Navigating New Student Registration at UIUC: A Comprehensive Guide

Embarking on your academic journey at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (UIUC) is an exciting milestone. New Student Registration (NSR) serves as a crucial first step, designed to equip you with the knowledge and resources needed for a successful transition. Whether you participate on-campus or virtually, this guide will help you navigate the NSR process with confidence.

Preparing for New Student Registration

Prior to your NSR date, several important tasks need completion. These steps ensure a smooth and productive advising experience.

Essential Pre-NSR Tasks

  1. NetID Setup: Activate your NetID through the Admitted Student Checklist under "NetID and Computing." Remember your password, as it's essential for accessing university resources.

  2. Placement Exams: Exploratory Studies students must complete the Math and Chemistry placement exams, regardless of their intended major. Additional exams may be required based on your academic interests. These exams are advising tools, not pass/fail tests, designed to assist in course placement.

  3. Pre-Advising Worksheet: Complete the New Student Registration Pre-Advising Worksheet, indicating your majors of interest, AP exams taken, and any previous college credit earned. It's perfectly acceptable to change your mind or omit information initially.

  4. General Education Worksheet: Use the General Education Worksheet to explore popular course options for first-year students.

  5. Zoom Download: If attending virtually, download the Zoom Client for Meetings and practice screen sharing beforehand. Ensure you have computer access for your advising appointment.

Understanding the Purpose of Placement Exams

Placement exams are designed to evaluate your existing knowledge and skills in specific subjects, like math and chemistry. The results are used to advise you on the most appropriate courses to begin with, ensuring you're neither overwhelmed nor under-challenged. Don't worry about "failing" - these exams are simply tools to help your advisor guide you.

Video Resources

Prior to your NSR day, watch the provided videos. These videos feature insights from Director Sarah Watson, explaining advising within Exploratory Studies and how the university supports students. You'll also learn about the procedures and requirements for declaring majors at Illinois.

The New Student Registration Experience

NSR involves a structured agenda designed to provide you with essential information and guidance. Your specific agenda will vary depending on whether you attend in person or online, as well as your academic college.

Signing Up and Rescheduling

Registration for NSR typically opens in mid-March. Complete all required placement tests and your pre-advising worksheet at least two weeks before your scheduled date to avoid potential cancellation.

While rescheduling is possible through the New Student Registration section of your myIllini Admitted Student Checklist, remember that once you relinquish your original spot, it becomes available to other students. Holding multiple reservations is not permitted. There are enough program dates and capacity to accommodate all new first-year and transfer students in all majors

A Sample NSR Day (On-Campus)

  1. Check-in: Arrive at Lot E14 (parking designated for NSR) off Kirby Avenue. Admissions staff will direct you to buses transporting you to the Illini Union for check-in. At Illini Union ABC, students and guests receive agendas and reference materials.

  2. Welcome Session: The Office of Undergraduate Admissions provides a welcome and an overview of the New Student Registration process at Illini Union ABC & Ballroom.

  3. College Meetings: Students and guests are escorted to college meetings at various campus locations for college-specific information.

  4. Lunch: Students eat lunch at Illinois Street Residence Hall (ISR), while parents and guests dine at the Illini Union.

Academic Advising

At NSR, you'll meet with an advisor who will either be your assigned advisor or provide information on how to contact your advisor in the future. Advisors are prepared to assist students who have signed up for each day. You can leverage your pre-advising worksheet and discuss potential AP or IB credit with your advisor to predict your course placements.

Addressing Course Availability Concerns

While current students register before new students, and popular courses might initially appear full, departments typically reserve seats for new students. These seats are released throughout the summer, ensuring course availability regardless of your registration day.

General Education Course Exploration

Understanding General Education requirements is crucial for a well-rounded education.

General Education Course Assignment

Familiarize yourself with the different General Education courses available.

  1. Explore Categories: Look up classes in the Cultural Studies, Humanities & the Arts, and Social & Behavioral Science categories.

  2. Course Details: For courses available in the fall (indicated by a blue circle with a check), click the title to learn about its content, Gen Ed categories it satisfies, and meeting times.

  3. Favorite Courses: If a course interests you, click the STAR to add it to your favorites.

  4. Select Multiple Options: Choose 4-5 courses to have alternatives in case some become full or conflict with your schedule.

  5. Category Variety: Feel free to pick classes from different General Education categories but avoid Natural Sciences & Technology, Quantitative Reasoning, or Advanced Composition at this stage.

Planning Your Fall Schedule

Gaining a sense of your potential schedule for the fall semester is a valuable exercise.

  1. Draft Course List: Create a draft list of courses you may want to take in your first semester, using the provided chart as a guide. Prioritize courses in the recommended order (left-to-right).

    • Calculus II (MATH 231) sections may be specific to different majors.
    • Composition I timing depends on your University ID Number (UIN): even numbers take it in the fall, odd numbers in spring 2023.
  2. Utilize Enhanced Registration: Open both the Class Schedule and the Plan Ahead feature in Enhanced Registration. Create a plan for fall 2022 based on your draft, checking the Class Schedule for course restrictions.

  3. (Optional) Favorite Gen Ed Courses: Complete option 1 above and favorite 4-5 General Education courses in Course Explorer.

Parent and Guest Information

Parents and guests are encouraged to attend NSR, as they receive valuable information about the transition to college. The program addresses questions and provides an understanding of available resources.

Parent/Guest Program Highlights

During the on-campus program, parents attend most sessions separately from their student, except for the opening session and college meeting. Parents hear from New Student and Family Experiences, Housing, and other relevant offices.
