Tennessee Baseball's Home Run Barrage: A Historic Season

The 2024 Tennessee Volunteers baseball team etched its name into the NCAA record books with an unprecedented display of power hitting. The team's performance, particularly their ability to produce multiple home run threats, has made this season one for the ages.

Five Volunteers Reach 20 Home Run Milestone

In a College World Series game against Florida State, Blake Burke's ninth-inning home run not only extended Tennessee's lead but also secured a place in NCAA history for the Volunteers. With Burke's homer, Tennessee became the first team in NCAA history to have five players each hit at least 20 home runs in a single season. Burke joined second baseman Christian Moore, third baseman Billy Amick, left fielder Dylan Dreiling, and right fielder Kavares Tears in achieving this remarkable feat.

The journey to this record began earlier in the season. Christian Moore was the first to reach the 20-homer mark, accomplishing this on April 25 against Missouri. Billy Amick followed suit on May 31 during the Knoxville Regional against Northern Kentucky. Dylan Dreiling then hit his 20th home run on June 8 in the Knoxville Super Regional against Evansville. Before 2024, Tennessee had never had two players hit at least 20 home runs in the same season in school history. Kavares Tears tied the NCAA record for the team with four players at least 20 homers when he homered against North Carolina on Sunday. The only other team in NCAA history with four players with 20 homers was Alabama in 1997.

A Team of Power Hitters

Entering the 2024 season, only six players in Tennessee history had ever reached the 20-home run mark in a single season. The fact that five players achieved this in the same year underscores the Volunteers' exceptional offensive prowess.

Chasing the Single-Season Home Run Record

Tennessee's power surge isn't limited to individual accomplishments. As a team, they have been obliterating baseballs at a historic rate. Entering the game on Wednesday, the Volunteers had already amassed 177 home runs, placing them second in single-season NCAA history. The top spot is currently held by the 1997 LSU team, which hit 188 home runs.

The 2022 Volunteers team also holds a prominent place in the record books, ranking fifth in single season home runs with 158.

The Vitello Effect

Prior to Tony Vitello's arrival as head coach, the UT program record for home runs in a season was 107, set in 1998. In 2021, the team hit 98 home runs before breaking the program record in 2022 with 158. Vitello's emphasis on player development and aggressive offensive strategies has clearly transformed Tennessee into a home run hitting powerhouse.
