I believe there is power in having diverse options to secure the pathway for one’s professional development and career trajectory. I discovered my passion for education serving in the public special education classroom sector for 10 years. At that time, I desired to deepen my professional knowledge to focus on strategies to improve the quality of early education, to design curriculum and policies that facilitate system-level change. My desire to achieve such goals meant that I had to earn a master’s degree in education. With many responsibilities competing for my time, going back to school would be challenging. And then I learned about an amazing opportunity to receive a master’s degree via a weekend cohort over 2 years from Averett University with New College Institute (NCI). The schedule fit perfectly into my life, and I was grateful to have this option available to our community. Two years later I graduated with my master’s degree in education. My academic experience was rigorous and afforded me the knowledge, skills, and social capital to equip and empower the families and children that I served to achieve progress in their identified goals. That experience ignited a hunger for learning, community service and engagement that I could not ignore. Later I earned my education specialist and Doctor of Education degrees from a regional university, neither of which I would have thought possible had it not been for my academic experience with NCI.
New College Institute enabled me to achieve my dream of becoming an educator without going into debt, something I could not have done attending a main campus university. Dr. Randall’s Early Childhood Education program at NCI via Longwood University prepared me for the rigors of being a classroom teacher with helpful, knowledgeable professors, and hands-on student teaching experiences. My time at NCI propelled me into a wonderful career in education, including 2 years as a history teacher at Martinsville High School, and helped me to make connections in our community which still help me to this day. It was New College Institute’s internship program that ultimately set me on the path to working for the Boys & Girls Clubs in Martinsville, and I know I would not be where I am today if it wasn’t for my time at NCI. I cannot recommend New College Institute enough to those who are interested in the programs and majors offered by NCI’s partner institutions. There are few great opportunities like it out there.
Attending New College Institute provided me with a unique opportunity to earn my degree while remaining deeply rooted in my community. This experience not only enriched my understanding of education but also fostered valuable connections with fellow educators and community leaders. The knowledge and skills gained through my degree program have been instrumental in advancing my career, enabling me to effectively lead and innovate within my school. The local support and resources offered by New College Institute have truly been invaluable in shaping my professional journey and contributing to my success in educational leadership.
I am a first-generation college graduate and began my journey at Longwood University in 2016. Talk about a full circle! I could not have made it this far without the convenience of New College Institute. Thanks to them, I was able to continue my education at Longwood University from the comfort of my new home in Roanoke, Virginia. For over three years, I have been bartending at Twisted Track Brewpub in downtown Roanoke. Their flexibility allowed me to commute to Martinsville for classes, and their support was invaluable in helping me stay afloat. I am proud to have completed my Bachelor of Science degree in Early Childhood Education, graduating from Longwood University’s campus in Farmville, Virginia, on May 18, 2024. In early March, while student teaching in Roanoke County Public Schools, I accepted a position as the Special Education Preschool Teacher at Oak Grove Elementary School. I could not be more excited about my bright and busy future as an educator and advocate.
