Understanding NCSSM Tuition Grant Requirements
The North Carolina School of Science and Mathematics (NCSSM) provides unique educational opportunities for academically talented students interested in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. This article explores the tuition grant programs available to NCSSM students, particularly focusing on the requirements and eligibility for these grants.
NCSSM Overview
NCSSM is a two-year residential program for high school juniors and seniors. With campuses in Durham and Morganton, NCSSM offers rigorous courses in math, science, and humanities. Besides the residential program, NCSSM also provides online and summer programs. NCSSM has partnered with the College Foundation of North Carolina (CFNC) to streamline the application process through an electronic application available on the CFNC website.
Tuition Grant Programs
Several tuition grant programs are available to NCSSM students, aimed at making higher education more accessible. These programs are designed to support students financially as they pursue further education within the University of North Carolina (UNC) System.
UNC Tuition Grant
The UNC Tuition Grant is a significant financial aid opportunity for NCSSM graduates. The State Education Assistance Authority (Authority) administers these grants in consultation with the General Administration of UNC, adhering to established guidelines and procedures for state-funded financial aid.
To be eligible for the UNC Tuition Grant, students must be certified by the appropriate UNC constituent institution. The Authority then remits the tuition grant to the institution on behalf of the student.

The maximum tuition grant that can be awarded to a student is $5,000 per semester. This amount may increase by 2% for any academic year in which the tuition rate at the constituent institution rises.
The North Carolina Tuition Grant Fund manages these grants. All funds appropriated or received by the Authority for tuition grants, returned grant monies, and interest earned are placed in this fund.
Tuition Grant for Graduates of NCSSM Program
A tuition grant specifically for NCSSM graduates is available, covering the full tuition costs for eligible students. This program, starting with the graduating class of 2020-21, provides tuition grants for NCSSM graduates who enroll full-time in a UNC constituent institution the academic year after graduation.
Eligibility for the tuition grant can extend up to four years, provided the student maintains continuous enrollment in a UNC constituent institution. Waivers to the continuous enrollment requirement may be available under certain circumstances.
The State Education Assistance Authority administers this grant, following similar guidelines and procedures as other state-funded financial aid programs. The grant is remitted directly to the UNC constituent institution.

If a student does not meet the enrollment requirements, the grant may be refunded. Furthermore, if a student receives other scholarships or grants that cover the cost of attendance, the tuition grant may be reduced proportionately. When funds are insufficient to provide each eligible student with a full tuition grant, the available funds are distributed pro rata.
Other Financial Aid Opportunities
Besides tuition-specific grants, NCSSM students have access to various other financial aid and scholarship opportunities. NCSSM provides resources and guidance on college planning, fee waivers, and financial aid through its counseling services.
Eligibility and Application Process
To apply for the NCSSM program, applicants must create an account on the College Foundation of North Carolina (CFNC) website. The application process includes submitting official transcripts, which can be done through CFNC. Applicants may also need to submit report cards, especially if enrolled in year-long courses.
For the Class of 2028, NCSSM will not require or accept standardized test scores (SAT, ACT, etc.). However, applicants to the residential campuses (Durham and Morganton) must take the NCSSM Math Assessment.
Recent Policy Changes and Updates
The UNC System Board of Governors has approved a policy guaranteeing residential program graduates admission to any UNC System institution. Additionally, the state budget includes a four-year tuition grant for NCSSM graduates attending a UNC System institution and covers AP testing fees for NCSSM students.
