NCAA Football 14: A Deep Dive into Gameplay and Features
As the anticipation for college football builds, NCAA Football 14 emerges as a significant title, marking the end of an era for the beloved series. Released over six years ago by EA Sports, it remains a fan favorite, kept alive by dedicated community members who update the rosters each season. This article explores the gameplay features that made NCAA Football 14 a standout title and examines the elements that continue to resonate with players.
Infinity Engine 2: Revolutionizing Gameplay Physics
NCAA Football 14 introduced Infinity Engine 2, an upgraded physics engine designed to create more realistic and natural tackles and collisions. Building upon the initial Infinity Engine featured in Madden NFL 13, this iteration addressed previous flaws and awkward animations, leading to more fluid and believable on-field interactions.
Enhanced Player Movement and Control
The Infinity Engine 2 enabled offensive players with new moves and greater freedom. Key improvements included:
- Quick Cuts: Running backs and other offensive players gained the ability to execute quick cuts, allowing them to evade defenders with agility and precision. This feature added a new dimension to offensive gameplay, rewarding players who could anticipate and react to defensive movements.
- Stamina-Based Speed Boost: Replacing the traditional sprint button, a new stamina system allowed players to unleash bursts of speed to exploit openings in the defense. However, this came with a risk: depleting the stamina bar could lead to tripping or fumbling upon being tackled. This risk-reward dynamic added strategic depth to running plays.
- Option Overhaul: The option play was significantly improved, allowing quarterbacks to pitch the ball to either side. New indicators highlighted key defenders, helping players make informed decisions during the play. The game included 31 different concepts in the option game, which include all the different veer options, shotgun full triple options, shovel options, the Pistol. New mechanic for option pass plays.
The game featured a new spread option playbook that includes more than 20 New offensive formations and 350+ plays that feature the option game.
Ultimate Team: A Unique College Football Experience
A standout addition to NCAA Football 14 was the introduction of Ultimate Team. Unlike the Madden version, NCAA Football 14's Ultimate Team focused exclusively on former college players, allowing players to build a dream team of college football legends.

Building a Roster of Legends
This unique approach gave the mode a distinct appeal, as players could collect and play with recognizable names from college football history. However, the mode had some limitations:
- Limited School Representation: It was unlikely to find a complete set of players from a single school, making it challenging to build a team solely from your favorite college.
- Collection Limitations: The collections centered around random sets of cards with loose themes, making duplicate players less valuable compared to Madden Ultimate Team.
Despite these drawbacks, the Ultimate Team mode provided a fresh and engaging way to experience NCAA Football 14, celebrating the legacy of college football stars.
Dynasty Mode: Coaching and Program Building
Dynasty mode, a staple of the NCAA Football series, received significant upgrades in NCAA Football 14, focusing on coach progression and program building.
RPG-Style Coach Progression
Coach progression was revamped to resemble an RPG, with skill trees that allowed coaches to enhance specific aspects of their team. As you upgrade your recruiting, it's akin to emulating the effect that veteran coaches can have on their team and program as a whole. Players could start as rookie offensive coordinators who had to earn bonuses or begin with a veteran head coach, each offering a unique experience. This added depth and strategy to the Dynasty mode, making coaching decisions more impactful.
Immersive Recruiting Experience
The upgraded recruiting and team/game management skills activities are simpler, faster and conveniently available through an iPhone, PC or iPad. Distribute values to players from the decided amount then make adjustments (if needed) and eventually offers to get those valued prospects.

Road to the Heisman: A Missed Opportunity
In contrast to the improvements made to other game modes, Road to the Heisman remained largely unchanged. This mode, which allows players to guide a player through their high school and college careers, felt stale and uninspired.
Tedious High School Season
Playing through a full senior high school season before entering college was a tedious chore. The game made it too easy to max out player stats early in their college careers, diminishing the sense of progression and accomplishment.
Additional Gameplay Enhancements
Beyond the major features, NCAA Football 14 included several smaller enhancements that contributed to the overall gameplay experience.
Graphics Engine and Impact System
The impressive new Infinity Engine 2, which debuted in the Madden NFL 13 game, enhances the game even more with game-changing events. The Force Impact System offers more potential for jarring hits, realistic movements, and quick cuts on offense and defense.
New Animations and User Control
Approximately 500 new video vignettes add more variety and excitement. Additional focus to the runner, with new animations and dynamics while running the football, including an enhanced trucking and stiff arm system. Also including ball carrier avoidance so that RB’s will feel their way through and around their own linemen to avoid unnecessary contact and fall down.

Gameplay Recording and Uploading
Players can begin the regular game modes knowing that their greatest performances can be forever etched in history with the gameplay recording and uploading feature, which lets players choose, create and save their own highlight videos (maximum of six) from an automatically archived list at the end of each game.
Settings and Customizations
The settings still include past feature items Ice the Kicker and Home Field Advantage. Players should also change the settings (a.k.a. house rules), especially for penalties. Player creation includes importing the long-standing Game Face tool where players can adjust the created player’s appearance.
Simplified Gameplay Options
Pick-up and play fans can try the 1-button, practice, and mascot mash-up game modes. Utilize the new combination moves when running to evade the defense, while the defense can hit low or high.
Community and Continued Relevance
Despite its age, NCAA Football 14 remains relevant due to the dedication of its community. Updated rosters, created by passionate fans, keep the game current, allowing players to experience the latest college football lineups.
Simulating the 2019 Season
The game's features, such as conference realignment and coach tendencies, allowed for the simulation of entire college football seasons. This capability highlighted the depth and accuracy of the game's representation of college football.
NCAA Football 14 is a full supporter of chaos. If the upcoming season plays out anything like the simulated version, we should be in for our most entertaining fall in years.
- ACC: Determined to send Bud Foster out the right way, Virginia Tech takes full advantage of not having the Tigers on their schedule and equal Clemson’s 11-1 record. Miami bounces back from an embarrassing week one loss against Florida and knocks off Virginia Tech in conference play Owning the tiebreaker over the Hokies, they win the Coastal despite falling to FSU. As for Clemson, the Tigers get shocked by FSU, 31-30, in a game that cools Willie Taggart’s seat in an otherwise disappointing 7-5 season.
- Big 10: Nebraska starts the season with early losses to Colorado and South Alabama before rolling through conference play at 7-2. Purdue loses to TCU before going through conference play at 8-1. The Boilermakers knock off Ohio St, Michigan, Michigan State and Penn State in the same season for what I would assume is the first time ever. Mark Dantonio does the thing he likes to do in years where everyone expects his team to go 4-8, Sparty goes 9-3! Michigan State owns the tiebreaker with the Buckeyes so they head to the Big Ten championship. Ohio State discovers that interest was higher than expected for the loan they took out on their dignity and karma by allowing Urban Meyer to coach in 2018. Payback is painful as the Buckeyes finish 8-4.
- Big 12: Reminding the college football universe that logic never has and never will apply to Miles, Kansas loses their first two games to Indiana State and Coastal Carolina before upsetting Boston College and going on a 6-3 run in conference play. Texas lay a giant egg after a preseason full of high expectations, getting beat by 22 points against LSU in Week 2 before losing four straight in October and November to Oklahoma, TCU, Kansas and West Virginia. Jalen Hurts fits in quite nicely in the conference as Oklahoma has its third straight 11-1 regular season.
- PAC-12: Stanford rolls in angry after a Week 1 loss to Northwestern, and runs the table in conference. The Cardinal lose their shot at a playoff spot in a loss to Notre Dame the last week of the regular season, but notice is still served that David Shaw’s squad is back to being a national contender. Speaking of the early 2010’s Pac-12, Chip Kelly is a division champion again. The Bruins get rolled by the Sooners in Week 3, but turn things around and finish a respectable 6-3 in conference.
- SEC: In mid-October, the Hogs deliver the SEC’s most-shocking score of this century, and turn the playoff race on its head. The Tide still goes 10-2 with a 38-31 loss to Texas A&M, but the damage is done. Despite a September loss to Kansas State, Mississippi State has an unexpectedly great season. Gus Malzahn and Auburn start with a Week 1 win against Oregon. Despite having enough talent to earn one of the game’s highest overall team ratings, the Tigers can’t keep things on the right path and the Gus Bus finally slides into the ditch. Malzahn loses his job after going 5-7. Jeremy Pruitt fails to inspire hope as Tennessee endures a 6-6 season that includes a loss to BYU by 16 points, and finishes with a disappointing defeat to 3-9 Vanderbilt.
