New England College Executive Master's Programs: An Overview

New England College (NEC) offers a range of executive master's programs designed for working professionals seeking to advance their education and careers. These programs are tailored to meet the needs of experienced individuals, blending online coursework with intensive, in-person residency experiences. Founded in 1946 to serve the needs of servicepeople attending college on the GI Bill after World War II, NEC is a private, nonprofit college accredited by the New England Commission of Higher Education. The college offers a variety of degrees, including associate's and bachelor's degrees, as well as more than 20 master's degrees and two doctoral programs.

Hybrid Learning Model

NEC’s executive programs are considered hybrid, combining the flexibility of online learning with the benefits of in-person interaction. The majority of coursework is completed online at the student's own pace, with weekly assignments. Each term includes a mandatory three-day weekend residency on the campus in Henniker, New Hampshire. These residencies provide an immersive experience where students collaborate with peers, sharpen their global vision, and develop an international professional network. An executive master’s program at NEC offers immersive learning for current professionals and high-potential leaders who strive to become successful in their field.

Residency Experience

In-person attendance on campus in New Hampshire is mandatory for the weekend residency sessions. During these sessions, students engage in classes, projects, and student presentations. This is an excellent opportunity to network with classmates and colleagues from all over the world and within the US. Residencies are held one weekend per 15-week term. New England College does not provide housing during the Residency weekend. However, New England College is conveniently located in Henniker, New Hampshire, only 20 minutes from the state capital of Concord, 40 minutes from the largest city of Manchester, and 60 minutes from Nashua. New England College is 90 minutes from Boston, Massachusetts.

While New England College does not provide housing during the residency weekend, there are a few local hotels near the campus that are recommended. Students are responsible for arranging transportation for residency weekends.

Residency Schedule and Logistics

Light breakfast items and coffee are available during check-in on Friday morning. Lunch is provided on Friday and Saturday in Gilmore Dining Hall, which always has Halal and vegetarian options as well as a variety of healthy choices. Students are responsible for their own dinner. Classes begin at 10:00 a.m. on Friday, with designated breaks. Students should plan accordingly and allow enough time to park and find their classroom. Attendance at each Executive Residency class session is mandatory. Any absence requests must be reviewed and approved by the Program Director in advance of a Residency session. There is only one other Residency in the term that could be attended as the alternative Residency. Failure to attend the alternative residency will result in immediate dismissal from the Executive program.

Students are required to be in class for the entire 19 hours per weekend. Employers should be notified in advance that students are in class during the Residency weekend. The campus could close due to severe weather. Students are encouraged to sign up for campus alerts so they are notified of campus delays or closures in advance.

If a student has a condition that may interfere with their ability to access the programs or services of New England College while they’re here for their Residency, they should reach out to the Office of Disability Services to discuss potential reasonable accommodations. The Office of Disability Services is a small office working with students across all of NEC’s programs. Students are encouraged to begin working with the Office of Disability Services as soon as possible, preferably no later than two weeks prior to their arrival date or as soon as the need is realized. Students can schedule an intake meeting with ODS staff to discuss their specific situation, barriers to access, etc.

Program Structure and Curriculum

Each term is 15 weeks long, and executive programs operate year-round with three terms each year: Spring, Summer, and Fall. Each term you will take 2 classes each worth 3 credits, and 1 internship course worth 1 credit for the required internship/job. The program is prescribed, and students do not select their own courses. This means that, in most circumstances, programs cannot be shortened or extended. In some cases, shortening a program may be possible. Program accelerations are not guaranteed and are only offered in exceptional circumstances.

Internship Requirement

An internship for one credit is a required component of this program, regardless of your citizenship status or visa status. The internship course is an integral part of the Executive program curriculum. Internships or jobs must directly relate to the program learning outcomes. Students are required to have a job or internship secured prior to enrolling in an Executive program at NEC. Students who fail to submit their Employment Agreement Form by the deadline will be asked to leave the program.

Eligible F-1 students will complete their required internship or job through CPT (Curricular Practical Training) authorization. The first step in CPT authorization is completing the EAF (Employment Agreement Form) and sending it for academic approval. Once the Transfer Release Date arrives, students submit the approved EAF to their NEC DSO to receive their CPT-authorized I-20.

CPT is authorized by term. Once students start the program, gaps between terms will be covered by their CPT extension process, which the NEC DSO will assist with. There should be no gap once students start the program if they do the CPT extension process before the end of every term. After first approval of the EAF and required CPT authorization, term-by-term CPT authorization may be renewed prior to the end of the term so there are no gaps in employment between terms. Typically, students are not eligible for OPT after an Executive Master’s program.

If a student loses their job while enrolled, they must let their program director and DSO know. A period of reported unemployment during a term is permissible for no more than 90-days in the aggregate, counted in calendar days for the program. Students may remain in the internship course but must complete the alternative assignments established by their program.

A virtual orientation session to cover immigration issues, academics, login processes, and billing and payments and to provide an opportunity to meet the faculty and staff of NEC will take place a week before the term starts.

International Student Information

International students have access to Curricular Practical Training for eligible internships/work placements.

Our SEVIS record transfer-in deadline is the Wednesday before the term start by 4:30PM. Any work authorization you currently have ends with a SEVIS transfer. We can only accept SEVIS records in Active status. You can schedule a SEVIS record transfer in advance. Every school has its own Transfer Out process. Some schools may take up to two weeks. Students have 60-day grace period after OPT/STEM OPT to take action on their SEVIS record.

Once your Transfer Release Date arrives, you will submit the approved EAF to your NEC DSO to receive your CPT-authorized I-20. CPT is authorized by term. Once you start your program, gaps between terms will be covered by your CPT extension process which your NEC DSO will assist with. There should be no gap once you start your program if you do the CPT extension process before the end of every term. Typically, students are not eligible for OPT after an Executive Master’s program.

F-1 students may travel during breaks, or for short term emergencies, or between terms, even if you are authorized for CPT, if the Travel Signature on page two is valid and you have a valid F-1 Visa. Students may not travel and continue studies from outside the US, however. You must be inside the US to study and remain in status. Please keep in mind, you may remain in the US with an expired F-1 visa but if you leave the US, you may not return with an expired F-1 visa. You may take a term off after a full year of studies at NEC (3 terms) if you want to remain in F-1 status and remain in the US. If you are willing to leave the US and temporarily lose F-1 status, you may take a term of Authorized Early Withdrawal (AEW) at any time. You will have 15 days to leave the US once AEW is authorized by your DSO.

She has over 15 years as an adjunct professor and completed her doctoral studies to expand her knowledge of the educational environment. Joan feels very fortunate to have been involved in the evolution of IT. She started with paper tape and punch cards and is now working on artificial intelligence, with so many great experiences on the way.
Rick Mitchell has many years of experience working in information technology, as a systems designer, project manager, and educator. For many years, he was the president of Programmers Studio, a consulting firm that provided programming and analysis services throughout New England.
