable in their current roles. The course features hands-on lab experiences, unique practical exercises, and quizzes to consolidate your learning. Plus, finish the course with a desired and recognized GIAC certification.

Comprehensive and Hands-On Training

“I think the biggest value add for SANS Foundations was simply how comprehensive it was. “The course covered so much breadth and depth of material and it was all very interesting and engaging. I have loved it very much indeed. James did a fantastic job teaching. "We have stopped hiring people with cybersecurity degrees. They are untrainable. Now we just look for the basics - networking, computer internals, programming Linux, and Windows. The online course requires a modern web browser (Chrome or Firefox preferred), which both for security and functionality should be updated to the latest version. All of the labs are provided via a web-based system, though we do recommend students have access to a system (e.g. virtual machine) where they can try out tools and techniques on their own. Those invited to the Cyber Foundations Academy were sent full instructions of how to register for the course and certification.
