A Comprehensive Look at the NCAA Tallahassee Regional History

The NCAA Division I Baseball Tournament is a significant event in college baseball, featuring a four-tier competition that alternates between double-elimination brackets and best-of-three series. The tournament culminates in the Men's College World Series (MCWS), where the national champion is crowned. The Florida State Seminoles have a rich history with the NCAA Tournament and the Tallahassee Regional.

NCAA Tournament Structure

The NCAA Division I Baseball Championship involves 64 teams. The top 16 teams are named "national seeds". The tournament begins with Regionals, where 16 locations host four teams each in a double-elimination bracket. The Super Regionals pair these regionals, with the higher national seed typically hosting a best-of-three series. The eight Super Regional winners then advance to the Men's College World Series in Omaha, Nebraska.

The MCWS consists of two double-elimination brackets, each with four teams. The winners of these brackets compete in a best-of-three final to determine the national champion.

Dominance of Florida State Seminoles

The Florida State Seminoles baseball team represents Florida State University in college baseball. The Seminoles boast an impressive all-time win percentage of .717, second only to the Texas Longhorns. They rank fifth in all-time wins and second in post-season wins.

Florida State has made 61 appearances in the NCAA Tournament, advancing to the College World Series 24 times. They have played in the CWS Championship Game or Championship Series three times (1970, 1986, and 1999), finishing as runner-up on each occasion. The program has produced over 100 All-Americans and more than 300 MLB draftees. Four Seminoles have won the Golden Spikes Award. Notable alumni include J.D. Drew.

In 2012, FSU surpassed Texas for the most all-time wins in regionals and super regionals. In 2014, FSU set the record for the most National Seed selections of all-time. In 2017, FSU defeated Cal-State Fullerton in the 1,000th College World Series game. Mike Martin Era

Mike Martin, Sr., coached the Seminoles for 40 years, during which his teams consistently won at least 40 games per season and reached the postseason every year. They advanced to the College World Series on 17 occasions. Martin achieved his 1900th win in 2017, becoming the second coach in college baseball history to reach that milestone. In 2018, he became the winningest coach in college baseball and, in his final season, the first coach to win 2,000 games.

Recent Coaching Changes

On June 21, 2019, Mike Martin, Jr., was named head coach. He led Florida State to two NCAA tournament appearances, but the Seminoles were eliminated in the regionals both times. On June 24, 2022, Link Jarrett, a former player under Martin Sr., became head coach. In his first season, the Seminoles had their first losing season since 1977 and missed the NCAA tournament for the first time since then.

Dick Howser Stadium

Mike Martin Field at Dick Howser Stadium, located on the campus of Florida State University in Tallahassee, Florida, has been the home of the Seminoles since 1983. Renovated in 2004, the stadium now has a capacity of 6,700, making it one of the top collegiate baseball facilities in the United States.

A unique tradition at the stadium involves a group of fans known as 'The Animals of Section B' leading the crowd in singing the Canadian national anthem, O Canada, before the home half of the 5th inning. This tradition reportedly began on February 13, 1988, during the 1988 Winter Olympics in Calgary, when FSU played Grambling State University.

Tallahassee Regional History

Florida State has hosted the Tallahassee Regional of the NCAA Tournament multiple times, solidifying its status as a significant venue in college baseball. In 2024, Florida State hosted the Tallahassee Regional. The Seminoles' first opponent was Bethune-Cookman, who they defeated earlier in the season. Other teams in the regional included Northeastern and Mississippi State.

2024 Tallahassee Regional Teams

  • No. 9 Florida State Seminoles: (38-14, 17-10) Hosted its regional for the 37th time in school history.
  • Bethune-Cookman Wildcats: (37-21, 24-5 SWAC) Made their first NCAA tournament appearance since 2017 after winning the SWAC Championship.
  • Northeastern Huskies: (48-9, 25-2 CAA) Making their 11th tournament appearance.
  • Mississippi State Bulldogs: (34-21, 15-15 SEC) It was the fifth time that the Bulldogs have played in the Tallahassee Regional, the first time since 2018.

Tallahassee Regional Results

In 2024, FSU swept the Huskies in their first Super Regional in five years and their first one in Tallahassee in seven years. A controversial check swing call kept Tennessee alive, and they eliminated Florida State.

Super Regional Appearances

FSU baseball has advanced to the Super Regional round of the NCAA Division I Baseball tournament. They swept the Tallahassee Regional to get here, defeating Bethune-Cookman in the opening game, defeating Mississippi State to send them to the losers' bracket, and then once again defeating Mississippi State to advance. Because they are the No. 9 seed, and No. 8-seed Oregon State won its regional, the Seminoles will have to travel to Corvallis, Oregon, to have a chance to make it to Omaha and the College World Series. The Corvallis Super Regional is set to start on Friday and will last until Saturday or Sunday, as the two teams compete in a best-of-three series in Goss Stadium at Coleman Field in Corvallis. It is FSU's second straight year making the Super Regional round and the 19th time overall.
