Essential Dorm Room Items for NAU Freshmen: A Guide to Comfort and Hygiene

Moving into a dorm for the first time can be stressful. Sharing a room, meeting new people, and figuring out what to bring can be overwhelming. This guide aims to help you identify dorm room essentials, ensuring your space is both practical and comfortable throughout the year. This article will focus on two items that can make dorm life significantly less stressful: a bathrobe and shower shoes.

The Unsung Hero: The Bathrobe

A bathrobe might seem unnecessary to some, but it offers numerous benefits in a dorm setting.

Privacy and Security

Most importantly, a bathrobe ensures complete body privacy as you stroll from your room to the bathroom. This sense of security is quite nice in the hall as you travel back and forth to the bathroom while everybody is walking about as well.

Keeping Clothes Dry

A bathrobe also ensures that your clothes do not get soaked in the shower stall. Before I had a bathrobe my freshman year, i would walk to the bathroom fully clothed and bring a change of clothes with me and without a doubt one set, clean or dirty, would get wet. The bathrobe allows you to change in your room before you go to the bathroom to shower and then after you're done you can just walk back to your room and change in there again.

Comfort and Convenience

For those who live in dorms that just have a shared bathroom between rooms I still suggest getting one, it serves the same purposes even in a slightly more private area and they are super comfortable.

Shower Shoes: A Must-Have for Hygiene

Shower shoes should be common sense, but for those who previously came from private bathrooms in their own homes, it can seem weird that we have to wear shoes while we shower.

Protection from Bacteria

Shower shoes have many benefits, number one being the protection from bacteria. This may seem gross but who knows how many people are in and out of the community showers in a dorm building. Wearing shower shoes protects you from the gross stuff people bring in and out of the bathroom along with the gross stuff they wash off their body.

A Touch of Fun

Along with protecting you from bacteria, shower shoes can be fun.

Beyond the Basics: Creating Your Dorm Haven

Dorm rooms are a space that allow you to be creative, but these are some must-haves for overall dorm living that are important to mention.
