Navigating the NCAA Baseball Bubble: A Look at Tournament Projections
The road to the College World Series is paved with intense competition, strategic matchups, and the ever-present bubble watch. As the regular season concludes and conference tournaments unfold, teams on the periphery of the NCAA Tournament anxiously await their fate. The College Baseball Tournament, commencing on May 30th, 2025, will feature 64 teams, comprising 29 automatic qualifiers and 35 at-large bids. Since 2018, the selection committee has seeded the top sixteen teams, a change from the previous eight. This article delves into the intricacies of the bubble, examining teams vying for those coveted at-large bids and projecting the field of 64.
Understanding the Selection Process
Projecting the NCAA Baseball Tournament field involves considering various factors the selection committee weighs. These include overall record, conference record, conference tournament performance, strength of schedule (SOS), significant wins, and Rating Percentage Index (RPI). Early-season projections rely heavily on algorithmic analysis, but as Selection Day approaches (May 26th), these projections are fine-tuned based on the latest results and trends.
The Bubble Teams: A Closer Look
Several teams find themselves on the bubble, their NCAA Tournament hopes hanging in the balance. Let's examine some of these teams and their prospects:
Texas A&M Aggies
Texas A&M finished the year with a 30-25 overall record and an 11-19 conference record. The Aggies' RPI sits at No. 50, and they had the thirteenth-hardest schedule in the nation. Historically, SEC teams need at least 13 conference wins and a top-30 RPI to comfortably secure a bid. However, the weaker-than-usual bubble this year gives the Aggies a chance to sneak in. According to Baseball America, the Aggies needed to string together at least one more victory in the SEC Tournament to merit serious at-large consideration. D1Baseball placed A&M in the "Four to Watch" category, just outside the field of 64.
Last Four In
These teams are currently projected to be among the last to receive at-large bids:

- Xavier: With a record of 32-16, a 14-7 conference record, an RPI of 35, and an SOS of 19, Xavier is in a heated race for two at-large bids from the Big East.
- Creighton: Holding a 40-14 record, a 17-4 conference record, an RPI of 45, and an SOS of 189, Creighton's upset of Xavier improves its standing, but its weak strength of schedule remains a concern.
- Troy: Sporting a 38-20 record, an 18-12 conference record, an RPI of 44, and an SOS of 72, Troy pushed back to the right side of the bubble with a win over Texas State.
- Virginia: Despite a 32-18 record, a 16-11 conference record, an RPI of 59, and an SOS of 103, Virginia's tournament-opening loss to Boston College hurt the Cavaliers. With no games left, their resume is in the hands of the committee.
First Four Out
These teams are currently the first ones outside the projected field of 64:
- UTRGV: With a record of 36-18, a 12-7 conference record, an RPI of 41, and an SOS of 83, UTRGV will need to hang on to their No. 41 RPI and nine combined Quadrant 1 and 2 wins come Selection Monday.
- Western Kentucky: Holding a 44-12 record, an 18-9 conference record, an RPI of 45, and an SOS of 224, Western Kentucky kept alive in the Conference USA Tournament with a walk-off win over FIU.
- Notre Dame: Despite a 32-21 record, a 14-16 conference record, an RPI of 46, and an SOS of 55, Notre Dame's regular season is over after falling to Boston College.
- Southeastern Louisiana: With a 37-17 record, a 14-6 conference record, an RPI of 54, and an SOS of 132, Southeastern Louisiana's chances are slim after dropping two of three in the conference tournament.
Conference Breakdown
The NCAA Tournament field typically features teams from various conferences, with some conferences receiving multiple bids. Here's a look at the outlook for some of the major conferences:
- ACC: The ACC is poised to be the second-most represented conference in the Field of 64, with nine teams locked into the NCAA Tournament and a few more still hanging around the bubble.
- Big 12: The Big 12's debut as an expanded league has delivered on drama, with seven teams already locked into the NCAA Tournament and one more on the bubble.
- Big Ten: The Big Ten hasn't produced much at-large intrigue this spring, with just three teams locked into the NCAA Tournament and only one more still in the hunt.
- SEC: Baseball America still views the same 13 teams as locks for the NCAA Tournament that it did in our last update.
- Sun Belt: The Sun Belt is trending toward a three-bid league, with two teams locked in and Troy still hanging on the bubble.
- American Athletic Conference (AAC): This is a one-bid league unless UTSA fails to win the conference tournament.
- Big East: This remains a tight, three-team race for what's likely just one or two NCAA Tournament bids between Connecticut, Creighton, and Xavier.
- Big West: The Big West is on track to be either a one- or two-bid league, depending on whether UC Irvine wins the conference tournament.
- Conference USA: This still projects as a one-bid league, with Dallas Baptist locked in and favored to win the automatic bid. Western Kentucky is clinging to at-large hopes.
- Southland Conference: Baseball America remains cautiously optimistic about UTRGV's at-large chances, but the Vaqueros are firmly on the bubble.
Bid Thieves and Their Impact
Conference tournaments can produce "bid thieves," teams that were not projected to make the NCAA Tournament but win their conference tournament, thus earning an automatic bid. These bid thieves can steal spots from bubble teams, pushing them out of the field of 64. In 2025, the American (East Carolina), Big Ten (Nebraska), Big West (Cal Poly), and Conference USA (Western Kentucky) all ended with a bid thief. Those likely knocked out teams like Virginia, Xavier and Troy, and threw other seemingly safe teams like Arizona State (35-22), Southern Cal (35-21) and Kentucky (29-24) on to the bubble.
Projecting the Host Seeds
On the eve of selection day for the 2025 NCAA baseball tournament, the committee announced all 16 host sites.
- UCLA (42-16)
- Southern Miss (44-14)
- TCU (39-18)
- Georgia Tech (40-17)
- Tennessee (43-16)
- Ole Miss (40-19)
UCLA's inclusion seemingly indicates that the committee is leaning heavily into RPI, while the inclusion of Ole Miss and Tennessee and exclusion of Georgia Tech could mean that the committee is considering conference tournament results more and regular-season championships less in the era of super-conferences.

Vanderbilt (42-16), the SEC tournament champion and No. 1 team in RPI, finished third in the conference regular season, three games behind Texas, but they have a legitimate shot at the No. 1 overall seed due to their strong metrics that include RPI, No. 1 KPI and No. 2 strength of schedule.
