Unlocking Opportunities: A Guide to NIU Merit Scholarships and Financial Aid
Northern Illinois University (NIU) is committed to making education accessible and affordable for students. One of the key ways NIU achieves this is through a variety of scholarships, including merit-based awards. These scholarships recognize academic achievement and provide financial assistance to help students pursue their educational goals. This article explores the various merit scholarship opportunities available at NIU, along with other forms of financial aid and the requirements for eligibility.
Merit Scholarships for Incoming Freshmen and Transfer Students
NIU automatically considers incoming freshmen and transfer students for merit scholarships when they apply for admission. These scholarships are awarded based on high school GPA or transfer GPA, respectively. While GPA requirements and award amounts vary, applicants should generally have at least a 3.0 GPA to be considered.
The deadline for freshmen applicants is December 1, while the deadline for transfer students is March 1 (or October 1 for those applying for the spring semester). To maintain the scholarship, recipients must maintain a 2.75 GPA for renewal.
Specific Merit Scholarship Programs
NIU Alumni Association Merit Scholarship
The NIU Alumni Association offers $2,500 merit scholarships to continuing undergraduate students who will be sophomores, juniors, or seniors in the upcoming school year. To be eligible, students must be enrolled full-time at NIU for both the fall and spring semesters ($1,250 each semester). The deadline for the Alumni Merit Scholarship for the 2024-2025 academic year was in January. The NIU Alumni Association has provided financial assistance to thousands of students for more than 50 years.
Merit Scholarship for Family-Sponsored International Students
NIU offers merit scholarships specifically for students who are fully family-sponsored and hold visa classifications that typically require out-of-state tuition and fees. To be eligible for this scholarship, students must have a minimum cumulative grade point average of 3.5/4.0, as computed by NIU standards. The amount of each award varies from $5,000 to $9,000 per academic year, or is $5,000 per academic year.

Housing Scholarships
In addition to merit scholarships, NIU also offers housing scholarships to help students with on-campus room costs. To qualify for a housing scholarship, students must have a minimum cumulative grade point average of 2.75/4.0, as computed by NIU standards. Students receiving this award must live in Neptune Hall during their first academic year. Each award is valued at $2,000 per year towards on-campus room costs and does not cover the cost of a meal plan. Notably, the housing scholarship may be taxable.
Scholarships for City Colleges of Chicago Star Scholars
NIU has a scholarship program designed for eligible City Colleges of Chicago students who are Star Scholars, enabling them to transition their associate degree into a bachelor's degree at NIU. To qualify, students must be Star Scholars and have completed an Associate in Arts or Science degree at City Colleges with a 3.0 GPA or higher, and maintain that GPA while at NIU. NIU will consider these students for a variety of scholarships, including merit scholarships, and they may also be eligible for additional state and federal financial aid programs.
