A Historical Overview
The history of NCA Lahore dates back to 1875 when it was established as the Mayo School of Art in Lahore. The school was named after Lord Mayo, the Governor-General of India at the time. John Lockwood Kipling became the school's first principal and was also appointed as the first curator of the Lahore Museum which opened the same year in an adjacent building. In 1949, the school was upgraded to a college level and was renamed the Mayo School of Industrial Arts. The college offered courses in textile design, ceramics, metalwork, and fine arts. In 1958, the institution was renamed the National College of Arts. Mian Barkat Ali was appointed as principal. Designated the premier art institution in the country, it was transferred to the Ministry of Education from the Ministry Industries in the 1960s. It received degree-awarding status in 1985 and created its first graduate programs in 1999. Today, NCA Lahore is officially recognized by the Higher Education Commission of Pakistan.
