EA Sports College Football 25: A New Era for College Football Gaming

After a hiatus of over a decade, EA Sports has revived its college football franchise with the release of EA Sports College Football 25. This new installment aims to bring the excitement and tradition of college football to gamers on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. With enhanced gameplay, authentic atmospheres, and the inclusion of real college athletes, College Football 25 seeks to set a new standard for sports gaming.

Release Date and Availability

The highly anticipated EA Sports College Football 25 was released on July 19. Fans who purchased the EA Sports MVP Bundle or the Deluxe Edition gained early access to the game starting on July 15.

Cover Athletes

For the first time in the game franchise’s history, the cover features active players:

  • Donovan Edwards: Running Back from the University of Michigan
  • Quinn Ewers: Quarterback from the University of Texas
  • Travis Hunter: Wide Receiver/Defensive Back from the University of Colorado

Edwards helped lead the Wolverines to the College Football Playoff national championship last season with 104 yards and two touchdowns on just six carries in the title game win over Washington. "EA Sports games are legendary and to see myself on the cover of College Football 25 is truly surreal," Edwards said. "It's a huge honor to join past Michigan greats as a cover athlete on an EA Sports college football game and keep the tradition going."

Ewers led Texas to a victory over Alabama at the beginning of the season last year and a College Football Playoff appearance in the school’s final season in the Big 12. "To represent the burnt orange on the real and virtual gridirons is such an honor," Ewers said. "EA Sports games were the first place I lived out my childhood dream of playing for the Longhorns, so it's a full-circle moment to now be on the cover of College Football 25."

Hunter, who plays cornerback and wide receiver, was a top recruit out of high school who shocked the landscape when he decided to enroll at Jackson State in 2021 to be coached by Deion Sanders. "I couldn't be more pumped to be part of College Football 25 and represent my Buffaloes on the cover of a game with so much excitement behind it. I can't wait to play and see myself, my teammates, and my school in the game."

All three cover athletes are active players for the first time in the game franchise’s history.

Inclusion of College Athletes

EA Sports offered FBS players a minimum of $600 and a copy of the game to have their likeness included in it. This marks a significant step forward, as previous editions of the game did not feature player names, even though they often included correct uniform numbers and approximated player ratings.

Soundtrack

The game includes a mix of licensed music, featuring tracks such as "Sandstorm", "Mo Bamba", "Kernkraft 400", "Welcome to the Jungle", "Wave on Wave", and an instrumental of "Talkin' Out the Side of Your Neck".

Background and Development

The return of EA Sports College Football comes after a long hiatus, with the last edition, NCAA Football 14, released in 2013. The series was discontinued due to lawsuits accusing EA of using players’ likeness without paying them.

Legal Issues and NIL

Following the release of the series' previous entry in 2013, Electronic Arts (EA) settled a lawsuit brought by former college football players who argued their name, image and, likeness (NIL) were used without permission or compensation. Initially, player names and likenesses were not to be included in the game. Because of this, several schools, including Notre Dame, Tulane and Northwestern refused to join the game until NIL rules were finalized. EA Sports responded by stating "player name, image and likeness is not currently planned for the game. However, we are watching the developments in this area closely and are prepared to take steps to include players should that opportunity arise." At the time, the NCAA had delayed and not voted on new NIL rules, but over two dozen states had either passed or proposed laws so that institutions couldn't enforce the NCAA's NIL rules. The 2021 United States Supreme Court case NCAA v. Alston further influenced the landscape of NIL rights for college athletes.

Development and Design

On November 22, 2022, in an interview with ESPN.com's Michael Rothstein, EA Sports vice president and general manager Daryl Holt stated that Electronic Arts would release the game sometime in summer 2024. "That's the best date for us to bring the game that we think is going to meet or exceed our player expectations…and cover the breadth and scale of what we want in the game. On February 22, 2024, EA Sports announced that all 134 Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) programs would be featured in EA Sports College Football 25 but the 128 Football Championship Subdivision (FCS) programs would not be included at launch.

Gameplay Trailer

A 21-minute gameplay trailer was premiered on July 8, 2024, featuring YouTuber Bordeaux and cover athlete Donovan Edwards. They played two games, with Edwards winning both with raw gameplay being revealed soon after. As well as the trailer, the day after, an Ultimate Team Deep Dive was posted. On July 12, 2024, YouTubers and Twitch Streamers who are in EA's Creator Network program got access to a nearly final edition of the game, in which rebuilds, player careers, and raw gameplay were shortly uploaded and streamed on YouTube, Twitch, and other platforms.
