Navigating Student Life at NJIT: A Guide to the Dean of Students Office

The Dean of Students (DOS) Office at the New Jersey Institute of Technology (NJIT) serves as a central hub for student support, addressing a wide range of concerns and providing guidance on university policies and procedures. This article provides a comprehensive overview of how the DOS Office can assist students in various situations, ensuring a smooth and successful academic journey.

Understanding the Role of the Dean of Students Office

The Office of the DOS is dedicated to supporting students' well-being and academic success. It acts as a resource for navigating complex issues, understanding university policies, and connecting with appropriate campus resources. Whether a student is facing academic challenges, personal difficulties, or needs assistance with university procedures, the DOS Office is available to help. The Office can help you navigate through the proper procedures.

Addressing Academic Concerns

Religious Observances and Class Absences

NJIT recognizes the importance of religious observances and strives to accommodate students' needs. If you have to miss class because of a religious observance, it is your responsibility to discuss with your professors prior to the religious observance about missing class for that purpose. Make it a priority at the beginning of each semester to discuss this request with your professors so that they are aware that it may interfere with your class attendance and can make the necessary arrangements accordingly. Students must provide the Office of the DOS with official and verifiable documentation related to the absences within 14 days and complete the Student Absence Excuse Request Form. Once the absence has been verified, the Office of the DOS will communicate on your behalf to your professor(s). Please note that our office only verifies documentation and it is at the discretion of your professor(s) to provide any accommodation.

Academic Integrity and Misconduct

The NJIT University and community strives to develop and maintain a high level of ethics and honesty among all members of its community. It is our hope that each student demonstrate honesty and integrity in the completion of all assignments and in the participation of the learning process. Adherence to the University policy on Academic Integrity promotes the level of integrity required within the university and professional communities and assures students that their work is being judged fairly with the work of others. Issues of academic integrity/misconduct (cheating, plagiarism, unauthorized collaboration, falsification, etc) are handled through our office. If you have been accused of cheating on a paper by one of your professors, It is important that you follow-up with this request by logging into Maxient with your UCID to access the letter. Ignoring the situation will not make it go away. This form is used to report any alleged academic violations of the honor code.
